Yeah... I was just watching Elizabeth Warren stumble to explain why she claimed to be 'Native American' on official forms.
Instead of answering uncomfortable questions, she kept repeating "only tribes determine tribal citizenship".
Her obvious obfuscation-- is that her one-size-fits-all reply-- didn't answer the tough questions reporters asked. Dances Around Questions.
But, here's another layer of obfuscation: she didn't write "Cherokee" on the official forms. She wrote 'Native American'.
If her genetic test hadn't been so monochrome lily-white... she coulda been 2% Cherokee, 2% Inuit, 2% Kick-a-poo, 2% Mohawk, 2% Okie Dokey Fenokey Muskogee... and so on... not-enough of any one tribe to be a tribal citizen/ but legit "Native American" enough to shut-up critics.
It's kinda weird that she's so-eager to defer to the tribal bureaucrats' authority. There's a lot of political hackery in how tribes decide who gets a piece of the cigarette profits or uranium mining. She thinks she's on the side of The Little Guy... but even on the Reservation, she's instinctively 'inside the beltway'.
The reason I'm making note of this, is... I'm damn-close to Elizabeth Warren, in terms of dubious claim to Native American ancestry.
Like Warren's claim: one of my grandmothers was from a specific native tribe. And a great-grandmother was from another. Both on my father's side.
Like Warren, Dad took one of those genetic tests. So the results included a certain percentage 'Native American'. Less than the 50% or 25% some tribes require, for membership... more than the 12.5% or 6.25% other tribes require. But maybe-not enough of any-one tribe? He visited one of the tribes a couple years ago, and was well-recieved... as long as he didn't try to claim a cut of casino-profits or mineral-rights, or whatever.
Like Warren, I don't think Dad ever obtained a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood card from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
When I was a kid-- I recall my mom telling me I 'should' claim minority status on college or hiring applications, [like Warren did].
By blood, I'd have more claim to 'hispanic' than 'indian'. Unlike Warren, I always felt qualms about whether I'm nonwhite-enough to 'really' qualify.
So... I'm the half-half-half-half-breed she pretended to be. And she's STILL answering questions in a misleading way... her answers Would apply to me... but not her. Fuckin' creepy.

Per the Bureau of Indian Affairs:
The rights, protections, and services provided by the United States to individual American Indians and Alaska Natives flow not from a person's identity as such in an ethnological sense, but because he or she is a member of a federally recognized tribe.
Regardless of her cockamamie family lore, Lizzie as a lawyer would have known perfectly well she was not entitles to claim that status.

I think I make the most noise when I'm experiencing cognitive dissonance & my opinion is in freefall.
Even tho-- the noise I make might sound like it's strident/partisan/close-minded--
the things I'm truly opinionated-about... I find to be boring to dwell on... you probably don't hear me chew on those topics.
In the case of Immigration, I think I'm one of the American Workers whose labor value is undercut by cheap foreign imports...
but I don't dislike immigrants more than white Minnesotans. And... I have such respect for Libertarian philosophy, that I feel I have to keep giving consideration to the Reason magazine podcast's relentless pro-open-borders stance. I remind myself to think bigger than this political moment... to some future situation, where federal power over borders or whatever... is used against me.
In particular, regarding 21 Savage, -- 21 Savage was hanging-out with another rapper, the night before ICE arrested him.
I know the other rapper... he's from the block I live on. My girlfriend watched him grow up. He was a smiling, goofy entertainer-kid...
eager to do a breakdancing headspin at the slightest encouragement. He went on TV talent shows... did a rap song about riding his moped...
and now he's grown-up & associated with Kanye West & a short-ass father with an even-shorter cute wife & peanut of a baby.
He's upset at seeing his friend, 21, picked up for (as my friend sees it) 21's parents failing to handle his immigration papers correctly, in 2005.
As a parent, my friend is worried about 21's kids losing their father.
My girlfriend's family was chased out of China by Mao's communist insurgency. They eventually arrived in Japan, with low status as chink refugees. Her family got involved in yakuza-type crime & prospered. They barely got out of that arrangement-- all their associates dead or in prison, or at least ruined from Japan's economic troubles. They scooted to the US, obtained citizenship-- but I wouldn't be surprised if that included bribes or such, to expedite & assure entry. Who knows.
So... there's a lot about these news stories-- which raised more questions for me, than answers. That's one reason I find smug progressives like Ocasio-Cortez so disconcerting... she's so fucking sure she knows everything/ and it's all so simple & clear.

I just watched THE SNOWMAN, based on the novel featuring Norlander detective, Harry A. Hole. Unlike most fictional detectives, Hole is a rogue cop who constantly breaks the rules yet is tolerated by his boss, and is a raging alcoholic who's screwed up his marriage yet still tries to connect with his kid and deal with his ex who also tolerates him and occasionally pity-fucks him. Oddly, for a fictional detective, he doesn't like jazz.
Anyhoo, DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM. The mystery sucks, the plot twists are outrageous, and none of the actors are Norlanders. Hole is played by Krauto-American Michael Fassbinder, most famous for playing a robot, his ex is played by Frog Charlotte Gainsburg, famous for being somebody's daughter and for-real fucking on screen. The rich & powerful Norlander businessman who might be the killer (he's not) is played by Baldie-American Will Pope, famous for playing Chief of Police Will Pope on The Closer. There are assorted Frogs & Krauts & Limeys, and even a Limey with a Frog last name, and a severely bloated Val Kilmer, whose lines all had to be dubbed into English from slurred English, playing another rule-breaking alcoholic Norlander detective, Rafto Raftossen. But no Norlander actors (who were probably all busy working on Game of Thrones.)
There is a lot of snow, and it looks fucking cold all the time, even inside. (This may have something to do with the Norlanders having constructed all their office buildings with glass walls, despite Norland's location in the Arctic Circle.) As I mentioned, the mystery sucks, and Hole doesn't do much detecting, just a lot of boozing and banging his ex and not connecting very well with his kid. Also unlike most detective stories, Hole doesn't actually solve the mystery, he is instead lured to a secluded location by the killer where he has to fist-fight the killer to save his ex and his kid. Who's actually not his kid, btw, cuz Charlotte Gainsburg is a slag.

Aren't NATO members required to come to the defense of a member country? Maybe the other member states can draw straws to see who gets to attack France and who gets to attack Italy.

I didn't think of writing about this last week when it happened but might be of interest soo...
I went for my usual walk on the beach. There was a dude throwing sticks for his golden retriever. There was a family of otters tooling around right near the water's edge a few hundred yards down the beach and scattered groups of ducks and gulls and a pair of California Sea Lions a few hundred yards straight out.
The dog had nearly gotten back to the shoreline in wading depth when a sea lion suddenly swirled less than 10 feet behind the dog. It was totally unexpected as the sea lion swam in submerged the whole distance. I suspect the dog was lucky it was in shallow enough water and close enough to its owner that he didn't get bitten and or dragged around. Fucking sea lions are obnoxious at best but they seem to get even worse this time of year as I guess they are breeding pretty soon.

Lord help you man. Wildlife gets used to people as long as people never act as a threat. I live in a very populated suburb, but the coyotes are often killing my neighbor's dogs. The deer walk down the middle of the street and hardly move for cars.
The sea lions are protected and they are fuckers. Give it a few years and they will be a threat to safety.
