Funny thing is...years from now, Skep will still be a successful doctor who has helped a lot of people. Honestly, if I were to pick a place where the "line is crossed", I would for sure say that game crosses that line. And how...OUT THERE it looks compared to everything else is something that people really should be thinking about.

On the whiteboard was written the complete personal data of one person who had irritated them: they’d traced back his posting info and had gotten his real name, home address, employment history, phone number, etc., and were sharing that information. Before I interrupted them by starting the class, they were debating whether to teach him a lesson themselves or just to post all of that to 4chan.

Whoa. They’ve already got their own cyberpistols.

Don’t panic, I held them off and suggested they do nothing now, and that maybe there are less drastic ways to deal with obnoxious commenters, but still, it was a bit of a reversal and I learned something that you should all learn, too. These are adults in the 21st century, and they know how to take care of themselves on the internet — so don’t get all patronizing with them, and learn to talk with them as equals. Or else.

For me this colours the debate over going after PZ IRL somewhat. I know this is old old news but the tone of the piece reads to me like a very thinly veiled threat.

In Canada, we have three major parties. The NDP is left wing, the Liberal party is mainly centrist, and the Conservative party has gone from right leaning centrist to more extreme right wing. They all have their drawbacks and their strong points.
The extremists on either side of the issue tend to have as much or more in common with each other that they have with the centrists and bad ideas come from both sides. Mykeru had no point. If he had suggested doing something that actually had some chance of influencing Myers he might have got a better response. What he did was futile and counter-productive. Newspaper ads and the like would most likely have appeared obsessive and harassing and invited some choice mocking. It's not the Pits fault that there is no obvious way to get at Myers. I can only see one approach that has had any effect, and that is what we have always been doing. There is a reason that Myers is lashing out now, and it is not because he is gaining any support. They were just honest (with many of them trying to be helpful) but the low-hanging-fruit kids who've been getting all those 'gold participation medals' got a rude awakening to the quality of their work. But instead of taking on the valid criticisms and trying to improve their shitty blogs, they decided on a scum-route and they went (or planned to go) to 4chan to get doxxing help on the critics.

A couple of days later, Myers walked into class and saw the kids plotting on his white-board on how get people and he thought it was great! He even wrote a blog post on how happy he was that his students were 'all grown up' and going to try to ruin the lives of everyone who criticized their work.

Of course, he took ZERO responsibility for what happened even though he said he wanted them to get real-world feedback AND that he WARNED HIS STUDENTS WE COULD BE ROUGH AND CRITICAL. So I pointed this out. That it was HIS ACTIONS that caused this issue by (a) involving his posters and (b) implying he wanted honest, and possibly 'rough,' feedback.

Therefore, he needed to take some responsibility for the mess. But he refused.

Anyway, when I saw that, I realized that anyone, at anytime, for any reason could be a target if you stepped wrong with him, even if it was doing what he asked and it didn't work out like he wanted. And that he would never take responsibility for any of the harm he, and his cohort, could do to others.

So I left with that being the final straw in a bale of straw of my increasing discontents. And it wasn't the only thing. It was just the last thing. Another biggie with me was I was being influenced a lot by the rough-shod, ill-mannered treatment of others and that behavior was creeping over into other forums and websites. But that's another story.

I really don't remember when it was. And I didn't link it. It was just, really, about as fucked-up a situation as possible.

The best I can do is that I think it was before the blog network was sold to Scientific American. It was certainly before FTB was formed.

I remember this clearly. The students had written something like a real person's private information and a statement about going to 4chan with it. He denounced 4chan and tactics. The student then said he was kidding, (which I believe), and furthermore explained that he understood that "4chan is not your personal army" which is a meme that gets thrown back at people who try to stir shit up like this. So basically, this student WAS a 4channer, and making a joke threat.

It was around the time that he had his students have their own blogs as part of the class. Look for 4chan references, as PZ had probably very little familiarity. Without doxxing myself, I can say it was either in fall 2009 through winter/spring of 2010 (I think).
