A new policy at Purdue University stresses its commitment to free speech regardless of how "unwelcome, disagreeable or even deeply offensive" the language is.

Trustees this month approved a policy modeled on free speech principles first approved by the University of Chicago in January. The move makes Purdue the first public university to adopt the measure, which also is in place at Princeton University.

Trustees Chairman Tom Spurgeon said the principles signal Purdue's commitment to free speech. "A university violates its special mission if it fails to protect free and open debate. When I was a kid, I very occasionally suffered from what I now know to be broadly labelled "Alice in Wonderland Syndrome". This was actually very unpleasant and took the form of some sort of brain-confusion where the furniture and stuff in my room appeared to have a tangible texture (sort of spongy) and to be somehow incorporated into my own head, so that I could even feel it - especially the bookcase for some reason - when I closed my eyes. I'd then have to keep periodically opening my eyes to check that was still an object outside my head.

On one occasion I had to move my bed to the middle of the room and away from the bookcase to prevent it from being incorporated into my head. I never told anyone about this, although I did say to my Mum that I was having 'bad dreams' which was the only way I had of explaining it.

As a young adult I did get a reprise of this twice when under exam stress, although this was less distressing, and actually quite interesting as well as something of a nostalgic throw-back.

I hope that not everyone on the pit is going to say that they had this too and it's normal because I've been thinking I'm such a special snowflake after all these years !!!

As for sluttiness, wouldn't an unmarried woman with a bun in the oven be seen as more slutty than an unmarried woman who's had an abortion with no visible pregnancy? With the one who chooses to have the kid, one look tells you that she's been sexual during the last 9 months, whereas the one who had an abortion, there's no way to know. She could appear to be a virgin for all anyone knows.

I am very pro-choice, but when I thought I was preggers by accident in the 90s (broken condom + late period + went up a pant size for the first time in my life), I very quickly realized that there's no way I personally could have an abortion. Just came to realise that I have one of the whackiest conditions out there, tho 'chronical' - Exploding Head Syndrome.

When I was a kid, I very occasionally suffered from what I now know to be broadly labelled "Alice in Wonderland Syndrome". This was actually very unpleasant and took the form of some sort of brain-confusion where the furniture and stuff in my room appeared to have a tangible texture (sort of spongy) and to be somehow incorporated into my own head, so that I could even feel it - especially the bookcase for some reason - when I closed my eyes. I'd then have to keep periodically opening my eyes to check that was still an object outside my head.

On one occasion I had to move my bed to the middle of the room and away from the bookcase to prevent it from being incorporated into my head. I never told anyone about this, although I did say to my Mum that I was having 'bad dreams' which was the only way I had of explaining it.

As a young adult I did get a reprise of this twice when under exam stress, although this was less distressing, and actually quite interesting as well as something of a nostalgic throw-back.

I hope that not everyone on the pit is going to say that they had this too and it's normal because I've been thinking I'm such a special snowflake after all these years !!!

That is really interesting. When I am sick I sometimes lay in bed in a dream-like state and the bed sheets and covers have such a great amount of texture that I feel myself falling into the gaps between the threads. It feels like I am in some kind of miniature submarine and in float in and through the texture on the covers. This lasts for 15 minutes.... I suspect it is present when I have some kind of fever.
