Fantastic news, John! Hopefully the days ahead bring more good times and (fingers crossed) a marked improvement in your situation.John D wrote: ↑My wife has been home since yesterday afternoon. Her good friend helped a bunch because I had a few important meetings and couldn't get her from the hospital. My wife is in pretty good spirits today. The nurse came by and said all is well. We had some friends visit and this was good for her. She can shower and use the toilet on her own and just needs help with meals and pills and such. Pretty good news overall. She has a stabbing pain over her kidneys that she has had since before the surgery. This pain will not go away. Not a good sign... but there is no value in worry. On Tuesday the doc will pull out her dozens of staples from her two foot long incision. Perhaps we will develop a treatment plan on Tuesday as well... we will see. We talked with our fiends about the trips will will take soon. Good friends.

"But Mommm! Johnny hit me firrrrst!" ;)
Kinda think there's an important principle in play, mostly having to do with accuracy of reporting.
De nada; it's a favourite. As you suggest, it gives some insight into the "thought" processes of animals, and thereby our own. ICYMI, another related one about cats and mirrors - be sure to watch at least the last 10 seconds or so ;)
:handgestures-thumbupright: :) But with good fiends, who needs enemies? ;)
Re: Back to Conspiratoria
Often a lot of meat in them of more than passing relevance. Couple of my favourites are the fox and the crow with the cheese, and the fox and the stork. Not really an Aesop's fable, but another favourite in the same vein is the parable of the blind men and the elephant - just as relevant these days as it presumably was 2500 years ago when it first showed up:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_men_and_an_elephant
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fox_and_the_Grapes
Don't recollect running across that one, but interesting to see it's the source of the expression "sour grapes" - possibly what you were getting at with your closing "apply it to whatever argument's side it makes most sense" ... ;)
Though not sure about your closing conclusion. No doubt we can believe a lie, and maybe get away with doing so for some time. But at some point the piper has to be paid - and often at "inconvenient" times.
Not sure if you followed much of Sam Harris painting himself into tight corners in suggesting a "basement full of the corpses of children" would be a small price to pay to keep Trump out of the White House, but Substacker, recent math graduate, and childhood abuser survivor "Holly Math Nerd" had some choice comments on Harris' own "crimes":
https://hollymathnerd.substack.com/p/a- ... sam-harrisThe author of a brilliant, inspiring, book-length argument against lying has become deranged to the point that he sees widespread lying, to a level even he is willing to admit does in fact constitute a conspiracy, as warranted—if it stops the guy he hates from winning an election.
Maybe there can be "extenuating" circumstances, but Harris, and many others, sure seem on the proverbial slippery slope to perdition. I'd weighed-in there myself with a comment or two, including a quote from a favourite author, Philip Wylie:
https://hollymathnerd.substack.com/p/a- ... nt/8479676"[Man] would learn that when he kids himself, or believes a lie, or deceives another man, he commits a crime as real and as destructive as the crime of deliberately running down a person with an automobile. ....” [pg. 15]
But a couple of cogent insights, and a damning indictment of Harris there by UK lawyer Helen Dale:
https://hollymathnerd.substack.com/p/a- ... nt/8488617I’m happy putting anyone into office: actors, scientists, businesspeople, escorts, whatever. As long as they’re good at the task we give to politics alone, which is ethical reckoning. Politics is the art of telling other people how to live and getting away with it because the instructions are of a type to which we have freely consented at the ballot box.
Sam Harris's inability to understand this (something taught to first year lawyers throughout the UK & British Commonwealth as part of a subject called "legal method") is what has lead directly to the "corpses of children in the basement" comment. It's evidence of someone who is morally stunted.
Re: Back to Conspiratoria
Fucking hell... my wife and I tested positive for Covid this morning. She has had a cough for the last three days but we thought it was probably due to the surgery. I think she had it a few days ago... and then I caught it from her. My first symptom was this morning with a sore throat. The doctor has been contacted and will call us back. Maybe they will want to give her monoclonal antibodies.

Hollywood -- where being type-cast as a muff-diver now can launch a career.

Olivia Wilde has come a long way from the teenager who played the bratty, bisexual bad girl on The O.C. Today, she’s a full-blown movie star who directed the award-winning comedy Booksmart, and this fall will level up with Don’t Worry Darling, a Slim Aarons–inspired erotic thriller starring Florence Pugh and Wilde’s real-life boyfriend Harry Styles. Someone who knows what life is like on both sides of the camera is The Lost Daughter director Maggie Gyllenhaal, who met Wilde at a Paris hotel to talk all about it.
WILDE: Terrifying. We based that character on this insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community. You know the incels?
GYLLENHAAL: No.
WILDE: They’re basically disenfranchised, mostly white men, who believe they are entitled to sex from women.
GYLLENHAAL: Oh, right.
WILDE: And they believe that society has now robbed them—that the idea of feminism is working against nature, and that we must be put back into the correct place.
GYLLENHAAL: Well, they must be psyched. Things are going really well for them.
WILDE: Yeah, they’re actually succeeding in many different ways. But this guy Jordan Peterson is someone that legitimizes certain aspects of their movement because he’s a former professor, he’s an author, he wears a suit, so they feel like this is a real philosophy that should be taken seriously.
GYLLENHAAL: Wow.
WILDE: Yeah. But it was a dream to work with all these evolved men on this movie who understood what we were trying to say.
GYLLENHAAL: It doesn’t feel pedantic or overly simplistic.
WILDE: Good. I wanted it to be a hot movie that’s a good time and that if later it leads to some conversations, that’s great. But I was trying to create that world of Slim Aarons’s version of 1950s, ’60s Palm Springs, and so, as a female director, it was quite funny for me to be the one saying, “I need more bikinis, more tans. I want everybody sexy, sexy, sexy.”
GYLLENHAAL: There’s a scene with all the women saying goodbye in the morning to the guys in their cars—it’s very stylized, and Florence is in a man’s white shirt, so it’s a trope and a fantasy cliché. But because I know it’s directed by you, that’s a part of my viewing of the movie, so I was like, “How is this going to come back around and be bigger than this image of this hot girl in her boyfriend’s shirt?” And then when that same shot does come back later when you have way more information, you’re like, “Yes, I was waiting for it!” It’s very satisfying.

I would skip the allopathic treatments like monoclonal antibodies and Ivermectin and instead of taking experimental manmade "remedies" use what God has provided us for free.

Whereas I, unvaccinated, haven't caught Covid at all since March 2020. Anyway. Likely she caught it because she's more vulnerable due to the cancer. Reduces your immune system and all. I wouldn't recommend Remdesivir, though, like so many others think help (it doesn't) and especially not on ventilators in conjunction as it builds fluids in the lungs (in particular to someone who is immune deficient) and you drown. Honestly, the best remedy is you treat it like any common cold and you calm the fuck down. Grab a towel and DON'T. Although doctors aren't perfect they are the best bet we have. It is sometimes a good idea to have questions at the ready for the doctors and to have them explain treatments. If I want to look for more detail on the internet I make sure to look for science based accredited sites like WebMD. Paying attention to celebrity windbags like Dr. Oz or youtubers is worse than a waste of time.Pitchguest wrote: ↑Whereas I, unvaccinated, haven't caught Covid at all since March 2020. Anyway. Re: Back to Conspiratoria
Last night's shooter ditched his scooter on the bridge, but he was apprehended. Last I checked, an additional suspect was still at-large.
Fish market ended early today, because the Captain thought customers would be outta town for the long weekend. Maybe so-- foot traffic was pleasantly light. But the ones who came came-early, and they had grilling & feasting plans... we sold out of every scrap. So we bought a bottle of vodka distilled by the old lady with a potato farm, and some cheese & peaches & bread. And sat on ice coolers in our booth, looking at tits. Drinking & snacking.
The Dominican parade is today in Manhattan & the West Indian Day parade is tomorrow in Brooklyn... which means two straight days of young guys driving around with Caribbean flags on their cars, blasting loud music, hanging out windows... and a subset taking advantage of the clamor by settling gang scores with drive-by shoot outs. The huge glass panels of the Brooklyn Apple Store are covered-over in white vinyl. Maybe because of the new phone release/ maybe because those windows are big targets for smashing. The portapotty at the farmer's market was a disgusting mess... and unfortunately... the Brooklyn Main Library (which the woke assholes abbreviate as BLM, so they can put those giant letters across the front) is closed for the holiday, so the best bathrooms were closed. And even my personal stand of evergreens & bushes-- in a little triangular median off the Grand Army Plaza roundabout-- was fenced off by the NYPD... so the parade-goers won't piss&shit&stomp it. The NYPD Barricade crew was setting up an endless 'bike rack' fence, along the parade route.
One of our regular fish customers is a Caribbean woman in her 60's with 3 fat old chihuahuas min-pins dachshunds... or something. I think of them as Cerberus. She dropped-by after we sold-out, and told us about her daughter: in 2019, at age 41, her daughter was in a bank ATM atrium late at night in the Bronx. 3 girls-- age 19-- pounded on the glass door, wanting to be let-in. The daughter refused. The girls waited outside, beat her, broke her leg, and she died in the hospital 10 days later of a bloodclot. I guess it was a big headline, for a day. But I don't recall seeing-it. The court case was postponed due to Covid and the murderers are out free on no-cash parole due to Woke Justice. The case is getting stale... the prosecutors are bored & don't care. They want the mother to meet with the killers and offer leniency. Mother says no-- she wants convictions and justice. Her younger daughter took the death + lockdowns poorly & has anxiety-- doesn't leave the house. One murderer's mother gives the victim's mother mean looks & attitude in court.

You know, the tragic thing is that we were ASSURED - were were told EXPLICITLY - that gender reassignment would not happen to children, that any treatment on children would be reversible. So how do you reverse a double mastectomy? Are they castrating children as well? Even the puberty blockers they say are harmless are not. They stunt your growth and prolonged use will render you infertile. There is no way you can fix that by taking hormones. They are ruining the lives of children all in the name of "social justice."Service Dog wrote: ↑free thoughtpolice wrote: ↑ Although doctors aren't perfect they are the best bet we have. It's my perception that you seemed to have had a hate on for screwtape because he made comments about covid and masks that you didn't agree with. I think your trolling may well have helped convince him to stop posting here. If so you can take credit for helping to bully an ill man that has been fighting for his life to quit a social connection. Congrats.
As for you pointing out the trans quackery, I don't disagree with you. I think this is a fad that kids have been gullible enough to buy in to and there are some unscientific quacks that do a great disservice by promoting it. I suspect that most of the people aren't medical doctors or properly accredited psychologists or psychiatrists but rather social workers or counsellors that are notoriousy poorly trained, unqualified and generally useless.
As for doctors, as I said they are not all perfect. Some are very good, most OK, and some are useless. I brought my concerns about a doctor that was treating a loved one to the authorities. It turned out I wasn't the only one. My loved one got a new doctor, the useless doctor was fired from her clinic, and had her medical license yanked. I don't blindly trust doctors.
For example, I sure as hell don't trust Dr. Stella Immanuel the Ivermectin advocate that also believed many maladies were caused by demons raping people in their sleep.
A large ripe apple contains 25 grams of sugar. I weighed a heaping tablespoon of sugar and it came to 20 grams. I don't think screwtape's guess was far from accurate as some people would add less sugar, some might add more. If that is your attempt to discredit him you are doing a lousy job, especially as he himself said it wasn't to be taken as an exact amount."I used to explain it to [diabetic] patients by having them imagine biting into a tart unripe apple, then imagining how much sugar they would have to heap on that apple to make it taste nice. Do you think John is looking-to Dr. Stella "demons rape people in their sleep" Immanuel, for medical guidance for his wife?
(I doubt it. John's actual favorite YouTube medical voice-of-reason is Dr. John Campbell-- whose job is to train nurses at a hospital... and Campbell is exactingly-careful to broadcast anything which would not pass muster within mainstream medical best practices. Of course-- you studiously ignore this and pretend we get our info from QAnon and Pee-Drinking Freaks none of us have even heard of. Don't forget to warn John not to drink bleach or fishtank cleaner!)
Do you think John was an uncritical proponent of Ivermectin? (Far from it.)
Or... do you think John wanted the Ivermectin-crowd to shut up until Double Blind Control Studies were performed? (One of the 1st mentions of Ivermectin on the 'pyt was John saying exactly-that. But you'd rather tell strawman lies, than face reality.

Pure passive-aggressive game playing. Taunt someone long enough they take a swing at you then you play the victim. Now that he can't answer back you keep slandering him.

Re: Back to Conspiratoria
De nada; share the wealth; praise the lord and pass the ammunition ... :)
But definitely an impressive writer; ICYMI, an archived copy of an earlier essay of hers at Quillette on "Attack of the Offendotrons: Tyranny of the Flash Mob":
https://archive.ph/HzWU4
Thanks for the link & heads-up. I'd seen it in the ToC of her Substack, but hadn't had time to read it. This passage kinda leapt out at me as something of a damning indictment of portions of modern society:Fegg wrote: ↑Her take on Jordan Peterson is worth reading:
https://helendale.substack.com/p/why-be ... new-normal
But ICYMI, you might also have some interest in her latest on "a paper where someone is literally funded for little more than playing with his dick"; increasing justification for closing most "Humanities Departments" in various universities, and putting their denizens out digging ditches:But—putting aside all the pokes at him, many of them ideologically motivated—his advice is sound. Baby barrister me started out in the trial division of the Queensland Supreme Court in what is sometimes known euphemistically as “the regions”. And most of the people who finish up in front of the beak in Australian country towns simply haven’t been parented. All the things we think are absolutely standard and should come pre-installed don’t. Families are a mess, there’s domestic violence; kids don’t go to school, or if they do they don’t learn anything; toddlers subsist on junk food. I have seen fat, toothless 19-year-olds in the dock.
https://helendale.substack.com/p/dont-t ... people-you
Maybe some peripheral interest in some of a brief "conversation" I'm having with her on UK philosopher Kathleen Stock:
https://helendale.substack.com/p/dont-t ... nt/8773801
Her comment links to an article of hers on "What Kathleen Stock gets wrong about the Tories, trans and feminism":
https://capx.co/what-kathleen-stock-get ... -feminism/
Interesting article, cogent observations, and useful links, although I think she's somewhat wide of the mark on her statistics. However, her review of Stock's "Material Girls" - archive link in the CapX article - betrays a quite "problematic" endorsement of the rather unscientific definitions for the sexes:
Quite true - as she acknowledges - that sex is defined by "reproductive function". But what logically follows from that is no function, no sex.If your body is structured to produce sperm, you are male, regardless of whether any viable gametes are produced. If your body is structured to produce eggs, you are female, also regardless of whether any viable gametes are produced. Sex is defined by reproductive function. If there are only two types of gametes, then there is no third sex, and sex is binary.

Ok people, listen up.
If you are going to discuss COVID please remember that it is fast moving, and you may or may not be discussing the same variant (last time I checked the original one is extinct except perhaps in China) and there is no "vaccine" currently available for it/them (but I have heard there is one recently developed for the latest variant) and may be available real soon.
Also bear in mind that the latest variant has no ancestor but rather while it is related to the Wuhan variant, it is not descended from it {insert conspiracy theory to explain this}.
But, do your own research.
Have fun wading through the thousands and thousands of confusing, misleading, misdirecting, information omitting papers and reports filled with bullshyte including those published by august publications such as Nature et al. Never mind the retracted one in the Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine.
Something is going on, life insurance companies have sat up and taken notice of unexpected excess deaths for example, and apparently a lot of people are dubious that long COVID is even a thing.
Good luck to us all. We are going to need it.
Remember, Google is your fiend (yes, fiend not friend) but use it anyway, and I will not blame you personally for anything you come up with no matter how misleading, wrong, dangerous or otherwise incorrect notions you spout.
The truth is out there ... somewhere, but not necessarily in one place.

Girls girls… come on… bicker bicker bicker.
After many phone calls my wife and I got a script for Paxlovid. I told my wife I might ride it out instead, but she screamed at me that she needed me to take care of her. She is right about that… so we had our first day of the five day treatment. Who knows if it even works.
I do listen to most videos by John Carpenter. He does a great job explaining the studies and he is measured in his approach.
Matt… your horse pill post was fantastic.
Covid is a very unusual experience. Hours of fatigue followed by no symptoms. Then muscle pain and a metal taste in your mouth. And then coughing. Jesus… I would like this to end.
My wife has lots of coughing which sucks because of her giant incision. The doc said that she needed to go to the emergency room if her blood oxygen dropped below 90. So far she is running at 97 or 98 so we are hanging tight.
We have so many people who are helping us. We have fantastic friends and family… a real blessing.

What are your orders, Chief? ;)
"august" - quote, unquote. Much of Nature seems to have gone woke:
https://whyevolutionistrue.com/2022/08/ ... -rejected/Nature: Manuscripts that are ideologically impure and “harmful” will be rejected
Pinker weighs in there:
Journalists & psychologists take note: Nature Human Behavior is no longer a peer-reviewed scientific journal but an enforcer of a political creed. I won't referee, publish, or cite (how do we know articles have been vetted for truth rather than political correctness)?
Indeed. No one gets out of here alive ...
Yeah. No doubt quite a bit of fact out there but a great deal of BS. Much of it peddled by Academia itself as the Coyne article and Pinker tweet illustrates. Methinks they need to get their house in order before many of the denizens are booted out on their ears.AndrewV69 wrote: ↑Remember, Google is your fiend (yes, fiend not friend) but use it anyway, and I will not blame you personally for anything you come up with no matter how misleading, wrong, dangerous or otherwise incorrect notions you spout.

NY Post says Black Car pounded on Grey Car's windshield with a gun. Grey Car said "There's money in the bag" on the passenger seat. Which Black Car took & fled.
GF suspects Grey Car was taking Saturday's night's cash to the bank-- for a bar or restaurant. And this was a planned robbery. Makes sense. I wonder how the incident began... before the clip begins... with Grey Car going the Wrong Way on 2nd Ave.

Ever since watching that where-to-stab-someone Hard2Hurt video... featuring the MDV Plus One knife... I've been contemplating designs for nyc-law-compliant devices. The limitations of nyc's absurd laws-- have pushed me out of the comfort zone of thinking one folding pocket-knife is nearly-as-good as any other. My thoughts have evolved into more lethal, concealable, harder-to-detect (or prosecute) concepts.
Last night I was sitting at the dinner table, holding various household utensils, comparing grip, weight, etc.
GF took interest & started showing me her kitchen cutlery... describing features, how they handle with wet slippery hands, and stabbings she'd seen in alleys behind Japanese kitchens. ha ha. holy shit. (She uses a Cutco set, matching the paring-knife below.)
I had already concluded that generic disposable boxcutter handles are packed with design features... stuff you see in 'tactical' designs. (Other aspects of boxcutters are far from optimal... outside their primary role.)
The grey template on the right... with the tiny hatchet head... attempts to contain everything I know about ergonomics...
into one device. I picked-up a full set of Chicago Cutlery kitchen knives, free on Craigslist. (Shitty chinese ones, not the decent pre-90's American ones.) I'm gonna trace various template shapes onto those... and angle-grinder dully dummy prototypes, to see how they feel.
Here's an colorful semi-accurate history of the krappy "OO7" knife which was a problem in 1970's nyc... and led to some of nyc's googy laws. https://axischemicals.wordpress.com/201 ... 007-knife/

Fortunately, not everyone that has been scared away from covid vaccines are afraid of vaccines in general, unfortunately the antivax movement has gotten somewhat stronger.Pitchguest wrote: ↑Please don't tell me you seriously believe being hesitant of the Covid vaccine means you're hesitant of all vaccines.
Oddly many people that refuse covid vaccines do so for the reason that they don't trust the "new, untested" messenger rna vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna.
The thing is, many of these people refuse all covid vaccines, even though there are vaccines made from older methods of producing vaccine such as the vector method ( Astra Zeneca) or subunit method (Novavax).
Another odd thing is the anti-vax movement used to be mainly a goofy left wing thing with the new age types and others but is now big in the goofy right wing movements.

(I like KnifeCenter's sales talk videos on YouTube, but their selection is becoming too familiar.
And mall ninja sites like Budk are more anythings-goes/ but also too anything-goes.)
Only made a few cuts, before the grinder battery died. Recharging now.
Biden was right about dragging a straight-razor on the sidewalk & leaving it in the rain-barrel.
Scrap pieces like this are sharper & more-deadly than anything made with craft & care.
As I worked, I listened-to Dave Smith's reaction-- to Biden's blood-red rant.
Dave said Biden has gall-- to accuse MAGA of being a threat to gay marriage:
Trump was the 1st president to campaign & enter-office on Day 1... pro gay marriage.
When Biden was VP... Biden & Obama bemoaned "They're re-defining marriage... as NOT between One Man and One Woman!"
Also (my observation, not Dave's) Biden sez he can work with the normie Republicans, just-not the MAGA ones.
And Biden sez Trump is no exemplar of christian conservative values.
But... those are normie Federalist Society republicans Trump put-on the Supreme Court. And actual christian conservatives.
And THEY are doing the things Biden is freaking-out about.
EXCEPT Trump's SCOTUS appointees did NOT support overturning the election. In other words: they aren't MAGA shills.
So what is Biden freaking-out about? Either nothing (if MAGA doesn't hold real power)
or else he's freaking-out about the normie GOP (while denying doing-so).
ahhh... it's all just dumb. I'm trying to make sense of nonsense.

Re: Back to Conspiratoria
Unfortunately, the reason why the antivax movement has gotten stronger is all due to the actions of people like Fauci, the CDC and the WHO. If you should blame someone for bolstering their numbers, blame them. Before the pandemic, the definition of a vaccine was something to be trusted. Something that was effective, prevented infection and strengthened your immune system. After the Covid vaccine didn't have ANY of those qualities they changed the definition of what a vaccine is IN THE DICTIONARY where a vaccine now just basically means something that prevents you from becoming seriously ill when you DO get infected.free thoughtpolice wrote: ↑Fortunately, not everyone that has been scared away from covid vaccines are afraid of vaccines in general, unfortunately the antivax movement has gotten somewhat stronger.Pitchguest wrote: ↑Please don't tell me you seriously believe being hesitant of the Covid vaccine means you're hesitant of all vaccines.

Which is, of course, ridiculous, as it would have you ignore over a hundred years of mankind using vaccines to prevent disease and immunising entire generations worth to the point where one such virus went extinct. It's also ludicrous in concept because it would have you believe that people all over the world still break out in measles, mumps and rubella, just the vaccine doesn't kill them.
(When you get infected with rabies there is a vaccine for that, too. But since it doesn't actually remove the infection anymore, at least according to the CDC and the dictionary, that means you're gonna have to use rabies boosters for the rest of your life. Or not.)
All that work previous generations did to make sure vaccines actually WORK and to ENSURE people they're SAFE - undone. In a fortnight. Which is ironically what they said was all the time we needed to slow the spread.
