That is true! And shame on me for forgetting. Well, take out the Young Ones and replace it with Blackadder. That's really all you need to disprove ITV's new policy.

I've defended Robinson a few times on here as essentially I think at times he's the only one who speaks up about very important issues that most politicians just won't touch with a ten foot pole but even I have to admit that the man does himself no favours at times.

I always misread her name as 'Granule Sprinkles'. I only knew her through her writing, but it sounds like she was beloved by those who knew her personally. She also was a bona fide, hardworking, down-to-earth social justice activist, as opposed to the pretentiously 'woke', posturing, keyboard warriors.

In sort, all of them! Your link has allocation for one year 2019 - hurrah! what about the gradual decrease over the last decade? National Audi Office report (linked below)
"Figure 3
Funding reductions by police force, 2010-11 to 2018-19"

and there is no indication how the Police Funding Formula changes will affect allocation in future years.
The Police Funding Formula divides up how much money each police force receives from the overall central government funds. It takes into account a number of factors to assess demand in each area.
Earlier this year, the Home Office and police partners engaged on potential changes to the police funding formula. However, in the context of changing demand, the Minister for Policing and the Fire Service Nick Hurd has said that providing funding certainty over the next two years to enable the police to plan in an efficient way is his priority.
Therefore, proposed changes to the funding formula will be revisited at the next Spending Review."
Funding to police forces - which comes from central government and council tax - fell by 19% in real terms between 2010-11 and 2018-19, according to the National Audit Office.

Officer numbers have fallen by around 20,000 since 2010.

What do you suggest that Khan does , other than spend the money he or the Police has been given (and not on useless water cannons or garden bridges like his predecessor) that will make any real difference to the stats?

i'm no fan of Khan - he's useless on most fronts but I think the fact that funding for police (from Central Govt and Local authorities) has fallen by 20% and police numbers by 20,000 might have something to do with it and stop and search drop has coincided with the increase - and you need coppers in numbers t do that.

I had a dream last night that Nigel Farage was standing at a lecturn beside the god emperor in the White house garden, after the Donald welcomed the "New PM of Great Britain" Farage waffled on about the great links between the two countries blah blah and then said a trade deal would mean we could sell the Yanks our great British cuisine like Fish & chips, Spotted Dick and Bangers & Mash. Then Piers Morgan came along with a slide show to explain just what Bangers & Mash was whilst Oprah WInfrey (who looked nothing like Oprah Winfrey btw) suddenly turned up as the real president instead of the Donald and promptly had Piers Morgan arrested and Nigel Farage was told to take his British cuisine and return to merry 'ol England.

I did eat some cheese on toast for supper but I still think I might be going a bit mad. :?

Very strong cast, almost every face you see is well-known, the production value looks through the roof (it's HBO) and the whole thing is a gritty warts-and-all account of the circumstances surrounding the Chernobyl disaster. Seriously folks, if you enjoy grim TV, you'll eat this up...

Best thing on TV for a long, long time.
Definitely going to watch it anyway, but here's an overlong Thuderfoot video on how the nuclear science in the movie is about on the level of Twin Peaks: The Return.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsdLDFtbdrA&t=1614s
Finally watched it, and it is as good as advertised. I think Thunderfoot's criticism of the series is mostly wrongheaded, in that the secondary explosion scenarios were not presented as fact, but as something Soviet nuclear scientists were telling the Central Committee. Granted, these scientists were presented as competent and truth seeking, but also as not being certain as to what the worst case scenario was, as this was an entirely unprecedented situation. They also had to spur a corrupt, deeply sclerotic bureaucracy which was in full CYA mode into action. The series leaves it as an open question as to whether they were being knowingly alarmist to accomplish this, but it's certainly consistent with the overarching themes.

Back in the '80s, when being anti-nuclear power was the default left-wing position, the narrative of how close the Chernobyl disaster was to a full scale planetary emergency was useful, and hence had staying power. Heck, even the earlier 3-Mile Island disaster, which was orders of magnitude less serious, was sometimes presented as a near extinction level event. Thunderfoot's video is a good debunking of this narrative, which still exists, even if it fails as criticism of the series.
