I tested this theory by reading the transcript of the Evo Psych panel at Skepchickcon that Svan and Therribles claim is so different than the summary reviewed by Coyne and Pinker.
It was, as you might guess (and as Dave2 has reported) exactly in line with the summary - albeit with a couple of extra gratuitous anti-science swipes thrown in by Myers and Laden. Those two were so annoying I actually felt myself say "shut up already, let Amanda Marcotte speak!"
Re: Shall Mr Vacula Make a Misstep in the Capital of Eire?
I think it's official. The internet has been taken over by the mainstream. And now it sucks.
Re: Shall Mr Vacula Make a Misstep in the Capital of Eire?
Pfft. Like DOING stuff counts. Who could have known about that? What, 2-3 people? So some blind black dude had what could have been a really horrible day turn into something nice because you and another person were decent human beings. WHERE ARE THE TWEETS? THE INSTAGRAMS! HOW CAN YOU BE A GOOD PERSON IF YOU DON'T LOUDLY ANNOUNCE IT TO THE WORLD EVERY FIVE MINUTES!!!!
PZ and his lot remind me of one of the better "Miami VIce" episodes where they're investigating a Televangelist accused of rape, played by Brian Dennehey.
They watch the guy put on his show, do his schtick, and then they follow him afterwards, where he changes out of the $600 suit and into old work clothes. He then goes to a soup kitchen, gives them a check and spends hours helping feed people. After that, a homeless shelter. They realize that the TV show is sleazy as hell, but this guy spends all his time outside of the show helping people. The majority of the money he takes in goes to charity. They look into his past, and he's spent his life prior to the show trying to help people all over the world. Caught malaria and some other fun things because he was doing all this stuff.
So finally, they ask him about it, and he says:
"For years, I tried to be honest. I tried to say "your money will go to feed the hungry, help the sick, build homes for people who have none". I almost starved. But I put on this suit, and tell them that their money will get them a place in heaven, and jesus will love them more if they donate more, that they're good people if they donate more, and the money rolls in. I make sure that money goes to the people who need it most, but if this...charade...is the only way i can get that money so I can actually help people, then i'll hold my nose and wear this suit, and do what I have to so that those who need help get help."
All PZ and his crew would see is "ebul christian" and try to shut the guy down, even though in that (fictional) case, here's someone doing a lot of good, even though he has to be kind of sleazy to do it. He's behaving, some of the time, in a way that most people would disapprove of, so of course, he is of no use as a person, right?

Along with those actual real-world protests, there's also an attempt to get this trending on Twitter using Thunderclap for those of us who're lazy apathetic fucks. With Irish feminists and conservative Catholics currently lobbying for the same harmful laws as Sweden, I think it's worth a couple of mouse clicks to give this a bit more attention.
Who knows, if it trends it might even get noticed by the mainstream media, although in Britain I think they're all too busy covering unborn royal babies and which dead person will feature on the next £5 note...

Anyway, both Turkey and Sweden appear to be in the grip of dogmatic and theological forces that appear to be aligned in their opposition to sex workers.
I am also sure this is not the whole story for either of them but anyway, a couple of links:

Petite Jasmine:

- Sex worker in Sweden. Apparently she failed to buy into the current Feminist narrative, and as a consequence was denied custody of her children, and denied any protection from an abusive ex-partner and was subsequently murdered by him.

AndrewV69, if you liked Upstairs Downstairs, you will probably like Downton Abbey. It's Up/Down on a grander scale. However, it is much more sentimental and somewhat treacly at times, so that may or may not appeal.

I might give S.O.A. a go again. I've been burned by too many series just getting shit as absolute fuck and making me gutted that I wasted my time with them (yes "Lost" "Mad Men" I'm talking about you) so maybe I judged it too harshly.
If I could recommend a series I'd say give Breaking Bad a go if you haven't already watched it. It's showing the last half of the final series in August so there's no chance of it getting massively shit and up to now it's been consistently epic all the way through.
Oh, and as I'm writing this an advert for the new Alan partridge film just came on the telly. Back of the net.

Next thing you know Ed is going to go full Slymepit and post a picture of Bachmann with a foot long hotdog crammed in her mouth!

It really looks like the GOP is throwing Bachmann under the bus.
Her continuous stream of wild statements that are both false and senseless are costing them a lot.
It makes them look dumb. Or at least dumber. It also cost millions to keep getting her reelected. She outspent her opponent 10 to 1 and she barely won.
Now she is in serious legal trouble for misusing campaign funds. And I haven’t seen anyone who has bothered to defend her.

Imagine that. A conservative whose job is to make people enjoy being lied to turns out to be a creepy sleaze. I never would have guessed.

“The person familiar with the story said the firm successfully retrieved the gift before Bachmann could open it.â€
So, are they saying that someone interfered with a US Mail delivery? That sounds suspiciously like a federal offense to me.

Ok, I give up, Ed. What’s so fascinating about it? And please tell us why you think they would not have gotten it back if she opened it.

Prude shaming, slut shaming and general misogyny directed at a female public figure all rolled into one post plus comments. Nice.

I think we'd be best off making a new forum with no topic or mission plan at all. We could call it Chat-Wank.cunt wrote:
