Hey, cousin caveman! :) I don't think any of my Neanderthal shows physically. I don't have the long toe, and I think my skull bone shape is normal. My score is only a little over the average which is 2.3%. Still though.AndrewV69 wrote:*wave*Scented Nectar wrote: I'm all distracted with most of my gene results being in at 23andme. All the health stuff is in, but the ancestry stuff might take up to another week. Although it seems that enough has been looked so far that they can tell me I'm 2.5% Neanderthal, if anyone's interested. That gives me the giggles for some reason.
Are any of the traits expressed such as the "long toe" (which I have)?

Atheism plus was also attacked in form of Urban Dictionary definitionj, where atheism plus was defined almost as feminazi site. Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Yea, that seems reasonably analogous, although it’s not really gendered which seems to make things so much worse in the FTB/Skepchick lexicon – at least that was the argument that the Man Boobz regulars were peddling to me as to why “asshole†was acceptable but the gendered insults were not. But it also seems to be considered – at least over there – as “ableist†and such terms have likewise been anathematized.rayshul wrote:Well I'm going to keep using idiot, so I guess that shows where I stand on these matters. That's the closest I could think of to cunt.Steersman wrote: Although I don’t see that a case could be made for “fucking†– the word only seems to add emphasis, I would say that “idiot†is probably analogous. Particularly since PZ and Carrier, among others, have argued, although not particularly well or very credibly, that it qualifies as an insult towards an entire group, similar to their position on gendered insults.
But I really have to wonder about the increasing level of insults – and the related “piling-onâ€. If there isn’t an emotional response then it’s a waste of both time and effort, and if there is such a response then presumably they’re used in lieu of rational arguments and criticisms – neither stance being particularly credible. Maybe there’s some justification – sort of like the nuclear option – when rational debate has broken down, but I think it tends to be decidedly counterproductive – a pyrhric “victory†if it can be called that ….

Bullshit. Franc, no matter how hard he wishes, will never be a woman. His statement, therefore, that if he were a woman he'd kick Ophelia in hers is an expression of no real world significance; it cannot come to pass. I could say "if I were an alien with power to do so, I would come to Earth and pull PZ Meyers's stupid beard out, one hair at a time". What Ophelia hinted rather crudely at is that Mykeru would hit/shoot Becky Whatnot were he to find himself in front of her. That is an entirely possible situation and response, and is therefore an actionable libel/slander (whichever. whatever.).

Isn't the term 'go postal' all nasty and discriminatory and stuff? OK, once in a while someone at the local sorting office will express his frustrations with a 9mm, but is that any reason for the hard-working letter carriers of the US to be smeared by the use of this derogatory and shaming term? Opheliar may claim that it's an 'ambiguous colloquialism' or something but 'intent isn't magic'. That was apparently someone else, who just happened to get the information privately. Thus, Surly is free and clear of all guilt, since there was no way she made the information public. It works like abstinence only sex education. I have looked at this - prior to this hysteria, there were zero uses on my blog. Now it's unavoidable if you are discussing the baboons. Same with rape jokes. There has similarly been a corresponding rise in the incidence and the number of people that make them/laugh at them - of both genders. Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
I’ll concede there’s some difference in the degree of probability of the precursors – being a woman, being in the presence of “Râ€. But the latter case still looks to be hypothetical, suppositional or contingent, something that is emphasized by the subjunctive form of the verb “beâ€, i.e., “wereâ€. And according to Wikipedia:ConcentratedH2O, OM wrote:Bullshit. Franc, no matter how hard he wishes, will never be a woman. His statement, therefore, that if he were a woman he'd kick Ophelia in hers is an expression of no real world significance; it cannot come to pass. Looks to me to be rather a long distance from an assertion that an actual threat took place. But then again, I’m not a lawyer – how about you?In grammar, the subjunctive mood (abbreviated sjv or sbjv) is a verb mood typically used in subordinate clauses to express various states of unreality such as wish, emotion, possibility, judgment, opinion, necessity, or action that has not yet occurred.

People expect the world to become a safe space for them all the time. Ugh. The smartest thing you can learn in life I've found is to know when to engage and when to step back and - if necessary - use a proxy to mediate. I have a list of people at work who I cannot work with - they are fine at their jobs but we have an overwhelming personality clash which means I am unwilling to interact with them in any way. You just work around these issues and don't force them, otherwise you wind up with a lot of mess.

Somewhat related to that I happened to run across a post by Stef McGraw while following some of the ElevatorGate threads. She’s talking about Bill Maher’s “mock-umentaryâ€, Religulous:
Mutatis mutandis ….Stef McGraw wrote:While I won’t go too far into the details of the movie, I would just like to share one thought I kept having while watching: Bill Maher, in the words of Phil Plait, needs to be less of a dick.
It’s one thing to criticize or poke fun at religion, but it’s another to seemingly nit-pick unrelated characteristics of religious people and use them in making your case. One instance where Maher creates this straw man is when in the on-screen commentary, he makes fun of a word someone uses for the purpose of making the point that they are stupid. While this was funny when he did it to the Arkansas Senator, in the instance to which I’m referring, it was to someone for whom English was obviously not their first language. This, to me, is just “being a dick,†and doesn’t make any substantive point about religion.
He creates straw men again when he talks to gay muslims and makes them uncomfortable by talking about sex acts, when he makes up fake texts in the on-screen commentary that a muslim cleric is supposedly receiving, and in the documentary’s general style of intermittently cutting to funny clips during interviews.
Maher makes some good points, but when this movie is so laced with condescension and straw men, it loses a lot of its credibility. Being that I’m an atheist and I think this, I can only imagine what a theist or someone on the fence would think of his methods.
“One ringy-dingy. Two ringy-dingies. ….†[Martin & Rowan’s Laugh-In; Lily Tomlin] :-)Like me, they might just be pulling the one with bells on it.

Hey Phil. I know that you are watching. Have you ever thought of doing a tribute song to the Hartlepool Monkey, one of France's unsung heros?

Agreed – that “personal focus†tends to be somewhat problematic – notably due to escalation – even if I’m not always able to restrain myself ….KiwiInOz wrote:Actually, I agree with you. You mean, maybe sort of like … mob behaviour? ….
Paraphrasing Voltaire, "I may not (readily) agree with you taking the piss out of something (particulary if I'm the target), but I will defend to the death your right to do so." More or less in any case ….But I will assert my dog given right to take the piss, as and when necessary.

No. I'm saying this is LITERALLY how I talk. All the time. No, I don't modify.Steersman wrote:You mean your conversation is heavily laden with gratuitous racist and sexist and ableist insults? I certainly didn’t notice that – I think you might be incorrectly inferring that I thought so; my comments were general observations.rayshul wrote:This is literally how I talk in the real world.
And even if your conversation was or is so laden, I sort of suspect that you modify it depending on the circumstances and who you’re talking to … "when in Rome …."RESPEKT MAH CULTURE.
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
What some people say is horrifyingly offensive and riddled with insults is someone else's "inside voice".

That reminds me of the recorded message playing at high volume and frequency in the tomb of the popes under Vatican City - "Silenzio. This is a sacred space, blah blah blah".rayshul wrote:What some people say is horrifyingly offensive and riddled with insults is someone else's "inside voice".
Talk about needing an inside voice.

I just happened to have a mouthful of ginger beef and rice when I read that.rayshul wrote:Chill girls have the best vaginas.
Welp, not as if I do not know better. Got no one to blam but myself.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Can anyone fill in the details here.
I'm remembering the Surly Amy, Elevatorgate DMCA situation and have a question that keeps coming to mind.
OK, Amy DMCA'd the blogger 'Elevatorgate' for using some of her photos on her site - that is agreed.
He didn't find out about the claims for a week or so but when he did he counter-claimed.
I think this much is agreed by all.
The question is about what happened next.
As far as I can figure out, within one day of Elevatorgate's counterclaim a new twitter account was started ( @homervacula ) which clearly targeted two individuals, Justin Vacula and another individual who may be the real life identity of the anonymous Elevatorgate.
This is obviously doxxing.
But who doxxed him.
Surly Amy is an obvious suspect (she would have got his name as soon as he counter claimed)
But...
Surly Amy says she gave his name to a conference organizer - because she was worried about Elevatorgate being a physical threat to her if he turned up at that conference.
Well, if that is true (and let's assume it is true) it is interesting.
First it indicates that someone who was involved in organizing security to a skeptics conference is possibly guilty of doxxing - which is a form of harrassment in itself (isn't that the argument from Surly Amy herself about Justin Vacula's release of her own information?)
So who is the conference organizer who is guilty of doxxing.
Who exactly did Surly Amy inform about Elevatorgates real life identity?
There is a chain of individuals here, one of whom is guilty of doxxing and we all know doxxing is wrong, isn't it Amy?
And if the doxxer is involved in organizing conference security should we not be even more concerned?
If Amy really wants to do something about protecting people from harrassment then she should work to expose this abuse of the conference security system (I have no problem with Elevatorgate possibly being banned from the conference if evidence of harrassment is determined - but why should his name be publicly exposed, especially when it is linked to an unrelated individual, Justing Vacula, who is also being mocked.)
So, who is the conference security individual to whom Amy provided Elevatorgate's name? :?

This story remind me of the Librarian in The Science of Discworld: The Globe, where he's passed as a Portuguese (and of course it works)...
Aaaaahhh, stereotypes.
BTW, I find the FC(n) attitude towards me has been less than charitable in the past. I can feel the Francophobia. Fucking xenophobes!
