On a totally unrelated note, what used to be my favourite webcomic, Sinfest, has now jumped the shark. For some reason, Tatsuya Ishida got totally enamored with feminist concepts like "The Patriarchy" and decided he would implement into the comic, which turned every character into a bland black and white caricature of their former selves. He also introduced various Mary Sue entities, conveniently called "The Sisterhood" and now that's all he does anymore. Everything is about "The Patriarchy", everything is a tool of "The Patriarchy", he even made a Matrix parody where "The Patriarchy" is the Matrix and "The Sisterhood" is designed to set others free. It's total bullshit, from beginning to end. The forum, too, has become riddled with a fainting couch brigade that wouldn't be out of place in the A+ forum.

I used to be a regular there, read it every day. I haven't checked it for several weeks now. I tuned in a couple of days ago and this is what I see,

Alternatively, what we SHOULD be thinking about, at least the progressives among us, is what we think the baseline should be. What do we think the minimum should be. I mean, at least for me, things such as access to education and maintaining an economy where jobs supply/demand roughly match and that a reasonable work-week would result in a person being self-sustainable are examples of things that I personally think we should set as goals for where the baseline is in our society. It doesn't matter TOO much how much people are above this point, for the most part. What's important is how to adopt policies which ensure that the most people as possible are at at least those baseline levels.

So I think one of the major disservices that the various Social Justice movements have made on our culture, is that we focus on equality/fairness, and not about the nuts and bolts about what the minimum standards for our society should be, and more importantly, how to reach those standards.

The funny thing about hair color preference, is that at least in the circles I run in, I know of very few people who prefer blondes. It's mostly a preference towards black/red hair.

And I have to say, having Anne of Green Gables NOT with red hair is kinda wrong. Sorry, but that's how I feel about that. I think this is a modern retelling of the story? Which probably justifies entirely the new look, but still. It feels weird.

I think the place/country/city where you live plays some role on hair color preference. In South America there seems to be a preference for blondes with light-colored eyes, probably because the majority of people have dark hair and eyes.
Maybe if you live in a place where blond hair is common, people will be attracted to the less common black hair?

[My area] Atheists board meeting today. Announcement was made about a skeptics meeting being held in the region (in another city) in a few months; one of the Board members commented that this conference "doesn't even have a harassment policy" and that she would never attend a conference that doesn't have a harassment policy; another (female) Board member agreed.

I didn't see any point to commenting, since they were airing personal views, not discussing Board business. Instead I spent the moment propping up my jaw so it didn't visibly head toward the floor. It's hard for me to understand their mindset. It seems like Ophelia-level paranoia.

Either that, or I was remiss in attending, in the past week, 2 conferences for work which had no harassment policies - and presumably was misguided in feeling safe while there. :roll:

Zest for life nothing. I would like for Tat to give back her fun personality, though, because right now she has no personality. None. It's like if you were to take, say, Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop and remove her greed and her sensuality simply because in some unevidenced crackpot theory it's demeaning to women. Fuck that! That's what made her character! But the thing is, she developed over time, and likewise with Monique (or 'Nique) - or so I thought. "The Sisterhood" arc truly fucked the comic over. That Matrix parody is proof of it. I realise fighting over the personality of a comic character might seem the epitomy of a first world problem, and it most likely is, but it's just not a fun read anymore. I don't post in the forum anymore, either. Ever since that arc began, it was overtaken by radfems long ago. One of them even praised and tried to make excuses for Andrea Dworkin. Lost cause.

Ophelia was speaking about Anne of Green Gables, which appears to be a book that is going to me made into a film. And she's talking about particular characters and their intended roles by the writers. In this situation, I don't see much to criticize Ophelia on, unless I've read the books.

I do the same thing when reading A Song Of Ice And Fire. Characters are written showing and representing different characteristics from a medieval setting. Also, I get upset when a character, which is written with certain features, is then portrayed differently in a film. It's the reason why I was upset at some parts of Game Of Thrones season 2.
