So. Avicenna has a post up about his take on the conflict in atheism. Some bits that caught my eye:

The nay sayers have claimed that what they do is not harassment but parody. That it is an expression of free speech. I suggest they go read about all the kids who have killed themselves because they too were subject to such “parody”. It’s bullying. It’s simple as that.

Well, some specific examples would be nice, Avi. Or is it a the concept of parody itself you have a problem with? In which case, one may as well go full Peez, and declare that blood is also on the hands of The Onion, Private Eye, Mad magazine, pretty much any newspaper cartoonist you'd care to mention, and so on and so forth. Or maybe it's just parody directed at your FTB buddies which you think, for some reason, is exceptionally wrongheaded. Like such targets of parody do, whatever their sphere - be it atheism, religion, politics or showbiz - when they take themselves ever so seriously and have ego issues.

And besides - all those societies where parody was seen as being dangerous enough to be banned, curtailed or put under state control have generally been paragons of freedom, equality and justice...right?

Free Speech is great, but how you use it is an insight into the kind of society you wish to build. You can use it to bring down tyrants and you can use it to do things like spread transphobic hate (witnessed from the anti-stance). You can use it to defame and harass and you can use it to deny things that are patently sensible.I ran into the entity known as the Slymepit in one specific article. A Voice for Men ran an article from an Indian MRA. The best case scenario was that the man who wrote it was highly delusional. The worst case scenario is that he was a rape apologist which is no surprise since India post the Delhi Rape/Murder played host to an ever increasing dialogue of such. What surprised me was the level of support AVfM had from the Slymepit. For all the vaunted “free speech” championed by people who say that we are the ones ruining atheism not one of them seemed to be vocal against their own members who were sponsoring rape apologists with nary a word.

LMFAO - so you're saying what, exactly? That a cursory glance at the pit indicated, to you, some support for AVFM? Guess you weren't around to see AVFM being taken to task by a good number of pitters for its 'featured offenders' list, eh? I mean, if you're going to insinuate that this place is an MRA hive - and why not, considering a lot of your fellow FTBers do - on the basis of a fleeting examination, when why not go the whole hog with such rarefied freethinking skillz and suggest that any number of UFO photos aren't faked because, wow, they sure do gosh darn look like real alien spaceships!

Hell, I've read a good bit of the archive stuff on AVFM, and I would appreciate it if the critics could even bother to respond to what is actually written, and the perspectives put forth, or maybe even engage with some of the arguments about female privilege, social expectations, and male disposability without just looking to score cheap points.

So far, you are the only person I've seen, here, there, or anywhere, that at least actually addressed reality instead of just point-blank making shit up. To claim there is any real support here for MRA's is just a big load of shit. Lack of censorship is not support, except to the
SJW's, apparently. And they wonder why some people occasionally compare their tactics to those of oppressive regimes. They think they have an absolute moral high ground, and feel "called" to silence all other voices, with plenty of lies, if necessary.

There's support, I think, for the things MRAs support which make some sense. Better equality in sentencing for the same crime would be one. Less discrimination in family courts. These are all sensible things which anyone of sense should be behind.

Does that mean I now have an "MRA" tattoo on my ass? No, of course not, any more than the fact that I support feminist issues which seem eminently reasonable and sensible means i'm a fucking radfem.

But in this world of "ALL OR NOTHING", I guess I am now both a Radfem AND an MRA. Boy, that's going to be awkward if I wear the wrong t-shirt to the meetings.

Well, complete bullshit maybe a bit too strong. At any rate, this article levels a very strong criticism again some common claims that are associated with IQ research.

A problem with arguments like Shalizi's that try to discredit indirect causal inference in IQ research is that they prove a little too much. For example, a comment on the Glymour paper that Shalizi wants to push "extra hard", from N. Sesardic, "Making Sense of Heritability":

In a similar attack that hits the intended target only by causing collateral

Yep. That's what I would have assumed, if I'd even noticed (unlikely - I don't usually notice what people are wearing, unless the item(s) appear to be handknit). Multiple identical T-shirts, or wash one T-shirt in the sink, or perhaps with deodorants and daily showers and a climate-controlled environment indoors, people don't smell even if they wear the same T-shirt 3 days in a row.

I try to tell myself it wasn't a complete waste of time. I did learn a bit about structural engineering and aircraft on my way. But, fuck-it. I got into an argument with some guy who just wouldn't accept that a plane hit the pentagon. Photographic evidence didn't help.

Even pointing out to troofers that there were dozens of eye witnesses who saw the PLANE hit the Pentagon, they just won't accept it, saying they mistook it for a "missile", or that "they are in on the conspiracy as well". You have to remember that, like devout religious people, they have invested quite heavily in their belief system, and they just ain't ready to accept it is "game over" that easily. The pretence has to continue. Even if the justifications and "get outs" become more insane - hence the usual "get out" that everyone else is simply in on the conspiracy as well.

There's already some, er, interesting comments. I did find the pretentious fluff trying to get people to use QUILTBAG as the new magic talisman of power pretty funny (that assumes I read correctly - it was a bit tl:dr to me so I skimmed). To be fair (I find myself saying this a lot on this board), Greta is bisexual. For now she's with a woman. If they were to split up, she could be with a man. However, that being said, I think at this point in her life, bearing children is out of the question anyway.

Yes. I know that having that removed (or a breast) is still devastating. The issue is then being realistic. A neighbor I had not too long ago had a mastectomy. She is still in the "child bearing years". However, she's realized that it's a body part. She'll do what she needs and move on. It would seem to me that Greta would realize that the part of her body removed means as much as tonsils or an appendix at this point in life (at 46, I've come to the same conclusion should I have to have a hysterectomy - a very real possibility given my past issues).

I seriously doubt these things would cause me to shut down and not be able to enjoy life (which is how Greta is purporting things at this point).

I don't get to read or participate here as much as required for a forum that moves at Mach 1. I saw all these goings on about a hysterectomy and this post allowed me to do the right math. Any surgery can be concerning, frightening and cause anxiety, due to potential complications, recovery time, etc. But if you have to give up a body part and you are a woman over 40 a uterus is one of the best options - the others being tonsils, appendix, spleen and gallbladder. None leave your appearance changed (at least with clothes on) and none prevent an excellent quality of life. Using the SILS technique, http://www.sils.com/hysterectomy/pages.aspx?page=Home, a hysterectomy needs only one incision, made through the belly button. Once healed it is unnoticeable. Perhaps someone with goodwill might pass that on to interested parties.

PZ's book is the Duke Nukem Forever of pour generation: a bunch of vaporware for about 6 years, done and redone many times, and when the final product finally hit the shelves, it will be a piece of shit.

I mentioned this on Twitter the other day and I'm actually quite serious. I have a server with oodles of space (plus the ability to upgrade easily). Many of us are tired of FTB, Skepchicks, A+ and the like. I'd be more than happy to set up and run a blog conglomerate if enough people were interested. I'm fairly adept in SEO, server admin, and many other areas within running such things. If I find at least 10 people are interested, I'll look into setting things up.

I blogged for years about many things including science (layman's level but still), religion, allsorts of crap. Count me as a volunteer.

A problem with arguments like Shalizi's that try to discredit indirect causal inference in IQ research is that they prove a little too much. For example, a comment on the Glymour paper that Shalizi wants to push "extra hard", from N. Sesardic, "Making Sense of Heritability":

This is like a red flag to a bull for some people. Even though I would hazard a guess that he belongs to the “analytic” style, I seriously doubt that is going to cut much slack from certain people.

(Thanks for the link though Windy, I usually pay little or no attention to philosophy, even though in the past it does appear to have had significant impact on societys in general, and not always in a beneficial manner).
