Of course there were, but I didn't screencap in time. Ophelia comes up with one excuse about being called "irrational", hence her banhammer. Interestingly, some posters a bit later are admitting the Alexa reference is right, but.......can't be used as an accurate measure. I'm sure FTB will release the information about gender/visits in true time, and I'm betting that more men visit it!!!

Caine got caught out there, didn't he!

Security. They have created this safe little 'space' for themselves, and nothing must intrude. They feel secure by controlling your thoughts.

Wouldn't that be considered insanely sexist if not outright misogynist if anyone else said it?
Sexism seems to require some stereotyping and discrimination. I think that simply acknowledging that there are, or have been, some, many actually, top “lady-scientists” – e.g., Emmy Noether [“groundbreaking contributions to abstract algebra and theoretical physics”], Hypatia of Alexandria [“credited with various inventions including a hydrometer (and) an astrolabe”], Marie Skłodowska-Curie [“Nobel prize in 1903 (physics)”], and Barbara McClintock [studies of maize genetics led to “Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983”] – hardly qualifies as such.
[/spoiler]
Bull. Shit.
Those women are scientists and mathematicians, first and foremost. They are important because of their fucking contributions, not because they have chochas.
English a second language for you? Because I fail to see how you could get that I was arguing that “they are important for having chochas”. My list was designed to illustrate that there are a great many women who have made significant contributions in both science and mathematics - "lady scientists" - so that it would be perfectly reasonable for Amy to have asked which one might be an exemplary role model for those women who were applying for “Surly’s Woman’s Grant” and entirely consistent with her objective of “helping women to participate in Science and Rationalism – one woman at a time”. Not far removed from the same objectives and recommendations promoted by the American Association of University Women [AAUW].
Yes, little bitch, English is -as a matter of fact- my second language.

I think Harriet Hall said it better:
http://thunderf00tdotorg.files.wordpres ... .jpg?w=590

Your illustration of why Amy's stupid ass question (requests of "lady-science" examples) is "not sexist" is what they usually call a benevolent prejudice [i.e. scientists are men by default, so let specify that these other scientists belong to a different class of scientist, a "more specialer" kind because of their female condition]. Those "ladies" that you mentioned on your little list are scientists that happened to be women; not "lady-scientists". Do you get it now or should I write it in Spanish, cabrón?
Really. Shut the fuck up.
Up yours. Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning? Or do you just normally let your spleen get the better of your brain? Stupid cunt.

You do realize "florida" like every other place is not geographically homogenous?

I'll put the quality of the water from the spring under tallahassee against anyone's.
No, I had no fucking idea that Florida wasn't geographically homogeneous. Thanks for enlightening me though!

Snarkiness aside, Tallahassee happens to have good water. How are the bagels and Pizza there, compared to say Pensacola or Miami?

Anyway my point is that in regards to bread products the water used makes a big impact on the quality of the bread.

btw I used to live in Florida (North Miami Beach). I also happen to know as bit or two about groundwater hydrology. I never did get that job at the EPA in public management though. So even though I was trained in that area I've actually never worked in any science or environmental job ever. Just a computer IT/MIS geek and now a stay at home dad.
the bagels here are as good as the skills of the people who make them. I've had shitty bagels in NYC, I've had awesome bagels in miami. what, it was the water? Doubtful. A skilled maker of bagels will make good bagels even with fairly suboptimal water. A shitty bagel maker will make shitty bagels with perfect ingredients.

Strongly bad tasting water will affect any food that has that water in it. I can tell when the ice cubes in my Coke are too chlorinated or have residual sulfur from the environment. Of course, enough spice or strong flavor can hide some of the defect, but if there is a lot of water and not enough flavor, it won't fully do the job.

I fail to understand how this could really affect a decent food service business though, as extra water filtration, if needed, is cheap as hell these days and widely available, and even the crappiest local tap water can be easily treated to the point that it tastes like clean mountain spring water, unless the shop owners are just cheap bastards.

As far as bagels specifically, the "water issue" seems to be an urban legend to promote a myth of NY food superiority, as far as I can find with google. Such claims are quite common in the food industry, and in most cases are as stupid as they are common.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. :-)

And for the “heads-up”, although I only see one reference to me there by one Raging Bee – about whom Welch had some choice words – probably because she and I have had some “words” over Shermer in the context of Brayton’s rather sorry attempt to refute the charge that FfTB has turned into an “Atheist Cult”.

However, I wonder about Shermer’s “slips of the tongue” as I really don’t think, as I argued with RB, that his statement – “it’s more of a guy thing” – can at all be construed as sexist. But I might try addressing RB on Ophelia’s site, although that might be tricky as she’s banned me there some time ago and even if I sneak one in under the radar I expect it would be shot down pretty quickly ….

Idealised bodies are nothing new in the arts and don't necessarily imply sexual undertones. The null-hypothesis is the western aesthetic canon, not pornography.

Your unconvincing argument has been unsuccessfully deployed many times over the millennia - by prudes - in order to censor works of the stature of the Venus of Milo and Michaelangelo's David. It succeed during the Counter-Reformation against Michaelangelo's Final Judgement. Unsurprisingly, it is hosted inside the Vatican. One Braghettone was called in to restore decency and decor.

I realise that we're talking about completely different levels of artistic inspiration and proficiency, however it requires supernatural mindreading powers on your part to prove pornographic intent where sexual act isn't remotely suggested.

I'm not necessarily keen on taking PZ's side on that statue, but I will say that I can't imagine anyone with any taste whatsoever having that. The thing has been nearly universally ridiculed or responded to with a "WTF is this shit?" style response on every gaming site/blog I've seen mention and show it. Just to draw a comparison, I myself loved the movie Devil's Rejects, and laughed quite hard when the woman wearing the mask made of her husband's face got pancaked across the road by the semi, but I don't think I'd want a replica of the scene sitting as a decoration in my house. That'd be a total "WTF?"

The general response I've seen to this Dead Island thing leads me to believe they'll rethink selling that statue with the game rather soon.

Usually with these collectors items they're depicting either a hero or an enemy in the game. Maybe Dead Islands protagonist is a just a bloody female torso, ever think of that?

The funny part is that they have used the same "meme" before. When Eucliwood commented on Taslima's post about rape, several commenters accused her of ... wait for it ... not being a real woman. It wouldn't surprise me if other female commenters have been accused of the same thing as well.

That's absolutely fine. It doesn't follow that the artist should be condemned and/or his work censured on account of your taste and mob precious feelings.

I'm not into the Zombie culture at all, so I can even judge the relative merits of such prop. But when I look at it, it's just a piece of kitsch or pop art like countless other (perhaps even more inspired, given the wink to Venus).

So, fuck my taste and fuck yours.

I can understand disliking that statue. Actually it's not something I would use to decorate my house, and I love Zombie movies, books and games. It's because of the gore factor, because I don't want a dismembered bloody torso around (female OR male), not because I think it's a symptom of some kind of "toxic sexism" like one of PZ's commenters asserted.

Some people will disagree, but since it's a matter of taste, I don't think the statue can be defined as objectively misogynist and the people who like it condemned as woman-haters.

Bear in mind, something potentially offensive like that statue will generate free publicity, which is what the gaming company could be angling for.

Some commenters on the disingenuous, cowardly prune's piece call Shermer a 'climate-change denier'. That's another blatant lie. It appears that he was at one time a sceptic of anthropogenic climate change, but he changed his mind about that years ago:

Dissenting comments must be censored, but lies can be propagated freely on the disingenuous, cowardly prune's blog.

Coming from a baby claiming s/he's too good to have a reasonable discussion so s/he'll insult me instead, that's actually pretty funny. But you are playing right out of the baboon playbook. 1. Attack the person rather than the argument. 2. Claim superiority in order to dismiss the argument when called on the ad homs in 1. 3. make accusations of my emotional state when 1 and 2 fail to work. Next we'll see you playing the victim, and flouncing because I'm supposedly not being reasonable. I responded to you. If you didn't like that response, you should have ignored it. But the ad hom and "I'm too good to bother with your response" bullshit is just that, shit. So when you want to stop flinging it like a baboon and respond to what I wrote with something other than attacks, I'll be here. But I suspect you're to full of yourself not to double down at this point.

Goddamn, Shermer was talking about the reality of climate change just a week or two ago on the Thinking Atheist podcast, and that's not the first time he's talked about it on that podcast in the last year or two. They are really stretching now to try and find some nail to hit him with.

Yeah. I'm seeing this attitude a lot.

Also, I'm seeing the argument that my petition may lose on the numbers and therefore be invalid. It's not expected to win on the numbers compared to Adam Lee's. The goal is only 100.

The point is that they have a organised blog network which draws in the crowd of their little followers. If you bring their followers in and say "Hey, anyone wanna sign this petition... just wanted to make sure it got coverage so they can't argue that it was a good argument later if they lose!" All the followers would go "Nah. Don't want to sign."

FtB / Skepchick used to be mini-Meccas for skeptics and then they deteriorated. Ones who have left have left and aren't interested in coming back. They'll not sign my petition because they no longer follow those sites. The ones who have stayed agreed with the FtBers wholeheartedly so they'll not sign.

I have like 3 followers on my blog and 40 odd on Twitter (now 70 because Richard Dawkins re-tweeted me and that apparently brings more followers). If we want to have the number fight, we can look at Thunderf00t's likes on Youtube versus Adam Lee's petition. That's where the numbers are.

It will also exclude all the people who don't want Ftb / Skepchick to get better but just 'piss off'. I doubt a few of the bigger names in the Pit would've signed it because (for good reason) they don't think there's much of a point.

It would be awesome if we 'win' on the numbers but I wouldn't expect it.

My petition is that there is at least as many people who have signed it agree with that message, so maybe - just maybe - there is something to it and they should turn their critical thinking skills on some of the accepted ideas and behaviours at FtB / Skepchick and see where that takes them.

When these same self-described secular feminists went after Sam Harris for a commentary supporting racial profiling in the search for terrorists, again I didn’t speak out. When Harris wrote, “If my daughter one day reads in my obituary that her father ‘was persistently dogged by charges of racism and bigotry,’ unscrupulous people like P.Z. Myers will be to blame,” I thought to myself: “Don’t worry about it, Sam. Your work is for the ages. PZ Myers’s work is for the minutes—the half-life measure of blogs relative to books.”
Zing! Hahahaha.
Oh, that was just too perfect! I just read Shermer's article and it is remarkably open and fair. That OB could take that and twist it to her own ends is pretty fucking sick. I have no doubt that Peezus doesn't give a rat's ass about what Harris' kids think of their father, but that line has just GOT to hurt. Better yet, it is ultimately true.

I don't want to criticize unfairly, but personal tastes for gore in art and entertainment vary widely, and generally don't tell you much about the person in any other way. In the comic book and gamer niches, especially where those cross over with horror movie culture, this kind of thing isn't that uncommon, with and without any sexualization. And it's no really big deal, or sign about a person's character or even their tastes in other genres. Hell, my girlfriend would probably love it. She loves the penis-devouring scene in "Piranha", yet somehow, has managed to get through life without pulling a Bobbit on anyone. Personally, I think the reason that such images are often sexualized to some degree, has nothing to do with any kind of sexism or evil wishes for women...it's there because it shatters expectations, puts incongruous images together, and makes the effect even more dreadful and shocking. It has nothing at all to do with the fictional "victim". Of course, this is all overlooked by SJW's looking for offense. If the victim is objectified, that's BAD. If the victim is ignored and used only as a prop for a greater effect, then they're being marginalized and co-opted, and that's BAD. And of course, the actual effect if any that it has on people, the artist's intentions, the reasons why people enjoy it....couldn't matter less to SJW's and their conservative moralist counterparts. JUST BAN IT ALREADY, IT MAKES ME UNCOMFORTABLE BUT I CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO IGNORE IT!!!!!

Sometimes I'd love to see the reaction if the tables were turned. Imagine the anger from women (not necessarily feminists) if men started complaining about wedding conventions targeting and largely being populated by women, and claiming men are being discriminated against... then using that anger as "proof" the accusation was true. But I just can't use that kind of logic with a good conscience.

The thing is that simply stating some fact about the relative distributions of various attributes amongst the population of men and women simply does not qualify as being sexist. Is stating that men are, on average, larger than women being sexist? How about that there are more men in prison than women for violent crimes? That men “have a much stronger taste for no-strings sex with multiple or anonymous partners, as we see in the almost all-male consumer base for prostitution and visual pornography”? You might want to take a look at this chapter of Pinker’s for corroboration and additional details.

Actually, you're messing with an Asian tradition there. Not only in China, but also in Japan, the wife gets the husband's earnings and she gives him an allowance. This is the only way they can keep the men from blowing it all at the hostess bars.

I’m glad to hear that Shermer is a climate-change denier. It helps me to know that his inability to deal with reality is general.
You must be hearing voices and you know nothing. But it is nice to see how prejudice works in feeble brains.

Another commenter talks about the 'pits "obsessive photoshopping of obscene images of Ophelia, P.Z. et al (well, not Al anymore; he’s over there now)" and the "creation of fake accounts in the name of Ophelia and Rebecca". There is no evidence that the latter was done by 'pitters, and as far as I can remember, I have never seen 'obscene images' of Ophelia or PZ here.

OB's blog is a cesspool of lies.
