Iran has been looking to run Iraq for some time, probably since 1980 and have been steadily making gains since the 2003 American invasion. During the last few years they have been as or more influential in Iraq than the US and the recent Hizbollah attacks coupled with pressure on the Iraqi government have been designed to get The US to get out of Iraq so they can basically take over. The killing of Soleimani will cause Iran to step up Iranian sponsored attacks on US interests but likely make the US much less popular with Iraqi politicians, especially the shites.
Trump's signalling intent to pull out of the region gives Iraq incentive to ask the US to leave and allow Iran even more power.
Iran deserved a spanking no doubt, but I'm not sure rubbing out Soliemani was that well thought out.

Fang got sunken-eyed & gaunt with AIDS, too... he was doing physical labor as a bar back & he thought the pneumonia was just side-effects of quitting smoking. Maybe 20 pounds in a month & a half. But he gained weight, once hospitalized for a few weeks.
When Abbie cures AIDS we can open a spa & give it to people to lose weight, then she can sell 'em the cure.
It's weird not being able to see the sky for weeks and everything looking orange. The smell takes a lot of getting used to as well. Never seen anything like this, not even the 2003 Canberra bushfires. The day before those, my mum and I were canoeing on the lake. The sky was a beautiful blue, and then this thick plume of black smoke suddenly appeared on the horizon and eventually blocked out the sky. The next day, the fire was within visual distance of where I was living, but never seriously threatened the house. And a few days later, it was all clear again.
This is something else. I haven't really seen the sky since November. Maybe 4 or 5 days in that time have had blue skies. There's also a constant smell of burnt wood - you can't have doors or windows open. It's weirdly beautiful when you're driving at night, and the artificial lights stick out of the haze like a Van Gogh painting. During the day, it's disconcerting. Visibility right now is only a few hundred metres with the sun out, although I can't see the sun, and everything has an orange glow. It hasn't been unpleasantly hot. I think previous years have felt worse, even if this season has broken records. I haven't even felt the need to change out my doona yet, and I usually need to over the summer. It certainly feels odd. People aren't going outside. There's panic buying of bottled water (although I think that's premature). I'm going back to work tomorrow after the Christmas break. I imagine that's going to feel even weirder.
Fortunately, there have yet to be any within the ACT. Although, I was hiking in the Namadgi National Park and the area near Corin Dam in winter and autumn, and large chunks those areas look ready to burn. I haven't seen Corin Dam at the low levels it currently is at since the last drought, 15-20 years ago.

More importantly I hit the pleasingly named 69s for the first time today. I started on 88 and want 69.0. So far so good.

!972 or thereabout I worked in forestry which included fire fighting. Mainly did cleanup, but had to do some suppression when the fire started to burn in the rotted wood layer that worked as soil and was 5-10 feet deep. Scary as hell because the surface could collapse and you could fall into a burning sinkhole.
One day a fire emerged that had traveled underground through the subsoil for several hundred yards past the fireline and popped up in some lush second growth and we had a scary time keeping it from spreading until the main crew with the equipment showed up.

Well that's what the Trump haters are assuming. Seems his approach is "unhinged". Now am I wrong in thinking that the usual securely hinged president would already have pronounced with great statesmanlike solemnity and gravity that "this aggression will not stand" and would have told us there was no option but to flatten some Iranian landmarks? Trump, for all his clumsy language, looks as if he is trying to play this down as an expected Iranian tantrum. My guess is that he going to try to send a message something along the lines of "we achieved our aim, Iranians put on a show and lucky for them, didn't do any real damage so all is well". This assumes no US casualties. I take him at his word that he strongly favours extricating the US from it's military quagmires, however I think he is surrounded by the usual collection of establishment warhawks who really want a war with Iran.

I can still do a Millin retropubic prostatectomy or a really ancient transvesical prostatectomy in my sleep. I suspect I could still stick a finger where it would be unwanted and estimate reasonably accurately the amount of prostatic chips that would be retrieved after a TURP. 80g prostate?
