I like how Carrier makes a point that Tucker is a prominent scholar in exactly the shit Dick was writing about, but he never saw it. He totally swears he never saw it. Really, he absolutely never saw his work.Apples wrote:So it turns out that Carrier's argument in Proving History was already made a decade ago by a better and more-established scholar in a book that Carrier failed to notice because "it must not have been indexed well in databases." A reader had to point it out (b/c Carrier's version of 'peer-review' is having Josh the Spokesgay and the executor of Madalyn Murray O'Hair's estate approve his font-choices), and even though Carrier's book turns out to have been redundant and superficial compared to Tucker's efforts and it is shameful to have failed to cite it, Carrier feels free to say of Tucker's work that "his book is essentially an extension of my sixth chapter."Tony Parsehole wrote:I guarantee Carrier masturbates whilst looking in the mirror.BarnOwl wrote:http://freethoughtblogs.com/carrier/archives/3923/

I like your work. Regarding the following critique, I'm mainly perusing the 'portraits' section.bovarchist wrote:
I'm almost afraid to ask, but what do you think of the work I do? http://www.vanden-eykel.com/photography/
Overall-
Strengths:
-You're very good at using extreme light/dark contrasts. Typical portraits are 2:1 or 3:1, but you often crank it up to 11 for effect. It looks 'on-purpose' and artistic, rather than a shitty camera on auto-expose in mixed lighting conditions. See good examples: 'Serious' and 'Cowboy'
-Typically very good at leaving 'leading room' for where the action is heading (or where the person is looking). See: 'Little Cowboy' 'Metro Overpass'
- Very good use of balance (both symmetrical and asymmetrical) - 'Sunburning Man', 'Mirror', 'Down...'
- Consistently good focus / exposure.
- Competent use of the basics - rule of thirds, framing, leading lines. It's clear that generally when you're 'breaking the rules' that it's intentional (gotta know the rule to break it - as they said over and over in school.)
Improvements:
- For a forward facing portrait the general rule is to show at least 'two eyes and an ear'. Don't crop off their heads like 'Baby' 'Father' 'Hungry' and 'Smile'
- I probably would have cropped most of them *slightly* differently, to avoid chopping limbs/fingers/scalps. It's a tricky thing, but there are certain parts of the body that are more visually acceptable for cropping. Too hard to explain in text - something you have to see - probably side by side. Point is, there are better sweet spots to crop people.
- Saw one example of you not leaving room for the action - 'Maria Bamford'. She's facing left, yet you give her a whole lot of space to the right. Otherwise, you're very good at this concept.
I'd hire you for portraits, and also for sporting events / concerts / cultural events. I imagine you'd make decent money at wedding / baby / family / pregnant 'baby bump' photos. However, you seem to prefer the artistic side. Hope this helped.

More hypocrisy from Zvan
From June 24 blog post "Watching and Waiting" by Stephanie Zvan concerning A.J. Johnson's complaint of wrongful termination and racial discrimination:
I will highlight what she says in this post compared to her attitudes on women making complaints of sexual harassment and claims that conferences are unsafe/hostile places for women:
Shut up and listen to the women...but only some women.
I will highlight what she says in this post compared to her attitudes on women making complaints of sexual harassment and claims that conferences are unsafe/hostile places for women:
But yet, without any evidence, and maybe mere personal testimony, we can just jump to conclusions about sexual harassment and conferences being unsafe/hostile.Sometimes you come across things that shouldn’t be ignored but about which very little can reliably be known. AJ Johnson’s lawsuit against American Atheists, along with American Atheists’ response is one of those things. So I put this here to observe the occasion. I can’t speculate about any of it without being irresponsible.
But yet we shouldn't expect people to produce evidence when making specific claims of sexual harassment or that conferences are unsafe and hostile toward women. People need to "shut up and listen" and disagreement/skepticism is "invalidating experiences of women," "saying women are liars," and "mistrust of women." Random person x who says she has been sexually harassed should be believed simply because she says so, but A.J.'s lawsuit...well, we should just "watch and wait" while we "object to people drawing conclusions..."All I can do with regard to this lawsuit is watch and wait, continue to pay attention as the case goes through discovery and litigation (or settlement), object to people drawing conclusions without facts or that are unwarranted by the facts, and know that no outcome will make me wholly happy.
Shut up and listen to the women...but only some women.

As you said, she was criticised not for suggesting bilingual flyers, but for suggesting people should include on sentence of Spanish within their usual flyers in order to attract hispanics. The original tweets smacked of tokenism. That's what drew the criticism.
Nobody complained about having bilingual flyers - she didn't mention that term.
Now she tries to pretend that she did.
Listen, Jenny from the blog, one sentence is not bilingual flyers.
'Bilingual flyers' mean all of the text is in both languages.
Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
Unless they have some spanish speakers at the event in question, I don't see the point of it. If they came to listen to the speakers it's safe to assume that regardless of origin they would have a pretty good grasp of the english language, at least enough to read a flyer. If they can't even read a sentence on a flyer the entire thing would probably be boring and pointless. Unless of course they have a dedicated translator interpreting everything, but I don't think Hensley has anything like that planned. Seems more like an opportunity to display how open-minded and tolerant she is than an actual effort to diversify the conference with more latinos. It might blow her mind but the vast majority of hispanic immigrants are usually quite fluent in both english and their maternal language.codelette wrote:So now we went from "one sentence" to "bilingual"

I personally think the lack of latinos in atheist organizations has more to do with the fact that the vast majority are explicitly religious than some sort of chill-out effect by a nebulous racist white supremacist undercurrent in atheism. I don't think she is very much familiar at all with how important traditional christian ethics are to many latinos.

Non-inclusive list:
Loved Dusty the cat in "animals", because it took a minute to figure out what that grey bit of fluff was until I noticed his eye :)
Marvin and the waitress in "portraits" look like interesting people. Bit jealous you got to see Colbert live.
The Phoenix Cross picture in "remnants" is particularly appealing. Bit of irony with a phoenix, but it makes me think of old, small, wild graveyards which I always find completely captivating. Weathered gravestones+wild flowers and unkempt trees and grasses=yum.
So many good ones in "other", God Face, Closing Ceremonies, Emerald Lake Boats, Moody Park Clock, Forgotten, Apples I like because of the one jarringly askew.
Won't even try to pick favorites from "Panoramas", so many are stunners.
Glad you posted the link. Lots of pretty to come home from work and see

Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
That and the fact that rest of us (I consider myself more of an Agnostic, as explained by Neil De Grasse); don't really give a shit about congregating with other Atheists/Agnostics. My husband is a very outspoken Atheist and even him don't see to give a shit about getting to formal atheist cons. Also, like you mentioned, the fact that a lot of Latinos are very religious keeps a lot of us underground. All of my family believe in the concept of God and I prefer for my family gatherings to be about food, love for family and enjoying each other than going into debates about the existence/non-existence of a deity.LurkerPerson wrote:Unless they have some spanish speakers at the event in question, I don't see the point of it. A+ are extremely sexist and racist. I started to list some examples then realised a casual glance will see that in seconds. This is what Carrier must mean when he talks about 'Social Justice' and is one reason I am fighting these clowns as I find them deeply offensive and as bad as all extremists including fascists. They represent everything they claim to hate and need to be called out on it. As people often suffer personal consequences in doing so they need support to ensure their voices are not silenced.LurkerPerson wrote:Not that this is unbelievable to me (after having seen some of the debates and arguements from FTB, very believable), but do you have a source where that was the consensus in a similar situation?Tony Parsehole wrote: It's obvious from his words how much genuine contempt he has for women. Sometimes such comments leak into FtB blogs and FtB comments pages and they are never called on. Of course they have stolen their simplistic social philosophy as a cover but racism and sexism is what it is, they don't get to redefine to suit their own bigotry. Their pretence at 'conscience' is just a delusion they need to keep pushing to justify their behaviour. That's why people like Zvan and PMZ love to give an air of moral righteousness. It is why they seem sickly sweet and entirely insincere to the rest of us. But when you go by what people do, how they respond and behave they are nasty demagogues and control freaks. They slander, vilify, abuse and exploit people for their own ends. They do not give a stuff who they hurt.

I stand by my original point: dropping one sentence of Spanish onto a poster when providing absolutely no language services or doing any kind interest/issue out-reach is patronizing. Especially in light of the complete white-bread nature of what they were doing.
This kind of behavior, in my social circle, seen as racism. That she's blind to it... Well, feminists have a long history of racism, race-baiting and racial tone-deafness to race issues within their movement. Gender feminism (as opposed to equity feminism) is, and remains to this day, pretty much an upper-middle-class whiny white-girl movement that treats minorities as they claim men treat them.
And that's no matter how many times non-white feminists blow up about it: http://dearwhitefeminists.wordpress.com/

My younger daughter's boyfriend is Hispanic Californian, ethnically a Mestizo. He's also an atheist and, somehow, his family figured it out and he's now considered worthless, untrustworthy and is a fair target for abuse and exploitation. He gets more crap than you can shake a stick at and they have, pretty much, disowned him, except when they need to do things for them.codelette wrote:

Also, like you mentioned, the fact that a lot of Latinos are very religious keeps a lot of us underground. All of my family believe in the concept of God and I prefer for my family gatherings to be about food, love for family and enjoying each other than going into debates about the existence/non-existence of a deity.
My lack of giving a shit about the concept of God is more align with Homer's views (when he decided that it was way more awesome to stay home than go to church).

Regardless of how one parses Lindsay's apology, he has opened himself up to being seen as weak, as not willing to tough it out and stand by his words, and therefore ripe for future picking. By caving in (even partially) to shrieking bullies, Lindsay has potentially put himself into the position of being viewed as their puppet. That is not the image one wants to project as the head of a major organization devoted to critical thinking and the intellectual independence that the concept of skepticism is critically bound to.treestump wrote:When you give in to bullies once and give them your lunch money, they don't go away; they keep coming back to demand more and more every day, and if you don't give in to them, they'll flush your head down a toilet pan or beat you up (or Zvan will squash you like a flea). Even if all he did was apologize for hurt fee fees and not for what he actually said, the propaganda spinners are already making it clear (Greta's list of demands for example) that they consider Lindsay their bitch now.
All Lindsay has accomplished is to make himself look weak, vulnerable, and a tool of the FTBullies.

*pitter women are those chill girls of white, black, asian, Hispanic and other mixed race/ethnicities/nationalities. their opinions do not count cause they post at a certain indecent forum.

Thanks, it does!Parody Accountant wrote:I like your work.
I've never taken any courses, so I'm feeling my way based solely on a personal esthetic, and bits and pieces that I pick up online, so it's nice to know that my instincts are good. I'd never heard the 'two eyes one ear' rule, so I'll keep that in mind.
With Maria Bamford, you're not wrong, but I was taking the shots for the club owner and I thought he'd appreciate having the club name be visible.
I doubt I'd do well at weddings though...too formal and too much pressure to capture peoples' 'special day' for this misanthrope to handle. Panoramic landscapes are where my heart is. :)

What is the rational for having a WIS3? Is this a major mission of CFI? And is there a severe problem with respect to women in the movement that is so acute, and the solutions so elusive, that it need to be revisited in a national conference setting year after year?Remick wrote:It matters zero fucks what it LOOKS like until we see something that actually matters, like a Melody promotion or the line up of speakers for Wis3.Gumby wrote:... Seems to me that, to the extent there are issues specific to women, it is part of the general problem (and the general goal) of increasing the participation of many groups that are currently underrepresented. General strategies with respect to outreach, accommodating special needs, making the things more "welcoming", understanding different "perspectives", increasing awareness of ingrained prejudices and biases, etc would be related to those for increasing participation of people from different ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
And of course, while addressing these issues, one always has to keep an eye on the mission of the organization, which is to promote skepticism in society at large: lose sight of that goal and everything becomes pointless.
