My copy is The Quran Translation (link to Amazon) by Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Although, you can read the book online and there are multiple sites to choose from such as this one here and there are sites with multiple translations plus including Arabic such as this one here or this one here or the one I find I use the most here

To make any sense out of reading the Quran you need to have some commentary for context because of the sort of disorganized assembly (not in logical or chronological order), and because a fair amount is lunatic meta poetry.
The hadiths, especially the Bukhari collection are important to the Sunni and are pretty much as important as the Quran and worth a read too.
Thanks but I need a book only way I can really read. Kindle works too.

Because if you had, those victims that followed on after you might not have been a victim.Anyone who asks “why didn’t you go to the police?” doesn’t know a damn thing about sexual assault, and can be safely ignored.
Of course I must caveat that by stating I am not talking about the sort of 'rape' where you thought your fee feez were hurt the morning after you deliberately downed 10 shots with 5 pints of snake-bite while trying to hit on the cute guy from your gender studies lecture. That sort of 'rape' I can well see people not wanting to bother with such little details like the police. Far better to crow about it on social media for your victim points.

The first thing I say to people who have been raped is have you gone to the police. Or, as a variant, go to the police. From the police you can get access to counselling, key health services, shelters, etc. They're really capable and this is kind of why we have police. There are a significant amount of reasons though why you wouldn't want to go to the police though or feel that the police could help. Fair enough.
I am not 100% sure of the logic in not going to the police and then going on social media though.

I searched for "Deen" "in the past week" on Reddit, to see how public opinion is going.
Apparently Kink.com has fired James Deen, as-did some acronym I'm not familiar with. He writes a column, which has been dropped from some place. Girls at a sex-positive dildo store have removed his dick from the dick shelf.
A couple other porn women have come forward with stories. There's a 'he slapped me hard several times in a row during a kink.com shoot/ OMG I was conflicted because I wanted to seem professional on the set' and a 'he came up behind me at a sink, pushed his dick at my butt & told me he'd fuck me later if I ever want/ acted entitled to my body'. (I noticed both accusations include an actual physical component, and a reaction in the accuser's own mind. The meaning of what he's accused of doing is about-equal in harm/ to the actual physical act. Kinda like saying, "He shot me in the chest & the worst part was I think the ER staff silently judged how I looked in the hospital gown.")
The most pit-worthy thing on reddit-- is that someone named Gaby Dunn claims she knows Stoya's accusation to be part of the "1%" of false rape allegations, but refuses to speak out in her friend Deen's defense, because doing-so would harm real rape victims by making it seem like their claims are false-too. "Believe the women" is more important than whether they're lying:

This is exactly what religions do. "Lying for SocJus" isn't much better than "lying for Jesus" (or "for Allah").
I don't know whether Deen is guilty or not (although Dunn's story is a huge red flag against the accusation made towards him, assuming that Dunn is telling the truth), but what is pretty sure is that people like Gaby Dunn are willing to sacrifice someone's freedom or reputation just to further an idea.
No accusation of any crime should be blindly "believed". Accusations should be taken seriously and not easily dismissed, no matter who is doing them, but they should also be verified and checked against evidence.

Perhaps not outright horror, but Jonathan L Howard's Johanens Cabal books are amazing. Johannes Cabal the Necromancer is the first one. And if you're familiar with Lovecraft (most specifically The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath) the third book, The Fear Institute, is pure magic.H. Algernon Blackwood's weird fiction.
There's a collection of Robert E Howard's horror fiction which contains some really good stories (Pigeons From Hell for instance).
A Pleasing Terror, which is a definitive collection of M. R. James' ghost stories.
The Keep by F. Paul Wilson.
Ambrose Bierce's ghost/horror stories are well worth reading.
And that's about what I can think of off the top of my head. Check out the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast. They started out doing all the Lovecraft stories, and have since moved on to cover other weird fiction (a story per episode usually). Lots of good suggestions there.

James Deen is a clear case of "you knew I was a scorpion when you invited me into your house".
It is literally the dude's =job= to act "rapey". It's his specialty.
He is the walking embodiment of what today's young women want-- when they say they want a guy who will 'take charge' and not tiptoe around being sexually assertive. He'll assume the awkward social risk & potential blame-- for introducing slightly kinky stuff... so the girl doesn't have to outright ask for it.
The goony boyfriend guy in Lena Dunham's "Girls" comes close, but he's more-clearly an actor playing a role. Deen's brand extends to his twitter persona, his public appearances. And his porn performances trade on the authenticity of being a bit amateurish, rather than precisely choreographed.
Many women Demand a Charlie-Sheen-For-Millenials, and Deen is getting burned for Supplying it.
Meanwhile, PZ has chosen to joust a wonderful windmill. Check out the twitter feed of the pro-trump anti-"sodomite" black dude who tweets about which celebrity chefs he'd like to ride in a monster truck with. PZ disapproves: https://twitter.com/doloyeung

Re: Happy 3rd Pit Birthday!
Nonsense, Steersman. An arbitrary group of people over a few centuries don't make a collective. You can say that for example a nation's current voters have a collective responsibility (and guilt) for actions done in their name, for example. Or you can say that people in the first world country today form a collective which profits from current and former exploitation of a third world country and thus have a responsibility of some kind towards that country. I'm not arguing for that case, just pointing out a few examples where the concept is potentially applicable. It's also applicable for such things as the collective of people who voted for, accepted and didn't do anything against the Nazis. You cannot however hold Anna, 23, from Estonia responsible for slavery in Lousiana 1846. This is just nuts.Steersman wrote:That you “find” it “highly racist” really doesn’t qualify as a proof that it is. And you might note that the concept has some credibility, starting with WikipediaKirbmarc wrote:Thanks for putting this into words. And to answer to Steersman: it's the concept of collective responsibility applied to a race that I find highly racist. The idea that only because someone has a specific set of biological features then they share some kind of moral guilt for what other people with the same set of features have done is, quite frankly, idiotic.Old_ones wrote:
White folks have been "in the drivers seat" in Europe for the last couple millennia, and they successfully colonization more of the globe starting a few centuries ago. White folks have never been "in the drivers seat" in China or Japan, and yet the Japanese invasion of China (and all the atrocities that came with it) were still manifest. Do the Japanese also need a coach? Would it be racist to suggest this?
An article which links to one in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP) which has this:Collective responsibility also known as collective guilt is a concept in which individuals are responsible for other people's actions by tolerating, ignoring, or harboring them, without actively collaborating in these actions.[...]The notion of collective responsibility, like that of personal responsibility and shared responsibility, refers to both the causal responsibility of moral agents for harm in the world and the blameworthiness that we ascribe to them for having caused such harm. Hence, it is, like its two more purely individualistic counterparts, almost always a notion of moral, rather than purely causal, responsibility. But, unlike its two more purely individualistic counterparts, it does not associate either causal responsibility or blameworthiness with discrete individuals or locate the source of moral responsibility in the free will of individual moral agents. Instead, it associates both causal responsibility and blameworthiness with groups and locates the source of moral responsibility in the collective actions taken by these groups understood as collectives.

I considered not responding because this comes close to doxxing myself, but this is bullshit. I am a descendent of a Baltic German family, and I do have a "von" in my name. My grandfather and his young family came to Australia during WWII after being conscripted into the German military. They arrived with very little. Later, after my grandmother died, my youngest uncle returned to live with a (poor) family friend near Munich, and my cousins still live in the south west. In Germany, they would be lower middle class, by Australian standards. They do okay, but there's certainly no family fortune to draw on. They get a lot of crap because of their name, to the point where they often leave out the "von" when doing things like ordering pizza.Aneris wrote:It's even more inane than you both suspect: Europe was a strongly class-based society and that never disappeared altogether. Not even today. It was further structured by the estates (translator tells me that's the name in English): clerics, nobilty and commoners. There are still elites were nobility names frequently pop up, which in German is apparent by the “von”. Still today they're hardly working class people.
In Australia, no one gives a fuck because no one understands what the title meant, so I didn't experience that. My cousins' experiences, however, seems very close to the way all whites are blamed for past sins, and as a result, neither cousin seems particularly proud of their family history. I think that's rather sad as we can trace our linage back to the 13th century, and a few of my ancestors, while not exactly famous by any means, had quite interesting lives.
Having said that, it would be standard practice among titled Germans to not include the "von" when introducing yourself as it's understood. The Baltic German Knighthoods still exist as a charity organisation now, and I've had the opportunity to attend a couple of their annual balls. While it's true that some of the people there come from families that successfully maintained a fortune through the Russian Revolution and WWII, many didn't and are therefore spread through all classes of life; particularly for those that left Europe.

Every one of my classical archaeology lectures was in Latin 1 in the glorious quad. But everyday I had to walk thru engineering to get to Redfern Station. The sad banal structures were like slaves whispering that I wasn't really a god.Couch wrote:Still sore about that Brive? "The other side" is being slowly refurbished. Of course it had to wait for the Law School to be constructed.

And that's the immigrant culture that feminists are backing and protecting in a nutshell. Way to go, feminists, defending a real life actual patriarchy! Who needs that silly freedom and equality stuff that women of the past fought long and hard for in modern countries? We've come a long way, baby!windy wrote:On the plus side, if Sweden gets Islamised, it will be much easier to integrate asylum seekers into Swedish society.Kirbmarc wrote:Sweden is SJW country. Translation::bjarte:A group of 30 men tried to force their way into a room and threatened to rape a woman and to kill her teenage son.
The dramatic incident took place at an asylum accommodation in Nora at 22 o'clock on Wednesday.
According to police, the men believed that the single woman committed a crime by living in Sweden without a man and should therefore be punished.

It's one of those movies that's highly enjoyable so long as you don't think too hard about it.Sunder wrote:The soundtrack is fantastic but I'm still trying to decide if I liked the movie or not.rayshul wrote:I wanna see It Follows real bad.

I also really enjoy John Wyndham. He was way ahead of his time in his fascination with the collapse of society and in finding new ways to end the world, and I think 28 Days Later probably owe the Wyndham estate some royalties.Keating wrote:Day of the Triffids is my favourite book, and it's in the same vein.
Having said that, there's always this sense that the group most tragically affected by his various apocalypses were the upper middle class. Remember when the triffids moved into Islington and practically ruined it overnight with their aimless slouching about and loud drumming?

Since the Triffids are a plant-kin minority, this should be conceived as punching up, even if the punched are blind.Cnutella wrote:I also really enjoy John Wyndham. There's a writer called Peter Cannon who writes some extremely good parody in an HP Lovecraft style - he wrote a short story called Tender Is The Night-Gaunt that lampoons both F Scott Fitzgerald and the Plateau of Leng quite effectively. Also worth a look are his PG Wodehouse-inspired Scream For Jeeves short stories.TedDahlberg wrote:Perhaps not outright horror, but Jonathan L Howard's Johanens Cabal books are amazing. Johannes Cabal the Necromancer is the first one. And if you're familiar with Lovecraft (most specifically The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath) the third book, The Fear Institute, is pure magic.H. Korban wrote:Random question for Pitlers: are there some nice horror books or movies you can recommend? I have read most "standard" horror fiction, and now am looking for some off-beat horror. As for movies, I am sad to say that I have seen most "good" horror flicks and even worked my way through "B" grade movies. Perhaps I should next look at foreign (i.e. non-English) horror movies. Any recommendations?
Re: Happy 3rd Pit Birthday!
My point is that your collective guilt standard becomes absurd if applied consistently. If you assign moral responsibility by race, you are literally asking everyone to accept some responsibility for some atrocity in their race's history. Congratulations, you've just resurrected original sin.Steersman wrote: As for what is largely a boat load of red herrings about what members of other races have done, that they too are guilty of similar crimes hardly precludes expecting “white folks” – who Old_ones acknowledges have been "in the driver’s seat in Europe for the last couple millennia, and [who] successfully [colonized] more of the globe ….” – to accept some degree of moral, or collective responsibility for their own.
Moreover, the absurdity only gets worse when you think of specific implications of the things you'd be asking people to take responsibility for. Black people in Africa sold other black people to Dutch slavers, so black people better accept responsibility for American slavery. The Chinese and Japanese are both considered to be of the Asian race, so while it was the Japanese who invaded the Chinese in World War 2, those Chinese better accept responsibility. After all the atrocities at Nanking were perpetrated by Asians, and Chinese are just as Asian as the Japanese.
As Aneris already pointed out, race is an overly broad categorization for assigning collective guilt.

A usual, Steerzo gets annoying just by playing the contrarian card. And as with his "nigger/cunt" stuff, he probably won't let go in a hurry on the racial guilt subject.

I think his analysis of the video game market is just wrong. Video game companies are very happy to have found a way to make games for different market segments. Assuming there is no difference in how males and females want to experience games is just wrong.comhcinc wrote:So Collegehumor has a series called "Adam Ruined Everything". So in tomorrow's episode they are tackling....dum,dum, dum!.....Why People Think Video Games are for Just for Boys. The small bit they have released does not look very promising but I am willing to hold judgment until I have seen the entire show.

Obviously, this is just my personal experience, but my wife is super happy to sit up in bed and play a puzzle style game like candy crush for hours and hours. I hate that kind of game. I want to shoot something or drive something or fly something.
Games that simulate reality tend to be male style games. This means they need more intensive computing and graphics. The market naturally falls into to camps based on gender preference. People come to think that boys play video games because they need more complex systems to play on. When males play video games it requires the use of the TV or a full size computer. It is just more obvious and dramatic.
My wife has no desire to have a "better" game to play. She likes her little tablet and her puzzle style games. There is nothing wrong with this. This is just what she likes.
PS - Is it just me, but is it only gay men who like to play Candy Crush? Discuss.
