Well there's heckling and there is abuse.
You wouldn't expect a black comedian to have to put up with a group of men calling him "nigger" through his set, and I think the fact that the headliner comedian was apparently furious that the club's management had not acted indicates that it was not a simple case of her failing to deal with normal heckling.

Point taken. However, in this instance, I wouldn't go so far as to call it abuse (which does happen at comedy gigs, at his article illustrates: http://www.ihollaback.org/blog/2011/05/ ... comedians/) - but it was dickish, and certainly the kind of thing that any prospective comedian needs to get a handle on.

This is not to say I'm a fan of heckling - just in case I gave that impression. In the context of the profession, however, it's just one of those things you have to accept that you are going to have to deal with. Having done shop work in the past, I can attest that however much I disliked having to deal with customers who hadn't brushed their teeth, taken a bath, who were rude and stupid; who felt that store clerks were there to agree with their obnoxious views on politics, immigrants and foreigners; who felt like they were about to puke and thought the best thing to do was go shopping (same with having an attack of the shits - oh, that was nasty); however disagreeable these things were and however much I wished it could be otherwise, I just had to accept that my vision of a utopian shop-work experience amounted to the square root of sweet FA, and just knuckle down and get on with it.

Someone in Ophelias thread throws a little more light on the situation with some more information from the comedienne herself:

“Under normal circumstances, I would shoot them a sassy line, and tell them to shut up. But this club sends us all memos, telling us NOT to talk to the crowd, or engage the staff in our acts.”

In which case she is barred from taking on hecklers.
In that situation I think it's reasonable for her to be upset if the club didn't take action.

As Strawkins points out, the casino at which the harassed comedienne was performing had an unusual policy about hecklers. She also describes herself as an unusually passive/accommodating person:

The first show of the week was on a Thursday night. We get there and have to sign in through security. For the night, we are employees of the casino. There are many rules. Many comedians whom I respect, have broken these rules and been banned.

We (the comedians) get memos from this particular club telling us “the use of profanity, name calling or abrasive comebacks towards hecklers should be strongly avoided. If you feel hecklers are not being handled in a proper manner during your show, please voice this to the management.” This whole memo seemed like a joke to me. I never get in fights with crowd members. I try to appease everyone, even when I shouldn’t. I do the same as a civilian. I always tip 20 percent, even if I get crappy service. I don’t bug my landlord unless the toilet DEFINITELY won’t flush. Yesterday I sat at a table in a restaurant that had ants crawling all over it. I didn’t move tables, or tell my server. I just tried to help out and killed them with the pepper shaker.

So when I got the memo, I laughed. I even wrote back to my agent, “Oh yeah! You know me! Old 'Starts Fights With the Crowd' Walkinshaw! Bahahahahahaha!" (I don’t use “LOL!” I prefer the “Bahahahahahaha!”) But of course, like every sixth paragraph of a short story, something happens.

She later makes this comment:

I’ve been lucky enough to make (half) a living off my dream. I’ve had my own half hour comedy special, and toured as a comic for over 10 years. Oh, but I’m Canadian. So you’ve never heard of me.

It's getting beyond sad.

If it's truly dementia and/or mental illness, then yes, it is sad. However, her FtB colleagues and her fans aren't doing her any favors in that case - they just make it worse and encourage her sense of paranoia and victimization. The people who interact with her at meetings should have a better sense of her mental status than can be garnered by online impressions from her blog posts (which are also entirely consistent with deliberate up-whipping of drama).

I think that a lot of her reaction is down to prudery. I can well understand how someone of Ophelia's age and character can genuinely see photoshops of her worshipping vaginas as faintworthy. It may partly be a generational thing. What we see as irreverent and insulting, she has a visceral reaction to. She might genuinely see it as the kind of thing only real lowlifes do.

None of that would explain her complete lack of self-awareness and self-righteousness. To be consistent she would immediately comply with Katie Graham's request because she has no way of knowing whether Katie is actually facing a real threat, and even tweeting too often is harassment.She definitely has some serious character flaws as well. Mentally ill? Wouldn't like to guess.
