Also, I was a bit surprised that FTB didn't have one of their back channel coordinated multi-posts (all referencing each other, of course) denouncing AI, Nugent, the pit and any supporters of the AI release .

Maybe that coordinated response is still being brewed.

I was a regular back in those days, but never one of the main characters in the Pyt asylum by any definition. I still visit pretty regularly, but don't log in when skimming. The Pyt is still the best 'one stop shop' place for documenting all that is broken in FfTB land, not to mention the quality shoops! I miss some of the old regulars, too, but any place is going to have turnover.

The notion of sides is a false dichotomy as everything exists on a single spectrum and is more shades of grey than the absolutes of
black and white. Groupthink may be unavoidable but one would have thought that on atheist / social justice sites it would be less prevalent for those posting on them would have some familiarity both with critical thinking and some of the more common logical fallacies such as argumentum ad populum and ad hominem. Though given how they are frequently employed this may not be true

Not really. Sides usually come about when you have more than one group of people with mutually incompatible goals. To take a page from history, you could say that American racial segregationists and civil rights workers occupied two different sides. Partly this was probably a consequence of different views on race (which might be said to occupy a spectrum) but the more pressing issues were questions like "should black students and white students attend the same schools?". That question is about as binary as it gets, and there were well defined sides formed between the people whose answers were basically "yes" or "no".

Political discussion between opposing sides is often less about honestly hashing out ideas than manipulating people and accomplishing strategic objectives. You might have noticed that the FTBers have been poisoning the well about evil, despicable "slymepitters" are for years, and that when AI released its statement dissociating itself from Myers, all the FTB allies came out swinging with ad homs about how AI, Mehta and the others were in bed with the Slymepit. They aren't doing that because they honestly think AI is the same thing as the slymepit, or that everyone on the slymepit is always wrong about everything. They are hoping to minimize ill feeling from neutrals by trying to associate their critics with people (they hope) the neutrals will dislike. With FTB everything is about whether they get to be in charge of the movement and dictate to everyone else how to be an atheist or skeptic. A lot of the "social justice" they are pushing is a ruse they are using to try to marginalize people who aren't in with them, and cast them in a positive light in the process. They might actually believe in their own principles, but those principals aren't the only thing the schism is about.
