We have had discussions in the past about which atheist/skeptic charities are worth supporting. Many groups have been a disappointment.

People here may want to consider a donation to the Secular Policy Institute. They say they are going to focus on lobbying government and improving media relations, which I think is a worth while goal.

They just received their 501(c)(3) status in October. Sorry, but obviously no 990 forms from them yet. Non-profits in the first year or two of their existence, will tend to have poor 990 forms anyway because they tend to not have a lot of money to do much to start with. But I think we have seen a positive sign that they are shooting for a positive image of atheists, and that (given what we have seen so far from other organizations) is a huge improvement alone here in the US.

Same here. I like most of Dawkins' stuff (although his recent video on the Baldwin Effect is beyond stuoid), but had never heard of Shermer before coming here and still haven't read anything that he's written or watched any talk that he's given. If I have anything close to a "hero" within atheism and skepticism, it would be Oscar Wilde or Alan Turing. Of more recent folks, only Hitchens comes close.

There's this phenomenon that Paul Krugman once observed among extreme partisan conservatives where they seem to believe that their enemies want the exact opposite of what they want. In his observation, because conservatives viewed shrinking the federal government as a goal in and of itself, they seemed to believe that liberals viewed growing the federal government as a goal in itself.

Similarly, as we see with Peezus n' Pals, their zealous, fanatical hatred of guys like Dawkins and Shermer translates into believing their enemies possess an equally zealous, fanatical love for these people.
