There's nothing to lose by false accusations, there's no way to fight back against accusations. There's, just like now, not much hard evidence in any direction.

Their entire argument is that people are so shitty and that we live in this rape culture were everyone gets away with it and basically everyone is raped and half the guys you meet are rapists.. but at the same time nobody would falsely accuse someone else? So the entire culture is fucked up and lawless except when it isn't and moral citizens would never abuse laws? Is there a metagame here? Do they realize none of their "solutions" actually work and it's just a perpetual kicking of the can onto new disaster areas they can be outraged about?

I guess there is one option that would work. Women are always right and men are always wrong in these matters. Simple and consistent. It makes sense that gender should be decisive in legal matters. That's equality.
What an awful yet believable vision of the future. "Mutually assured destruction" except only 1 side holds the nukes.
Welp, this girl wrote a guide called Booty-Call Etiquette and presumably if a guy follows her advice he should be safe?
Whether you’re a regular drunk-dialer or fairly cautious (with exceptions), it’s important to note that even when getting down and dirty there are a few guidelines to abide by to make your hosting experience successful.

Upon arrival, offer her a drink.

Personally I prefer an alcoholic beverage on most occasions, because nothing makes a late-night meet up awkward like sobering up! But even if you don’t have liquor on hand, you can at least offer your guest water.

If she’s walking into a party, let her know in advance.

Walking into a guy’s house at 2 am to find all of his friends sitting in the living room watching TV is like taking a walk of shame in advance. If you invite a girl over while you have friends over it is proper etiquette to warn her ahead of time of what she’s going to be walking into. Also– if you expect her to hang with your friends prior to going to your room to do whatever it is you invited her there to do, try to excuse the two of you in a timely fashion. No girl makes a 3am trip to watch Sports Center reruns with your boys.

If she arrives after midnight, assume she is sleeping over.

Unless she is the type to make a quick getaway, assume she is going to sleep over. Even if your relationship is strictly business, assume she is sleeping over. Bottom line: Don’t invite someone over if you wouldn’t want them to sleepover.

HYDRATION OR RESENTMENT.

GET HER A GLASS OF WATER/WATER BOTTLE BEFORE BED. She shouldn’t have to ask/search your cabinets herself. There is literally nothing worse than waking up feeling like you’re dying of dehydration after a night of drinking.

Offer a t-shirt.

Offer a t-shirt/shorts/etc. for her to sleep in; it’s the polite thing to do. She probably doesn’t mind sleeping naked, but when she has to use the bathroom in the middle of the night she doesn’t want to your unsuspecting roommate to get a full frontal show.

Breakfast.

If you wake up late and nobody has anywhere to be; offer breakfast. You can make her breakfast (even if it is just a bagel), you can take her out to breakfast (even if it’s just Dunkin Donuts), but you’re both going to eat so you might as well just do it together. I once had a guy give me a cold pop tart– in this situation it truly is the thought that counts.

Transportation.

If you were to go on a road trip with someone, most likely you’d offer to pay for part of the gas usage. When a girl comes to your apartment late at night, chances are she paid for her cab. Therefore, you should insist on paying for her cab ride home. Cash exchange can be awkward, the solution to that is having an Uber account. Uber comes with a lot of benefits– for example; the app is attached to your credit card! Bonus: the drivers tend to arrive at your apartment at record speed, eliminating any awkward lingering. Don’t expect her to take public transportation because she probably is wearing heels and looks like a train wreck.

Note: If you offer to pay for her cab in order to convince her to come over, you need to do that. If you tell her you’re ordering her an Uber it is your responsibility to do so. One of my friends recently had an encounter in which the guy who invited her over ordered her a “Lyft” (similar app, just with a pink mustache on all of the cars), to reprimand her…. don’t.

Upon Departure

Make sure you have her phone number if this is the first time you’ve hung out. Kiss her goodbye. You have already kissed a million times in the past 12 hours, so you can do it one last time. This doesn’t mean you’re dating, its common courtesy. If you’re in public and feel compelled to kiss her on the cheek instead, most girls won’t be insulted (unless you are regularly seeing each other.) A hug is ridiculously awkward– you literally might as well just high-five her, you weirdo.

Follow up

Even if you don’t intend on making an effort to get to know your booty-call further, you should always follow-up with her after your hangout session. Whether its texting her to tell her you had a good time, to make sure she got home safely, or to express interest in seeing her again– say SOMETHING. Again, this doesn’t mean you’re dating, but it makes it less awkward if you run into each other spontaneously…. or you want to booty-call again.
See? No Problem.

IE with EMET is safe. Just don't dare attach it to anything Adobe or anything Java.

Maybe. Over on Pharyngula, however, I've learned that the term "pick up" definitely is. It casts women in the role of an object and denies their humanity. I'm a little suspicious because I don't know if people actually analyze the grammatical nuances of idioms like that. Pretty sure they don't. Also, I'm pretty sure women and gay men have used the term themselves from time to time.

@ Tony! The Queer Shoop,
Ogvorbis:
Please don’t go.
Thank you very much. Now I have that stupid song in my head for the rest of the day.

But that’s not the reason I want to share this thread with such illustrious people as Nerd of Redhead and … who else is illustrious here? I forgot.

It’s fascinating to see how O g r a p i s t’s flounce is on the whole readily accepted by the Horde now that it’s another Horde member who triggered it, even though s/he/it was basically repeating the Slymepit meme about your dear departed Oggie. I bet you were all sick of the guy, but didn’t dare to speak out because he had been accepted as ‘one of us’ by the likes of Cainaji and perma-hysterical Tony, not to mention the sedating influence of the toe-curling purple prose by Crip Dyke that Oggie inspired (Did you follow a creative writing course, Crip? If so, you should ask your money back.)

The pounce-hugs were never as readily offered as when Oggie came begging for them with one of his ‘recovered memories’ that always happened to be right on topic. Did it never occur to you lot that Oggie was about as truthful as the Baron von Münchhausen? You should call yourself the Herd, not the Horde, because this is tribal herd mentally at its finest.

Don’t go, please don’t go. Fuck that song.

By the way, P e e z u s, how is your research in developmental evolutionary biology coming along? Are those zebra fish you bought in your local pet shop already breeding happily in your ‘lab’? I can’t wait to see your Nature paper about your exciting discoveries.

It’s a good thing that the World Humanist Congress has invited you to be their token scientist and threw a free ticket to Oxford your way. I noticed that you are on a panel discussing the important topic Drowning in noise: how accommodating nonsense poisons our discourse. You are indisputably an expert on this topic, seeing how much poisonous nonsense you accommodate in your comments sections, and I will happily assume that you are going to teach all those censorial Brits a lesson or two about Freeze Peach, about unmoderated threads that are heavily moderated, and on how to convince yourself that banning dissenting voices when you are a Rage Blogger-cum-Social Justice Warrior is not censorship. Maybe you can also explain your audience something about your country’s libel laws that allow fine folks like you to accuse others of being serial rapists based on hearsay and to do so with impunity. That’ll teach those fucking hypocrites from across the Big Pond!

And Tony, please don’t cry. Oggie will be back, like a bad penny. Mark my words.

Ha, Hitler, funny. Cos mild criticism is equating people to one of the biggest mass murderers of all time, maybe I’m being an FTBully too? Disappointing to see you use the same tactic there Ophelia, not the response I’d expect of you. A person was seriously hurt by your words, you didn’t mean to I’m sure. None of this is the “worst” thing ever, neither is it so piffling that it is not worth talking about in a comment section. Trying to dismiss the criticism by painting it that way is not good.

Personally I empathise as I just can’t imagine Ophelia herself acting in anything other than a similar way if there was a post on RDF (for example) about something which affected women, but didn’t mentioning them or how it affects them particularly. Ophelia says, politely, can we just remember that thing X also affects women and this is often forgotten about or they are erased. Male-blogger responds dismissively saying, “Can we not” … Hmmm. I can just see an “It’s a guy thing” like reaction, with roles reversed and the usual suspects dismissing the “three words of sheer horror” as “making them just like Hitler” and being an “FTBully” to “Male-blogger” with the terrible, searing, mild criticism and pointing out of how the words used seemed to dismiss the valid concerns of a marginalised group. So yeah, ironic that applying my mental model of how Ophelia would respond in the same situation makes me side with CatieCat here!

The FIRE article that Zvan links does a pretty good job blowing holes in her argument:

http://chronicle.com/article/Campus-Is- ... or/134770/

It argues that we should really be moving in the opposite direction, since college hearings really are "Kangaroo Courts" lacking the checks and balances of Civil Court. I would go further and say that Zvan's entire premise is flawed, given that you establish both parties have equal "risk" (as she puts it), that you are allowed to lessen the rigor of proof. At that point I would go Blackstone, "It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer", which 50/50 doesn't even begin to satisfy. There's just something about innocent people going down for something they haven't done that should bug us mightily.

But there are more things wrong with Zvan's proposal, like the fact that college hearings (which don't include legal counsel or actual judges, or anyone else with actual knowledge of jurisprudence) won't prevent real criminal proceedings against the accused. All those acceptable "false positives" that Zvan arbitrarily declares indifference to are going to return as civil counter suits when criminal courts acquit the false positives (as exemplified in the article). Are these suits going to be against the accuser? Uh-uh, they're going to be against the deep pocket, the college.

It all boils down to a misclassification, as the article points out. Are sexual assault cases "like" civil cases, where the loser pays a fine and goes on with life, or are they more "like" criminal cases, where there is a perp and a victim. Well, the answer is clear. They are more like criminal cases, and personally I think that's where they should be adjudicated, not by some panel including students, professors and administrators. Seriously, think back on some of your fellow students, and some of your professors...

Mostly good advice for someone wanting to buy a dedicated gaming rig. But your advice on integrated graphics is a bit out of date. I've had no problems playing recentish games (Portal, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim, etc) on Intel 4000/5000 chipsets (the former in an Intel NUC -- very nice little back-of-the-monitor box; the latter, a Macbook Air) -- not at the highest quality, or with AA and/or aniso turned way up, but very playable nevertheless. And, I've enjoyed seeing a measurable drop in my monthly electricity usage since I moved my gaming rig back to my visualization lab at work (where it belongs). I'd say the drop in energy usage, combined with my home office no longer being unpleasantly hot, is well worth the small reduction in GFX quality.
Some modern single players games with draw-distance tricks can be dumbed down and played like it's 2005. Especially those that port to or from consoles and their low-budget graphics AND if you're willing to use those low-budget settings. Others, like shooters, flight sims, PC only (Star Citizen, most every MMO, etc.), can't. That's why it's a pass.

Right now the BEST IG chips from Intel run worse (at about 90% of) than an NVIDIA GT 640 (released to the budget market in 2011). The GT 640 is not exactly a great card or well respected:
... In early June, Kepler finally jumped in the kiddie pool aboard the GeForce GT 640, an offering situated firmly in budget territory. The card launched at $99 and currently retails in the $99.99-109.99 range, almost squarely opposite the Radeon HD 7750. Nvidia makes a couple other versions of the GT 640, too, but those are for PC vendors, and you won't find them listed at e-tailers like Newegg and Amazon.
So, yes, you can force graphical performance to something that's pretty low. And get an almost playable FPS. But, it's a big mistake as games only become more complex and these chipsets can't even run older, popular games reasonably well, like these Battlefield FPS results:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/cpu/amd- ... ield-2.png
Battlefield 3 is one of the most popular online shooters. It is not a new title, yet it is still a rather heavy application that’s suitable for benchmarking flagship graphics cards. When running on integrated graphics cores at the Full-HD resolution, the game cannot be expected to have a playable frame rate even if you lower its visual quality settings to their minimums. You can only get something like an average 24 fps with slowdowns to 20 fps.
You also mentioned BioShock, yes you can really dumb it down and 'play it.' But here are the FPS benchmarks:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/cpu/amd- ... hock-2.png
BioShock Infinite runs on Unreal Engine 3, a highly popular and widely used game engine. Judging by the results, the engine doesn't work well with Intel's integrated graphics cores.
So, we're not running games, worth a damn, on the Unreal Engine. That cuts out quality/decent graphics on the XCOM reboot, the Mass Effect Series, the Infinity Blade series, the Gears of War series, the Borderlands series, the Batman series. And a ton of other games that are not my style, interest or (perhaps) not that great, but other people like...

And we have the same issue with games on the Crysis Engine -- SOME of them barely run at an acceptable FPS at the lowest settings possible. Some just don't, like the 4000 you mentioned:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/cpu/amd- ... ysis-1.png

And we haven't gotten into the tearing issue these chipsets have. But I think I've made my point. Avoid IG if you want to game. You might be able to dumb SOME games down and get a low-quality experience. Other games won't even load. And what you're getting is a really crappy and a mere $150 card can get you at least two years of quality game play before you need to consider an upgrade.

Whereas the IG... Well, the results speak for themselves.

This usually means wearing a dress or skirt while on one's period, but no underwear or pads/tampons. Bleeding wherever one sees patriarchy. On the court stairs, in the male owned malls, on the streets (cuz men own them or something), on the buses so that everyone can see (and be grossed out by) one's protest. Shock the world. Yes. Laptops are crappy game machines. But make sure you desktop has a real video card. Even the best, most modern IG chipsets are vastly inferior to anything but a budget card which, in itself, is just something you'd need to rip-out and replace the day you finished configuring your first boot.

As a general rule, when I budget for a graphics card, I spend somewhere around $200 US. That'll be a good card, but not elite. I'll get at least 3 years of quality performance before the graphics complexity of new games becomes an issue. A $150 price range card will get you at least 2 years of quality performance before the graphics complexity of new games becomes an issue.

Gaming builds;

Integrated graphics do not a gaming build make! Ok it's dead on for games like EU4 (currently dominating the east as Ming). But Fps intensive games require a dedicated solution.

I'm mapping out a new rig specifically for Star citizen,
Cpu i5 4670k
GPu r9 290 (will drop another one in a year after build)
8 gig Ram (will drop another 8 in a year after build)
SSD
Win 7

That's the key components. The R9 290 is still relatively expensive because of the coin miners (don't ask) but with 4 gig onboard ram and it's bang for buck it's the premier choice especially with 4k on the horizon, if you don't want to go absolutely insane. A year from now when it's price has dropped means pairing it will provide a beast of a graphics solution for the next 5-7 years.

I'm hot under the collar for the oculus drop.

It is indeed fast, but it's less reliable than single disks on their own, as one error can kill multiple drives worth of data. it's great for scratch disks in things like video editing.

I am curious though, are you anti-SSD, or was it just not available at the time?.
My computer is 4.5 years old with my first upgrade (video card) about 3 months ago. At the time I had it built, SSDs had only just become commercially available, were very small (suitable only as a boot drive), and they were still pretty damn unreliable.

Right now, I've got other priorities for the money as my start-up is still sucking it all down. But when I get back to a positive business cash-flow, my next upgrade will be an SSD 1TB disk because that's my major performance bottleneck at this time. And, if the prices drop to $250/drive, I'll run 2 1TB drives in a RAID 1 configuration for redundancy.

(I do run back-ups btw.)

That was my take, too.

With that, I'm claiming to be Native American because my family's been here since the early 1600s and I'm 13th generation meaning I have 2048 ancestors in the patrilineal descent from my great, great, etc., etc., etc., grandfather. So surely someone had an Indian spouse.

In fact, I'm going to claim to be part Lakota because I have a physical connection due to having a TDY (temporary duty) post at Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, South Dakota. And when I was there, I could just feel, when I wasn't fucking around with a B-52, my spiritual connection to the land.

The mere fact I have absolutely no proof, and physically have central heterochromia hazel (karyotype blue) eyes, reddish-brown hair (before it turned grey) some very minor freckling and pale white skin (unless I get a farmer tan) means nothing.

No. Not if you have a penis, that is. If you have a penis, then public peeing means that you are a man who is forcing women to see and acknowledge the evil from inside your pants. It's absolutely a sex crime on par with violent rape. Public menstrual bleeding though, that's a good and healthy political statement. Forces the patriarchy to acknowledge your vagina by seeing the menstrual discharge that says "a woman was here and proudly made some vague point symbolized by leaving her blood here".

Maybe if enough women do that, it will magically fix all inequalities in the world. More likely an act of the mentally ill though. Just like public shitters who shit anywhere they are mad at.

I assumed you ran backups. no one runs a (R)AID 0 for long without them :-P

Although with the 10K drives, the improvement might be less than from slower drives. If they're older SATA, the bus might be as much of a limiting factor as seek time.

But that timeline, yeah, i completely see why you didn't use SSD. That was a couple years before Crucial said "fuck this" and gutted the price market on SSDs. The 1TB drives are still hovering around $500, which isn't BAD, but I would like to see them come down in price. I'd also like to see the capacity inch up as well.

Hipster market demand is out there. "I only pass my files on floppies, that's soooo vintage! I wish we could go back to when music would occupy 10 disks, and we had to protect the disks from accidental erasing! 5"1/4 for life! Those floppies were the REAL floppies!"

I was really just there because you had to have two people in a no-lone zone and Ellsworth had just had a drug-bust and was short-staffed on people who were PRP qualified and they needed warm bodies to hold down slots since they lost all their redundancy and my base was within driving distance. So what I really did was to sit in an office reading shitty The Executioner and Mack Bolan spy books while the people who were actually qualified to do the work did the work while I tried not to fall asleep.

But I did get to out to the flight-line once and touch a B-52 all loaded up and ready to go on patrol. And that was pretty cool. And I saw some C-141 tankers, too.

So, for me, it was a waste-of-time-yet-vacation and the only thing I really remember was the day I spent at Mount Rushmore which was totally cool. And if it weren't for Mount Rushmore, I probably wouldn't remember any of it except the regret of not detouring over to Devil's Tower. I still kick myself in the ass for that. But we (there were a few of us) were all tired and just wanted to go home so we took the direct route back and there was always 'later.' But 'later' never came.

But for SJW purposes, I was a Chuck Norris-esque, a barely bridled killing machine ready to launch an nuclear strike at the White, Cishet, MRA, Misogynist Patriarchy in revenge for because... No particular reason... Just because... And only my superior humanity kept me from wiping you all out...

OMG SO CLASSIST AND ABLEIST. I LITERALLY CANNOT EVEN!
Marvelous. Particularly nice approach to take to parody a song that so many people got outraged over.

Sorry: ...a song over which so many people became outraged.
It's good and I'm a fan of Al but I do feel that "Word Crimes" is a missed opportunity to mock the over-reaction to "Blurred Lines", especially since it is called "Word Crimes".
