Shameless Self Promotion

What is the feeling of slymepit members regarding the use of this forum for self promotion? I saw some recent posts regarding Vacula using the pit for this purpose that were negative. I wanted to get more opinions on this subject.

I really couldn't give a shit if you use it for self-promotion so long as you've also got something else to say. If you're only using for it self-promotion, and the focus of all your posts is you, the video/blog you've just made and you again, it does tend to get more than slightly fucking annoying.

That was why I initially posted my query regarding Vacula. At one point,, it looked like the only posts he ever did here were self-promotion. That is still the case to some degree; it seems to me that about 90 to 95% of his posts are nothing more than "look at me; look at me".

I find it tiresome and irritating.

To my glee, I've discovered several A/S blogs & videos by following links found here.

I belong to a loose confederation of intermittent bloggers who cross-post, guest post, and share links to give heads-up to our loose confederation of common, intermittent readers.

Everything in moderation (the old kind, not the interwebs kind.) Ideally, the self-pimping would occur in a relevant discussion, or at least by opening a new topic. Dumping a non sequitur plug at the end of every comment stream on the BBS would be a bit ... pushy.

I don't mind self promotion as long as it isn't the only thing a person is doing here. JV self promotes a bit, but he also engages in discussion. I think I might like it if JV toned down the self promotion a little, but I see that as an issue of style, like an aversion to apostrophes, or wearing fashionable hats. I agree with Matt C in that I have also discovered interesting A/S blogs, videos, etc. by following links from the SP, some of which were posted by people self-promoting.

I also don't mind and actually would rather like to see a dedicated thread about e.g. Submariner's videos. It's not exactly stealing bytes and as long as someone is a "regular" I don't see an issue. I think it gets a problem when unknown people only dump their stuff.

Actually, I have no problem with Justin doing what he does. He is in the business of advocating for a cause, and that's what he does.

Also, he is a great straight guy for having the piss taken over his moustache. Those porn-stache jokes just never get old.

That's pretty much my view. Regulars who self-promote on any topic we've covered here don't bother me at all. I've enjoyed the podcasters and YouTubers in particular. Bloggers are ok, too. ;)

Ultimately, if it's annoying you, then you're the one with the problem, skip it, it's that simple, see a name, see nothing in a post other than a link, keep on scrolling.

I have no issue with it. In my opinion anyone who is trying to get the message out there deserves support and encouragement. It is also a good source for the many lurkers we have who may be interested in what is going on.

I really do not understand the issues with JV so I have had to put it down to some historical issues I am unaware of. I appreciate the reasons behind some of the annoyance he can generate but the reactions do seem to be over the top on occasion, at least to me. I for one will always support someone willing to stick their neck out and put real effort into their activism.
