I knew way too many young women when I was in college who had to abandon things like physics, math, computer science, or engineering because a toxic environment of non-stop sexism from students and teachers just wasn’t worth it to them. It wasn’t worth feeling like shit every day, being triggered, being targeted for all sorts of inappropriate touching or harassment, fighting every day not only to remain sane and calm, but also on top of that continue learning in these subjects they found interesting (it’s worth noting that stress and depression make learning new information even harder than it would be normally).

And this is a tale that keeps happening. I know it keeps happening because my secondary, going to a very liberal prominent university, had to drop her physics/math double major and find a completely different major. Because the intensity of the sexism just didn’t prove worth it anymore.

Wait...is Cerberus saying that the reason there aren't more women in technical fields is that they don't have the spine for it? Words just...

Apparently in science/tech/engineering/math fields there is just a a total ubiquity of sexually harassing and denigrating brodudes who will simply not tolerate the woman folk ever being comfortable or succeeding in their fields. They regularly schedule meetings in between all those keg stands, ultimate frisbee tourneys, and weekly Stonecutter get-togethers.

In high school (several geologic era's ago) I took a SF and Fantasy in Literature course and the required reading was "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. Le Guin. A really interesting story with applications in the gender wars. Le Guin posits a race of neutrally gendered people (who only morph into genders for reproduction).

I was very glad I took that course.

I've read a lot of Le Guin over the years. Left Hand is one of the best. Also try The Dispossessed, and The Telling. Anyone who read The Word for World is Forest recognizes the world in Avatar, and Harry Potter read like a kids version of the Earthsea Trilogy except that that was alreay supposed to be for kids. (don't watch the bad attempt at a film version of that)

My sister the anthropologist put me on to her stuff since most of her stuff reads like an anthro study of one investigator going in to study the society and you always find out all the stuff an anthro study would.. except with an added dramatic story on top.

Great review of Le Guin, JAB. I had only read the one book of hers, but now I'm really interested.

Another really good SF author is Octavia Butler. Very character driven stories, often dealing with race/racism, and also religion. In The Parable of the Sower and the sequel The Parable of the Talents, her main character has an interesting take on religion, called Earthseed. Personally, it was just a touch too woo for me, but I still really enjoyed the development of the main character and her reasoning behind Earthseed. I haven't read a lot of her books, but she's the kind of writer that I would not think twice about buying one of hers.

Re the graphs you presented:
- Does the increase in not-married rates for women, by age, from 2000 to 2012 also apply to men? (Given that the marriage rate has been decreasing, and the age at marriage increasing, overall - not just for women.)
- Why is this a problem? I read the article at the link, but think that marriage is becoming less important than it used to be. Just because the marriage rate is decreasing (for the population overall, over time) doesn't necessarily mean more people are going without meaningful relationships.

I am convinced the biggest schism in this entire thing is people who grew up on the Internet before social media and those who entered in the MySpace or later eras.

I have noticed that most of the shit stirrers are, for a lack of a better word, old (no offense to those wonderful pitters who are also in the same age range) at least from my 23, almost 24, year old perspective. Those of us in the younger generation got our whiney and drama llama internet fights out of our system in High School. Despite it being mildly entertaining for a while, I'd say most of us Generation Y and Millennials are over it. All some of these bloggers need is a xanga-esque layout and I'd swear to god it was 2005 and I was going through my awkward and ragey sophomore year again.

Rebecca Watson and peers were right on that cusp and probably missed the lesson.

I don't see the problem, but then again my view is distorted by being the child of parents who didn't marry or have her until later in life. I'm the oldest of 2. I was born when my father was 43 and my mother was 34 and they had only gotten married the year before (conceived 8 months into the marriage). 25 years later and they're still together. Meanwhile lots of my peers who have younger parents are dealing with divorced/divorcing parents. Sometimes good things come to those who wait.

Heh, my mum was 43 and my father 35, when I was born, and I have a brother who is 13 years my senior and was a fully-developed seven-month baby at birth. He gets married for the first time at the age of 61 in June and I've shied away from the wedding bells in the past a few times. So I guess that's why I have difficulties understanding why anyone should be worried about marriage rates and age. Or about having a relationship ar all.

Complex question, but the studies suggest something quite a bit different from the hysteria generated by the religious. Interesting observation in the article:

I seem to be kvetching a lot about Nugent's efforts and I should probably correct that by saying that I think his intentions (after a shakey start) are laudable. There have been some good comments made (although nothing that hasn't been said elsewhere), but a few serial idiots ensure that talk never gets too far before repeating the same old, same old. Move it on Michael, or watch it go around in circles until it goes down the drain.
