I admire PZ Myers because
  • he is putting his balls on the line, fighting for our free speech rights to publish anonymous hearsay
  • standing against the patriarchal tyranny of the fifth amendment's due process clause
  • he has clearly developed a relationship and communications with his wife I can only envy. My ex-wife would have yelled at me for days had I published defamatory statements against others, and probably have filed for divorce if I had stood up to a Cease & Desist that offered a chance to back down without jeopardizing our finances. Especially if I had done all of that without discussing it with her.
There is much to be admired. Much to be admired.

The poor dears at Pharyngula just can't figure out why all the more visible figures in the community are disavowing them at an increasing pace.

The one thing that never occurs to them is that THEY"RE HORRIBLY IN THE WRONG.

Nah, it can't possibly be that...

When they do it, it's a brilliant and witty skewering of dudebro culture.

When we do it, it's just because we're infantile misogynists who don't know how to pronounce the word "sandwich" properly.

I can only imagine how that conversation would go when PZ's wife finds a formal complaint in the mail.
Mrs. PZ: "Paul, what's this? There's a letter in the mail from a legal agency saying that you made anonymous accusations of rape on your blog."

PZ: "Honey? Sweetie Pie? Love of my life? There's more at stake here than your feeble mind can comprehend. I have a duty to take a bullet for all womankind. We might be broke for a little while but I will have successfully defended you from the patriarchy. Maybe someday you'll understand."

Mrs. PZ: "I'm taking the kids. And the dog is mine too. Don't call, and don't send me advertisements for your new book in the mail either."

I wonder if we are falling into that trap, responding as if these assaults actually happened when there is precious little more than a narrative painted by Skeptchicks, FTB and some anons.
Is that what we're doing? Because I had thought we were calling bullshit on it. I mean, generally, when I use an argument of the form: "If X is true, then why do we see A, B, and C going on?" the conclusion is meant to be that X didn't actually happen.

Caine, Fleur du merde, over at Pharyngula, translates the Mr. Deity vid thusly:
... he goes on to lecture women about drinking, all of which boils down to “hey, don’t want to be raped, well, don’t get raped. Duh.” Short form: women who drink are slutty, they don’t say “no” to another drink, therefor, they are responsible.
Epic stupidity and intentional misrepresentation from the shit flower.

There have been so many lately, but: face > desk.

I read the Comics Curmudgeon to get a funny take on the daily comics I never read, but this one has me crying tears of rage. They have, in syndicated papers and websites, endorsed rape!

It's not just rape, it's alcohol fueled rape! That, or some bizarre face-melding thing - maybe one of them is an alien? I've heard they want our women.

If I could go a little bit "Morales" for a moment:

It's [Meta], in that Meyers and Thimbledick have ended up in the same line of wretched victims as Jillette and Krauss, all dispensable "men in red", while the indestrucable captain chuckles.

Also, Shermer's face is so plain I couldn't be bothered working with it.

What cracks me up is all these people taking his "the Gospels are anonymous" argument literally and "debunking" it.
That swoosh you hear, sounds like a tornado...that's the point going over their heads. I honestly think they need things explained to them very plainly, in words of one syllable or less. I don't think they can work their way through a thought that has multiple levels. Analogies are beyond them - we've seen many examples of that. I did see that "mofo" Elyse weighed in on it (saw the link, apparently another example of "if you don't take precautions you deserve to be raped" arguments, and Squirrely Amy puts her penny in (even adjusted for inflation, their thoughts aren't worth two cents).

It's all about making others completely responsible for you, and for you (well, them) to have absolutely no responsibility for anything they do. I'm surprised they aren't hard core determinists, but maybe that's a little to intellectual for them and not emotional enough. It's the ultimate child's dream. I guess we found Never Never Land and the kids who never grew up.
I gave up thinking it could ever be explained to them. They have their dogma, they like their dogma, and they'll punish anyone who questions it. They're not after results, that's clear from their "don't go to police" policy.

He still believes some of the crazy stuff, he just tries make it seem less crazy. Once again, he's a "I'm not that kind of Christian" Christian.
Speaking for myself, I look forward to each new article.

I like Ally because usually I am either nodding my head in agreement and/or doing a /facepalm multiple times before I even get half way through an article of his.

Then I read the comments and see who agrees with what and what arguments develop. In any event I can usually find something to think about in a different way and explore it in some depth.

YMMV

Reading Ophelia's blog, I am now at a crossroads. The age-old game of "is it a Poe or is it not a Poe".
But heck put Mr Deity right up there with Ray Comfort – Till we see a species evolve into another with our own eyes , it doesn’t happen!
What will it take to make these idiots understand logic 101, argument form, metaphors, and allegories?

Nobody is arguing that rape doesn't happen, we are arguing that until you can provide proper evidence that it happened to X person, there's no reason to believe that individual account. There are mountains and mountains of evidence to show that evolution happens, just as there is mountains and mountains of evidence to show that rape, as a phenomena, exists. Just not mountains of evidence to show it happened to X person because X person refuses to give evidence in the name of anonymity and instead is compelled to have PZ post it on his blog.

Then of course they'll make the argument that you believe your friends about a number of any other trivial things without actual evidence. This is of course ignoring the fact that the consequences of believing that a potentially innocent person raped somebody are not equal to the consequences of believing that my friend has a bad case of diarrhea.

OK. I never really waded through the comment section of an OB post at length before. Just WTF!?!?! How can a group of people be so mentally fucked as to turn the most basic bit of commentary on personal responsibility completely upside down and inside out in defense of their victim narrative!?!?! How do these people function in the real world?

Some of us do.

I wonder if Watson, when studying communication and all that stuff, came across the concept of creating a new reality? Painting a picture of the world and sticking to it, until people believe that is the reality. They seem to have convinced a lot of people that conferences are rape-fests.

I wonder if we are falling into that trap, responding as if these assaults actually happened when there is precious little more than a narrative painted by Skeptchicks, FTB and some anons.

Maybe. But one can also fall into the trap of overanalyzing everything until you're in a bunker screaming at the kids to get the fuck inside, the helicopters are coming.

Three whole words! She must have spent hours on that post, trying different combinations, finding just the write words for the tone she wants. Truly a masterpiece, a....dare I say it...tour de force?
Well, she has rethought the issue and added a colon; it's now "Behold: an asshole"

This is what I don't understand either.

It seems when this topic gets argued on Pharyngula, they're incapable of understanding the difference between a moral argument and practical advice. Being a responsible drinker and not putting yourself at risk is interpreted by them as blaming victims of rape for being irresponsible.

Nobody is arguing that rape isn't bad. If you find a girl passed out or heavily intoxicated to the point where she can't reasonably consent to your advances, no reasonable person would call that anything but rape. The kicker is that they're unable to comprehend the fact that rapists even exist, and turn this into a "should" vs. "is" thing.

Rapists exist, therefore doing anything but taking precautions against getting raped is just opening yourself up to get raped (I.E., deciding not to refuse when someone continually tops your glass off, taking drinks that you didn't personally prepare from other people, leaving your drink with another person for an extended period of time, etc.).

It's a given that rape isn't an issue of how much a girl drank but of penises nonconsensually getting put into vaginas, but at the same time you have to wonder that if this is such a prevalent thing why aren't people more cautious?

Murder shouldn't happen under any circumstances either but that doesn't mean I'm going to go to the barrio in Mexico and act indignant when I get murdered. Because I have a realistic, adult awareness of the world around me.
It's the classic 'bike lock' argument.

"It's wrong to steal bikes, Why should I have to spend money on a lock just to keep my bike from being stolen?"
"Because you do."
"Oh, so you're defending bike thieves?"
And if you choose to not lock up your bike, I still don't agree that it's your FAULT that the bike was stolen. It's the thief's fault. But, I do think you could have dealt with the world in a slightly more realistic fashion.

The Narrative is everything to them. They have nothing else. Read Ophies next post on "cleverations" (can't blame her for that, it's some guy named Scalzi - remember seeing the name before but no idea where)

Ophelia, in her usual loquacious style, adds
I can’t bear people who think they’re fraffly clever and are always being it, which means they aren’t. Always being funny when really they’re just being obnoxious or tedious or both.
I think she needs to look at her commentariat again.

You know what finished off the Salem witch trials, don't you.

It was the accusation that the girls made against a high official's wife, I think it was the governor's wife. It wasn't so fun for the officials watching any more when it became clear that it could hit them. The patriarchy began to deny the girls' experiences of attempted rape by spirits (as I recall, that was one of the claims), thereby mercilessly oppressing women.

Why would Silverman and Mr. Deity do anything but oppose the Public Rape Trials of today? Even if it turns out that Shermer was legally at fault for something, as unlikely as it seems from the tabloid trash emanating from Pharyngula, there's absolutely no reason for them to do anything but oppose the mob mentality exhibited by the insipid little despot of an internet forum.

So it's win-win for today. All who are not they are as bad as slymepitters now, opposing the scummy tactics that have become the tool of the righteous, and they get to feel even more right, and martyred, in their little echo chambers.

Oh, and I'm not sure 'barrio' means what you think it means. Just saying... ;)
It's just Spanish for "neighborhood", isn't it?

How do you say "the 'hood" in Spanish? Pretend like I'm describing the Mexican version of Detroit.

No. Just terminated a bunch of /24s sending in over 200 connections each, and banned some of them. What's your IP address?

Bolded mine. I also remember reading that something similar put an end to the Spanish Inquisition. As soon as high level officials started getting thrown in jail, the accusers suddenly lost their zeal...
