The world is a scary place, I guess.
A service of candlelight, chants, prayers and readings will be offered at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Peace Lutheran Church in [....] The service will provide a moment of calm and an opportunity to privately lift up personal concerns in a supportive atmosphere....

This brief service follows the Taizé style of evening prayers. It embraces people of all faiths and those with no faith affiliation, and helps people feel centered and find connection in a busy and frightening world. The service includes short, simple prayers chanted to sacred, yet easy tunes. Peace musicians lead the worship with music sung in harmony. Participants will have the opportunity to light candles and lift up prayers. All are welcome, regardless of religious tradition or affiliation.
I skipped the service and instead chatted with a friend who was getting loopy on Woodford Reserve.

Trump shot down the Ukrainian jet because Zelensky didn't give him the dirt on Biden and he wanted to kill Canadians because the CBC edited his cameo out of its airing of Home Alone 2. :hand:

Sounds like this could have been any UU church meeting from the last 40 - 50 years.

RIP Buck Henry

I grew up watching Get Smart reruns, and though I was a little kid I still remember him on SNL which is a good thing because NBC is never going to let those Uncle Roy sketches be seen again.

I remember reading a Buck Henry article in Playboy about his visit to a sex club. It was fucking hilarious. It mentioned some tranny inviting everyone to shove some fingers into zir new front hole.

He also wrote the script for TO DIE FOR which is loosely based on the Pam Smart case, and is wickedly funny.

What's Up, Doc? is also worth a view - a mix of farce/screwball/romantic comedy. Screwball comedy is one of the most difficult things to do well, and while it may not as awesome as, say, My Man Godfey, it's still great.

Saw 1917. I don't think it deserved the Golden Globe for Best Drama-that should've been Ford Versus Ferrari-but it's definitely worth seeing. It's a technical marvel in that it looks like there are only 2 shots in the entire movie. I kept looking for camera angles where I thought they might have made the edit-like when the characters walk behind a wall or tree and the camera follows from the other side.
Except for a few lines delivered by a Sikh in a troop truck, it seems free of PC and forced diversity.

I never really got drag. It's mostly guys just lip-synching. I have a friend in NY who does it, but does comedy in his drag personna. I wouldn't worry too much about the kids at story hour. I doubt the queens are going to do raunchy material, and the kids are just going to think they're clowns.

I watched Hunger Games tonight. Saw it in the theater in 2012, but I think I had cold/ in a front row seat/ far off to one side.

Tonight's viewing was because I'm halfway-through sharing Heinlein's 'Tunnel in the Sky' with muh girlfriend, via audiobook on YouTube.
She digs it. So why-not watch the derivative recent version.

I was struck by how awkwardly the Hunger Games imagery has aged. The poor white rural coal-miner protagonists are today's deplorables. And the decadent overdressed ruling class-- look like the Viviennne Westwood kabuki costumery of today's woke celebrities: Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Justin Trudeau.

I had forgotten the ElevatorGate-era social media controversies surrounding the book & film: That was the year when simpletons were proclaiming KONY 2012 to promote a documentary about the Lord's Resistance Army child soldiers in Africa. So, of course, Jezebel.com whipped their NPCs into a frenzy-- by claiming Hunger Games glamorized the issue of child soldiers.

I also recall pop-culture nerd feminists-- actual people I knew & formerly-respected... urging their facebook friends... to buy tickets to Hunger Games... because it was Important to 'send a message' to Hollywood about female protagonists in movies. The feminists indulged-themselves in believing they were real-life resistance fighters-- striking a blow against the real-life patriarchy-- by spending real-life money in solidarity with the fictional heroine. As if big budget blockbuster franchises are a charity cause.

Wikipedia sez there was one controversy complaining-about Jennifer Lawrence being too curvy to portray a food-deprived oppression-victim... and another controversy complaining-about the first controversy... for imposing starvation-body standards on hollywood millionaire actresses who portray starving characters.

Another Hunger Games controversy was-about how young fans of the book-- were complaining on Tumblr that their beloved sidekick character -- had been 'changed' to being-black, for the movie. But, apparently, she was black in the book, too. The complaining fans were deemed racist.

I find it mildly-intriguing to switch-back from that racial-diversity kerfuffle-- to Heinlein's 1966 'Tunnel In The Sky'. Which is FULL of Heinlein trying to be edgy and woke-- with heavy-handed Diversity. The main character is hinted at being brown-skinned. His sister is a manly 'Amazon' female special forces combatant. There's a 'zulu' chick who is a suburb hunter and fighter. And gender-reveal of a 'boy' who is a girl in disguise. And lots of cartoonishly Ethnic minor character names. 46 years before 2012. When MLK Jr. was still alive.

Similarly, the de facto moratorium of people that used to work in the porn industry from working in education or in the health industry always seemed prudish to me.

They should be able to get jobs as teachers and nurses - and not just play them on TV.

A few years ago I did this dna ancestry test with a company called Family Tree, and the results cast doubt on my parentage because it said I did not share any genes with the country I knew my grandfather came from. With both parents dead I couldn't ask them any questions. For Christmas, my husband got me a 23and Me test. These test results dispute the previous test and aligns more with what I expected a dna ancestry test would find. My only theory is that the Family Tree test(which was only supposed to test the y chromosome) instead tested my mitochondrial dna.
A few surprises from 23and Me: more Neanderthal variants than average, 3% Turkish, 0.5% sub-Saharan African, so by the one drop rule-developed by Jim Crow Era racists, but used by modern progressives-I'm a POC! Yes, I will be demanding reparations, and asking you to check your white privilege.

My white privilege check is in the mail, Kat man.

MY MAN GODFREY is a delight.

WHAT'S UP DOC is cute.

THE HUNGER GAMES is an excellent film in its own right, in large part due to the rewriting and directing of Gary Ross. Interestingly, the denizens of District 11 -- located somewhere in the former southeast US, are cast with a mix of ethnicities. In the sequel, directed by a former music video director, everyone in 11 is black.

Speaking of diversity casting, we just finished watching Season 4 of The Expanse. Amazing as ever. But it was picked up by Netflix, and the show's former pleasingly random casting re. ethnicity has been overtaken by negrophilia. Somehow, the human race went from being half asian and 10% black in the 21st century to 10% asian and half black in the 24th. Actually, that transformation only took one year and one woke streaming service.

It has been 30 years since the fall of the Berlin wall. Wow. I remember when it happened and it made me weep. And watching this presentation also brings tears to my eyes. I speak a bit of German and have traveled there many times. A German girl spent a year with my family in High School and she is my bonus daughter. I love walking around Berlin and enjoying traditional food.... and I have never found a proper sauerkraut in the US.

Schnapps is great... and sauerbraten is to die for... haha.

Anyway. If you like this bit of history I recommend this video. I didn't know Peter Robinson wrote the "Tear down this wall" speech.

I am so disappointed that people don't understand or remember the horrors of central planning these days. I guess that youth is prone to making these kinds of mistakes.... but ... how quickly we forget.

A widespread belief has developed among progressives that art should be diversity/inclusion/equality propaganda A significant majority of critics have become modern day apparatchiks who will automatically give positive reviews to anything promoting the propaganda and negative reviews to anything challenging it. It's led to review aggregation sites becoming useless and having to develop your own list of trusted critics to have confidence that a movie/play/book will likely be something you enjoy.

The Daniel Craig movies have all been pretty dark and brooding, but Casino Royale has been the only good one (and, in fact, my favorite of all the Bond films). Skyfall was probably the best looking Bond movie, but it completely lacked the essential feel of the series, and I had to be reminded by the injection of the Bond theme baseline about 80% of the way into the movie that i was even watching a Bond film.

I have a chunk of it my mother-in-law scored for me.

I love walking around Berlin and enjoying traditional food....
Mampes Gute Stube was my favorite restaurant, on the Kudamm, not far from KaDeWe. But after the wall came down, it closed and was replaced by a Mövenpick ice cream stand. The fuckers.

Had a great meal/drinking fest at another stube, Zum Mandelbaum, in the East, near the Gendarmenmarkt. Paid for the entire table with the Ostmarks I'd smuggled in, but was still short so I topped off with lots of Westmarks. Also left the waitress a monster tip. She was ecstatic. Bought herself a Sekt at the bar as we were leaving. Probably also bought herself a new TV on the black market or a parking spot for her Trabi. I wonder if the place is still there....

One night I suggested we go to a nice restaurant on Sophienstrasse, but was told don't bother going in; only party members got tables there.
I have never found a proper sauerkraut in the US.
Try Silver Floss brand.

I was fortunate to be in Berlin on the weekend the wall came down. I was doing consultancy for a pharma company (the FRD used to pay handsomely for gesellschaften to set up sites in Berlin).

The feeling was unbelievable, and I don't believe I slept for about 36 hours when it was all happening. I managed to pick my own bit of wall (from right by the Brandenburg Gate). The quality of construction was really, REALLY crappy.

I felt so privileged to have been part of that, and have never been able to communicate JUST how it felt to anyone who wasn't there. I'd spent a fair bit of time in the city in the previous years, and always used to stay in a short-term let in Fasanenstrasse, just by the Memorial church. The apartment had once been the home of Jenny Lind.

An article that begins by noting the large influence Mimi Sheraton, Gael Greene, and Ruth Reichel have had on restaurant criticism that later uses boilerplate about a "white-male monopoly." Hmmm. For someone who wants restaurant reviews to include a broader cultural context, Gioia doesn't seem interested in considering restaurant criticism within the larger context of writing about food. He would have found the topics he wants discussed. For that matter:
Theodore Gioia is a critic living in San Francisco. His work has appeared in The Believer, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Virginia Quarterly Review. He is currently writing a book on California’s changing food culture.
He has access to publications and editors. He could write the reviews he wants to see. If they're successful there will be plenty of imitators. It seemed like every drug addled chef who could string two sentences together got a book deal after Anthony Bourdain hit it big. Writing half baked faux-manifestos is a bit easier and requires less talent and imagination.

What he calls for already exists. It just isn't called a restaurant review. It's called writing about food and cooking. Critics have been writing this stuff the entire time. Just usually not in reviews that have to compete for space against the ads and recipes found in the four or six page food section that appears once a week in the average newspaper. This isn't even a solution in search of a problem. It's some vague whining in search of a problem.

Anyone here want to drop $75 on a candle that smells like Gwyneth Paltrow's vagina?

You can save $73.50 by opening a can of tuna and leaving it in the sun for a bit.

Here's a rather odd Russian movie (with English subtitles) for the tankers among you:

One year ago today, I was lying on a hospital bed waiting to receive a much younger man's organ. There were several people watching to make sure I didn't bleed too much.

And then I drove to the hospital to get a liver transplant.

It's been a funny 12 months, with some ups (feeling better and better) and downs (infections from 3 of the 5 infective classes: bacteria, viral, and fungal). But it has been a weirdly positive experience. My life will be much shorter now than I would have thought 3 years ago, but it will be better. I did drink a lot, and I was a proper fat cunt, so I know I deserved the liver failure, but it's still a fucking big shock to get told you're dying. Then again, it's a lot better to have cirrhosis as your imminent death reason than say cancer, because as I've seen you can transplant your way out of trouble and magic the problem away. You can't do that with the other C.

I've always hated people who talk like this, but here we go anyway: my 3 years of getting clean and then getting cured have for sure made me a better and happier person. Heavy, daily drinking is fun for the first decade, and then a really fucking boring, expensive, time-consuming, tiring, degrading way to live for the next decade. I was so fucking bored of drinking by the end that I was kind of glad to have something come along and force my hand. Having said that, it did take a few months after the diagnosis - along with some pain - to finally quit, but still the point stands. I can't forget the evening of my first blood tests, when I had gone to a gastroenterologist and said "Doc, I'd like to quit drinking but first can you tell me what damage I've done?" He did the tests, got the results and called me, saying "You need to stop drinking now, I'm worried about you." His concern was obvious. At that point there was a clear and stark choice in front of me: drink or live.

I took a bottle of wine into the back yard to think about this new development.

He was - and is - a good guy, and truly the one who saved my life. Previously, medical folks had been less helpful: I saw my spineless, shifty-eyed GP a couple of years before and asked him for help quitting drinking. He prescribed me a handful of benzodiepines and said, "take these when you quit, you might have seizures otherwise".

I had a living donor, an incredible person who decided to give it a go with immensely noncholant selflessness. Several such people offered to throw me their organ, and this was the most amazing thing to see: people who would risk pain, lost money, and death, all for just saving my life and getting a fucking wicked scar to show off at the beach. I even had people from the Pit contact me to ask about the donation process, including one person who went and got themselves tested for suitability. Unbelievable.

I wish I had wrested philosophical truths from the gods during the despair and anguish of my time spent dancing with death, but sadly I remain the same simple moron I ever was. I always preferred Beavis and Butthead to Seinfeld. All I've got is the Golden Rule: treat other people as you would like to be treated. You never know when you might need one of their organs.

Now... I don't agree with crazy Christians scaring people... but... who really thinks it is a good idea to have sex performance artists read stories to little kids? It fucking blows my mind that the progressives think this is a good idea.

And so AHA defends the whole thing... of course. Does anyone on the left think there is such a thing as being age appropriate? When will we see little 10 yo boys dancing for dollar bills in gay bars.... oh... too late.

All my internal organs are right where they should be. Slightly foxed but still desirable in the words of the great Thelwell.

On the the 13th dry day - lets see how January turn out.

And to your very good health, one and all.

On consideration it was probably Searle.

In any case my internal components are in their assigned positions - in whole or in part I am not in any sense trans.
