Hmmm. On second thoughts, here is another reason. A much more compelling one for me.

Let us suppose that I would benefit from reading the views of a person. But that person, for whatever reason is discouraged from posting at the Slymepit because of NSFW images.

Then I would care. I would care very much. I would want people to stop posting NSFW images.
This is why some people might get fustrated with me. Because I might agree, but not in a way that is in alignment with whatever the view may be.

You are so right. :) The Nugent threads are the like the first Gulf War. You go in expecting the Republican Guard wielding nerve gas and end up with a turkey shoot resulting in the Highway of Death. The FTBers are hopeless and helpless in the field.

That was awesome - thanks for posting it!

I read some good news today regarding cancer treatment research. Years ago, as a postdoc, I developed and characterized a genetically engineered mouse model (GEMM) for an aggressive form of inherited cancer. It typically affects people who have the cancer syndrome when they're in their teens, or as young adults, and it is nearly impossible to treat effectively. Doesn't respond well to chemotherapy or radiotherapy (and the patient has a high risk of developing a secondary malignancy as a result of the treatment), and very difficult to remove completely with surgery. Over the years, with a number of collaborators, we used the GEMM to identify genes that might provide therapeutic targets. My lab looked at the genomic instability of the tumors, and of tissues that might develop secondary malignancies following radio- or chemotherapy to treat the primary tumor.

Well, today a friend sent me a link to a paper indicating that my postdoc mentor's current lab group has cured the tumors in the GEMM, with both genetic and pharmacological approaches. Cured them. Gone! Their next step is a clinical trial in humans who have this type of cancer, with the pharmacologic agent. Go SCIENCE!!!!

Wait ... EBW says http://www.michaelnugent.com/2013/03/07 ... ent-197559
The point seems to be overlooked that these are not generic pornographic pictures. These were placed there with the specific intent to demean and degrade certain named women.

Sooooo ... as far as I can tell... she is now in agreement that these things are not misogyny, not being attacks upon all women, but being attacks on a individual ... like for example calling EBW a two-faced hypocritical lying little cunt.

When I go to a gig I take note of how many strings the bassist has. Four strings, great, he's probably going to be ok. Five strings, possibly ok, but more likely we're going to get a fucking awful bass solo. Once you get to six strings and over, you're pretty much guaranteed that he's going to emerge from the shadow of the other musicians and show us exactly what he can do when not being held back by the others, prepare to be amazed. Or not. In other words get ready to head for the bar when this arsehole steps forward.

Actually, I believe it means he has confused you with Sally Strange.

@franc,
I could be wrong but I do not think that this is Sally Strange. Cut her some slack.

You may want to register so people don't get to impersonate you.

Also, we've always been decent human beings but you've obviously only started reading since Nugent. Which, if you wanted to have some confirmation bias, would have appeared like we changed.

An apology to Skepsheik would make Atheist Ireland not hypocrites. No wonder spokesgay and aratina can't understand this.
Aratina can't understand anything.

Meanwhile, I heard some talk that this may be a progressives versus libertarian issue in the atheist movement (on Oklahoma Atheists podcast from Sept 2012). I just want to make clear that I am a progressive AND FTB IS STILL MUTHERFUGGING CRAZY.

What's hilarious about that is that Miriam (or "Miri, the Professional Fun-Ruiner") made a post about advice to feminist men, where one of the points were, "Do not lecture women about their own oppression."

He flew there, found a guide with a canoe to take him up the river to the remote

The guide turned to him and said "Drums OK, but VERY BAD when they stop."
Then, after some hours, the drums suddenly stopped! This hit the

stopped, what happens now?"
The guide crouched down, covered his head with his hands and said, "Bass

When I go to a gig I take note of how many strings the bassist has. Four strings, great, he's probably going to be ok. Five strings, possibly ok, but more likely we're going to get a fucking awful bass solo. Once you get to six strings and over, you're pretty much guaranteed that he's going to emerge from the shadow of the other musicians and show us exactly what he can do when not being held back by the others, prepare to be amazed. Or not. In other words get ready to head for the bar when this arsehole steps forward.

Ouch!

They do seem rather clueless – a couple of ignorant dickheads. Why should they be thinking that AI/Walsh should be apologizing to Benson and Myers? Presumably AI was apologizing to Skepsheik for some sexist and racist language directed his way by AI – how does that translate into some insult to Myers and Benson?

Don't go bad mouthing bass solos. I (hazily) remember them being quite interesting when I followed this guy around in college.

For the record so do I. This is an example of genuine harassment in my opinion. If she makes hay out of it I would not blame her one bit.

In one of my posts I opened with the statement that he was not only feeding the troll but in his eagerness to score points publicising something distasteful. At that time I did not know if he had Benson's permission to do so but if he did not his behaviour is reprehensible.

Yep - no excuse for my shooting first and then asking questions/continuing to read the thread. Apologies to Sally/Strange and all onlookers. I really do appreciate the 'Pit's general scrupulousness (nothwithstanding the propaganda from detractors) and w to maintain the standard.

It also got him out of a few holes, one being answering questions about morals.

Right but it ended up making him look dishonest. I stopped reading at that point. The more honest thing to do would have been to add it to his list of things he already thinks are wrong with the 'pit, "Here is number 51," and then actually address the questions raised (Skepsheik's for example). Instead he deflected, and now we know he doesn't actually want to advance the conversation (I know many people already thought this, I had some hope though).

I'm with Welch here. Ophelia's almost comical self-regard is evident in almost everything she writes. She dishes out uncharitable criticism of others on an almost daily basis, all while demonstrating a spectacular, bristling unwillingness to admit error or accept the slightest correction.

If she wants to get less flak, she'll have to stop acting like a spoiled, infallible brat and get over her self-serving delusion that the reason she gets pushback is that she is an "outspoken woman."

It's no accident that she (like Laden and PZ) has alienated so many former allies (including her authorial collaborator) and that her best friends in the movement appear to be Zvan, Aratina Sewer, Josh the SpokesHarpy, and EllenBeth Wachs.
I'm leaning towards cynicism with regards to this situation, especially considering what I've read of Benson's output over the last year or so. I have my depressive phases (as do many people), but I tend to stay off the internet during them, and try to spend more time outdoors exercising and playing with my dogs, or visiting with my friends. I don't have Twitter or Facebook accounts either, and I know better than to go look myself up on RateMyProfessor or similar. Really, if Ophelia's pals (and she receives several orders of magnitude more cyber-attention and sympathy than I ever would) wanted to do her a favor, they would suggest that she restrict her internet wanderings, at least for awhile. Given her conference attendance and speaking, it's not as if she has social anxiety that prevents her from interacting with people IRL. She might like people online more than she does in meatspace, but she's certainly not the only person who has that bias.

Meanwhile, the Skepchicks have yet to come up with a Thursday Bad Graph post, or whatever it was that Becky Whatnot called her radical new idea.

Seriously, it's like the entire FfTB and Skepchick crew are a load of Poes, like a bunch of religionists pretending to be atheists to discredit us by behaving like complete fucking idiots, freeloaders and general cunts.
