And this is a tale that keeps happening. I know it keeps happening because my secondary, going to a very liberal prominent university, had to drop her physics/math double major and find a completely different major. Because the intensity of the sexism just didn’t prove worth it anymore.
Wait...is Cerberus saying that the reason there aren't more women in technical fields is that they don't have the spine for it? Words just...
Apparently in science/tech/engineering/math fields there is just a a total ubiquity of sexually harassing and denigrating brodudes who will simply not tolerate the woman folk ever being comfortable or succeeding in their fields. They regularly schedule meetings in between all those keg stands, ultimate frisbee tourneys, and weekly Stonecutter get-togethers.

In high school (several geologic era's ago) I took a SF and Fantasy in Literature course and the required reading was "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. Le Guin. A really interesting story with applications in the gender wars. Le Guin posits a race of neutrally gendered people (who only morph into genders for reproduction).

I was very glad I took that course.
I've read a lot of Le Guin over the years. Left Hand is one of the best. Also try The Dispossessed, and The Telling. Anyone who read The Word for World is Forest recognizes the world in Avatar, and Harry Potter read like a kids version of the Earthsea Trilogy except that that was alreay supposed to be for kids. (don't watch the bad attempt at a film version of that)

My sister the anthropologist put me on to her stuff since most of her stuff reads like an anthro study of one investigator going in to study the society and you always find out all the stuff an anthro study would.. except with an added dramatic story on top.
Great review of Le Guin, JAB. I had only read the one book of hers, but now I'm really interested.

Another really good SF author is Octavia Butler. Very character driven stories, often dealing with race/racism, and also religion. In The Parable of the Sower and the sequel The Parable of the Talents, her main character has an interesting take on religion, called Earthseed. Personally, it was just a touch too woo for me, but I still really enjoyed the development of the main character and her reasoning behind Earthseed. I haven't read a lot of her books, but she's the kind of writer that I would not think twice about buying one of hers.

More and more women continue to postpone marriage past their late 20s, and those who do so are finding it harder to marry in their 30s.
If you skipped my post where I listed all 10 parts of the talk you should al least watch watch this one.

If you are a Black American, you probably already know all about this. If you are White, well this is your future, coming soon, if not to you then probably to someone you know and younger than you.

I did watch the video. Applies to some extent to all working women but especially to black women in the US, I imagine.

Re the graphs you presented:
- Does the increase in not-married rates for women, by age, from 2000 to 2012 also apply to men? (Given that the marriage rate has been decreasing, and the age at marriage increasing, overall - not just for women.)
- Why is this a problem? I read the article at the link, but think that marriage is becoming less important than it used to be. Just because the marriage rate is decreasing (for the population overall, over time) doesn't necessarily mean more people are going without meaningful relationships.

How’s about you contribute something to any thread besides your moronic rages and fits? And how’s about the rest of you stop deliberately misrepresenting people and going so ridiculously over the top when arguing with someone. God but you’re a bunch of hateful fucks.
And a later one (#1301):
Yeah and I remember all of you. I remember how none of you said anything to TLC when he was saying he’d smack bluharmony if she didn’t quit seeming so meek. I remember how you turned on Walton when he tried mellowing you all out. I remember how you treat each and every person who gets on the badside of one of you.

You are not a compassionate group of people. You are hateful, bitter and cruel. I came here thinking this was just the slympit exaggerating shit to drum up hate against you guys. I see they’re exactly right. God damn, fucking fix yourselves.
Gawd, but I love the smell of apostasy in the morning – particularly of bigotry and false faiths ….

Looks like some nonsense about decreasing marriage (note, marriage, not long term relationship) rates and increasing marriage age. Apparently this problem is only striking women (particularly black women)? I don't know which planet I'm currently living on, but I know just as many unmarried guys in their 30's as I do gals with both genders having a healthy mix of children and no children.

I don't see the problem, but then again my view is distorted by being the child of parents who didn't marry or have her until later in life. I'm the oldest of 2. I was born when my father was 43 and my mother was 34 and they had only gotten married the year before (conceived 8 months into the marriage). 25 years later and they're still together. Meanwhile lots of my peers who have younger parents are dealing with divorced/divorcing parents. Sometimes good things come to those who wait.

Steersman wrote:While you make a credible case on some points, notably the question of bullying, one might also argue that, at least relative to the latter, you are, in some cases at least, conflating “bullying” with “reasoned criticism” – which might be construed as disingenuous at best while “intellectually dishonest” might be more accurate.

For instance, you claim that those “bullies” “continue to lie about us after having been corrected”, and point to Ophelia Benson’s highly questionable if not actually deluded assertion that her prior statements were not the same thing as making “an analogy between TAM and Nazi Germany”. Well, I beg to differ and have expressed that opinion repeatedly, and she has yet to even address the opinion, and neither she nor anyone else has yet managed to refute it. In which case your “continue to lie …” charge is simply unmitigated horseshit. Not a particularly good recommendation as to the scope of “free thought” supposedly espoused by all concerned.

But, as a point of reference – should you wish to undertake the mission impossible, the dictionary (1) states:
a•nal•o•gy (-nl-j)
n. pl. a•nal•o•gies
1.
a. Similarity in some respects between things that are otherwise dissimilar.
b. A comparison based on such similarity.
In which case her “As Jews in Germany” is quite clearly (2) – by the use of “as” – creating an analogy which compares Jews in Germany to women at TAM – the elements which are similar – without that in the slightest suggesting that D. J. Grothe was Hitler incarnate or that he was planning the imminent invasion of Poland.

Hah. Watching, I'm getting the opposite impression. It's the college age and school age fuckwits who rule at A+, along with the occasional older twat going through a mid-life crisis. I'm pretty sure it's that college age group (through to the early thirties) who are most srsly infected by the SJW wank.

Heh, my mum was 43 and my father 35, when I was born, and I have a brother who is 13 years my senior and was a fully-developed seven-month baby at birth. He gets married for the first time at the age of 61 in June and I've shied away from the wedding bells in the past a few times. So I guess that's why I have difficulties understanding why anyone should be worried about marriage rates and age. Or about having a relationship ar all.

Thanks.

Can’t say that I really follow the conversation there with Julian as he also seems to be talking about regular television shows. But one of his tweets provided a link to an interesting article about an application in South Africa for a TV channel to provide adult content.

Complex question, but the studies suggest something quite a bit different from the hysteria generated by the religious. Interesting observation in the article:
As I said in my submission, porn seems to reliably increase only two things: arousal and religious outrage, but perhaps negative causality in relation to common sense needs to be added to that list.
Really think that our attitudes to sex, prostitution in particular, are causing far more problems than they should be if we were acting sensibly.

Yep, original. 'Twas I, with about 4 minutes work.
As for the agent offer: what is the hourly rate?
(I mean in litres of beer per hour for no real work until you start getting stroppy.)

Pfft. Venice? That old dump? It's half underwater already. Sure, I missed a minor plot point. Who cares? If you ask me, the asteroid did us a favour. ;)
Fuck off! Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world! (It does smell of rotten eggs at times, though).

For two years, I went to Portogruao via Venice, and always stopped at the Mestre station. Only the last time I went there (2009) did I stay on the train and cross the Ponte della Libertà. Get off the train, end-up in front of the Grand Canal. What a sight to see!

Seem to recollect seeing a documentary a while back of a man and his family opening a bordello in, I think, NewZealand, although I can’t seem to find the link at the moment. Interesting perspective on the business – as was Xaviera Hollander’s book The Happy Hooker.

Not for everyone – very few jobs are, fortunately – but “listening to the women” suggests making the profession illegal is the worst of all possible worlds. Ran across a quote on the “FeministWhore” site that is, I think, rather telling:
I’m not even going to bother arguing that topic, but what I will say is this: When it comes to the ability to earn an income women can never be considered to have achieved ‘equality of opportunity’ in a country where prostitution is in any way criminalized. CHS and her ‘gender feminist’ counterparts can argue all they want about the importance of ‘equal gender representation’ on academic panels, and on those panels they can argue all they want about how much women earn in comparison to men and how that effects that status of women, but until they recognize that the criminalization of either the buying or selling of sexual services is inherently discriminatory against women they just sound like a bunch of self-interested privileged hypocrites to me.
And one woman in the business I met seemed to be quite certain that, as she put, “it was the best job in the world”.

But an article here, of many, on the topic that you might be interested in as well.

I feel, for some reason, I have to distance myself from such accusations. I am not, in fact, a mafioso. I do live in a neighborhood that was infested by the mafia as I grew up. Waking up to a dead body on a car hood was not a big surprise. And then the neighborhood changed. Still, tip generously indeed. Or else!

Aratina pulls a slightly comical, "I have in my hand a list of Communists in the State Department." You can guess what happens when his bluff is called:
Aratina Sewer wrote:One of the most ardent slimepitters runs several of the impersonation accounts, John. And the web of connections between them and people we can actually identify as slimepitters (which is hard since almost everyone there is anonymous with pseudonyms) is very strong (we have done an analysis of the connections on a private forum). You could do the same and see for yourself; just trace back who the impersonation accounts follow on Twitter and who follows them.

Why the fuck are you even wasting your time with this divisive bullshit?
Why does it matter to anyone who decides to endure the archaic prostitutional economic transactional ritual of formal marriage?

To Whom is that post aimed?
Oh Dear! I was trying, by using the word "community" instead of "population", to try and sound a bit less dispassionate and clinical about people as I have been advised IRL.

I guess it did not work? You humans are a lot of work, interesting but exhausting.

Anyway, the "driving a wedge between the sexes" business was brought up fairly recently and I remembered that issue was also brought up in the video series I linked to earlier, which lead me to family formation etc. etc.

That was all. I would advise you not to read any more into it other than it it is one of the things I am interested in. The breeding and informal eugenics practices from a population genetics perspective around the world.

Well mainly WEIRD ones anyway:

http://thesituationist.wordpress.com/20 ... -subjects/
Behavioral scientists routinely publish broad claims about human psychology and behavior in the world’s top journals based on samples drawn entirely from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic (WEIRD) societies. Researchers – often implicitly – assume that either there is little variation across human populations, or that these “standard subjects” are as representative of the species as any other population.

I am inclined to agree. Those of us who have been on the Internet a long time recognise all the symptoms of a good old fashioned flamefest. Twitter etc. makes the flamefest much faster

Reminds me of Garfield Minus Garfield.

"Skepicism Minus Skepicism is a site dedicated to removing <named person> from community conversations in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain P. Z. Myers. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated blogger as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb."

No, you prove it!
I said it first!
No, I said...blah blah blah.

That's about the level the (and I use this word advisedly) "debate" gets to over at Nugent's. What he thinks he's achieving, I don't know. What he actually seems to be achieving is an extended demonstration of the failure of reason as a method for resolving certain disputes.

I thought that membership here equalling instant Peezus fatwah was established baboon lore.
Julian was an aggressive and proud FTBer and Pharyngulite before he decamped for A+ (then got sick of their tripe and flounced angrily). He's got a chip on his shoulder and seems in most respects to be a true believer SJW, though, like EBW, his bullshit detector apparently does still function. I was actually surprised that so few people seemed to remember him over at the 'Gulag, particularly PZ, though I guess it's been a while and there's a fair amount of turnover.

I seem to be kvetching a lot about Nugent's efforts and I should probably correct that by saying that I think his intentions (after a shakey start) are laudable. There have been some good comments made (although nothing that hasn't been said elsewhere), but a few serial idiots ensure that talk never gets too far before repeating the same old, same old. Move it on Michael, or watch it go around in circles until it goes down the drain.
