Don't buy a cordless drill. They're expensive and the batteries don't last. A good old fashion drill with a cord is cheap and does the job. Another tip is to put a little piece of scotch tape over the spot your going to drill or screw. It keeps the veneer from cracking.

No, that's nonsense. Cordless drills are not expensive any more, and modern Li-Ion batteries last ages. Problem with 230V drills is you almost certainly need an extension wire, putting most of the garden out of reach, and they're generally way heavier, making them awkward for screwing purposes.

Pao's job was to monetize Reddit. The problem is that Reddit doesn't actually do anything but host chat rooms and generate hundreds-of-millions of page views, so it's opportunities are limited. And, of course, Pao knew nothing of how to monetize something like Reddit.

They really needed to hire someone from Google or some other tech-web firm that had experience in monetization and could successfully increase monetization without harming traffic. But they didn't.

Instead they hired a 'celebrity,' second-tier venture capitalist who was actually babied and got preferential treatment at her old job, spent much of her time trying to ruin the careers (sometimes successfully) of other women at the firm and then turned around and attacked them like the snake she is all while wearing the garb of feminism...

It's funny how that trial has turned around and bit her in the ass. And how the fiasco at Reddit has show Conde Nast really doesn't have a clue now and didn't have a clue when they bought it.

I beg to differ. I have an Ikea table that must have been designed by Phil's hip surgeon. The entire assembly went fine until the last step. In earlier steps, all screws went properly into their threaded holes. The last step's screws though, were pointy-tipped and needed to be forcibly torqued into tiny pilot holes. I'm not making a size joke here. I'm going to have to call a handyman guy I know to finish it one of these days. It's all wobbly right now. Some of Ikea's unassembled stuff is crap. I'm not a fan.

For those who were worried, I'm alive. I've been busy these past few days and still have to get caught up on the Pit.

I went for a X-ray yesterday so I could finally see what they put in my hip so far. The radiologist's opinion is that the screws are jotting out too much, messing with the soft tissue and causing the abnormal amount of pain I'm still feeling. I'll have to see with the surgeon.

Couldn't disagree more. The ability of my cordless drill to reach into difficult spaces, and/or places far from an electrical outlet (e.g., rooftop), has made me a complete convert. Plus, it doubles as a screwdriver / socket driver / etc. Best tool I ever bought.

I have a Milwaukee 18 volt cordless and it's a beast & the batteries last. I do a lot of work where there's no power, so cordless is a must. I also have the Milwaukee SawzAll, which takes the same batteries, and that's a magnificent tool to have around.

Cordless circular saws suck, however.

For casual use around the house, a simple corded drill (used is better, as they were built sturdier back when) is fine. Or one of those cordless stick ones for light duty.

Cordless circular saws suck, however.

I got one of those, a reciprocating saw, a drill, and a utility light with battery in one package for cheap.
The circular saw has been handy for trimming shingles, roofline, making shallow cuts in walls and other minor tasks.
Not much power, and a small diameter blade, but still comes in handy. Lightweight, saves having to haul cord around and is adequate for light tasks.
I had it for a while before I got any use out of it but it paid for itself so far and still works! 4/5 :drool:

That does seem more reasonable for a new endeavor than attempting to hold a 3-day conference. However...

1) The kickstarter raised $13,743 with the writeup on fundraising goals saying:

Base Goal: $13,000

Reaching this goal would cover costs for our venue for a conference running Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, including equipment rental and basic refreshments like water and coffee. It would allow us to bring in six to seven speakers from outside the Twin Cities to share their expertise and draw on local activists for the rest, with major sessions recorded to be shared on YouTube after the conference. It would also cover the costs of raising conference funding through Kickstarter.

Donors might not have exactly been promised a 3-day conference, but that was the implication.

2) The ticket sales page at MNatheists.org doesn't exactly give the dates of the conference, but it says "Set aside August 21-23", & selecting "Conference Registration" leads to a page that includes this line: "We will welcome walk-in conference attendees on August 21-23."

Oddly, clicking on the Shopping Bag (as if to pay for conference registration) without having entered a name for the badge & an email address, the "cart" page shows me that my badge name will be [specific woman's name that's not mine] and the associated email is [an email address that's not mine but does match the specific woman's name on the badge]. Also, it shows me the dietary choices I've made...except I haven't. Hopefully that's just a one-off & they aren't inadvertently displaying a specific person's name & address (maybe the last person to purchase registration at that site?) to anyone who happens by. :(

Anyway, my point in (1) & (2) is that there appears to have been, & be, a promise to donors & ticket-purchasers that the conference will be 3 days long, if they don't deliver what they've been promising (even if 1 day is more realistic) they might end up with frustrated payers, & potentially be seen as violating an implied contractual arrangement.

Never built an Ikea anything before, but have built the walmart cheap products (bookshelves mostly). The screws in that look like they are resting on a triangular piece that has the legs attached to it, probably to give it more strength to keep them under the table rather than angling in any direction. Probably a powered tool would work (I normally use a drill for it). You can also remover the screws, and pretrial the hole with a drill several sizes smaller than the screw, and power the screws into the hole. Pre drilling usually works for most things, especially if it's a situation where the screws can crack the wood (not this particular case, but I've seen and done others).

I don't have a drill, but rather than go out and buy one, I'm just going to pay $25 and do it the lazy way where all I have to do is answer the door, pay, and say thanks. As easy as getting a pizza. :)

Don't buy a cordless drill. They're expensive and the batteries don't last. A good old fashion drill with a cord is cheap and does the job. Another tip is to put a little piece of scotch tape over the spot your going to drill or screw. It keeps the veneer from cracking.
