I tried watching it and almost fell asleep in the middle of the first episode. But I hear only good things about it, so I'll give it another try.

I finally saw Spectre and was slightly disappointed. It's way too much of a typical Bond movie. I have to admit that of all the Daniel Craig ones, Casino Royale remains the best (and the best Bond movie in general, all considered).

The same thing happened to me, I just couldn't get into it. With all the positive reviews it's gotten I too am willing to give it another try the only limiting factor being time. I'm kind of backed up with TV series for the next 6 months.

I hated Spectre, well, not really hated it, more of a disappointed feeling. It's not a film I'll ever watch again.

Spy....now there's an awesome non-James Bond movie :D

I recently saw Kingsman: The Secret Service, which was good for this genre. It's however more in the lighter tradition of spy movies, with gadgetry, secret hideouts, snazzy suits. The lighter take is subverted with comic gory violence. The fighting scenes were great. Not Jackie Chan level choreography, but filming, editing and ingenuity make up for it. It bears highlighting this quote, as it perfectly encapsulates the insanity of Peezus and his dwindling flock. This is such a stupid, over-the-top lie, that I really wonder who he is trying to fool with this nonsense. Not even Nerd of Redhead can actually believe this. This is what eventually happens when a character like PZ interacts for too long in an environment where his ideas (such as they are) can't be challenged. He's gotten less & less realistic feedback over time & it shows. He's done less & less double-checking before hitting "enter" until he's just shitting out wildly distorted fantasy with no relation to reality.

He has no fear that reality will intrude into his echo chamber because it rarely does, & hasn't since Nuge invested his time & inhuman patience. I don't think he feels the shame a reasonable person would after typing shit like that, knowing that people familiar with the facts would be reading it. He would've years ago, but he's not part of that world anymore.

Disagreers have all been distorted into funhouse mirror caricatures so that he no longer has to engage with them. There are two things that I've always loved about this clip. First, from 2:15 to a bit after 3:00, you get the classic non-admission by Rebecca Watson that she did not prepare (as usual) and is basing her "talk" on something that has occurred to her in the last 24 hours. Second, watch Richard Dawkins during this clip and the other clips from later in this panel and then the Q&A session. He doesn't come right out and roll his eyes, but does everything short of that when Watson is speaking. It is clear that he had no respect for her by the end of this panel, which helps explain "Dear Muslima," which I believe was only a few days later.

Re your reference above, I looked for the post... interesting, thoughtful self-reflection and shows a bit of the damage of politics on a person. (e.g. I don't want to identify with an oppressor...) I've been reading lately about retransitioning - when someone decides they actually aren't transgender after all.

I haven't read anything about detransitioning but I could sure see it happening especially to those that don't have "passing privilege" or, in the words of Melody Hensley, being "visibly trans". Sure, it starts out as a good idea, a journey with a very real destination but sometimes, that destination isn't all it's cracked up to be when you fail to blend in with the locals, so to speak.

No doubt it's a tough life that's made even more complicated by arguing that gender is a social construct and then having to deal with responses that ask...Why be trans then ? Why is it so important that we ( as in the general public ) see you as trying to advertise something that you (most likely ) don't have.

Deep down, the trans* have to know that, even though they argue gender and gender expression are social constructs the rest of the world is going to default to sex when picking someone to have a romantic relationship with.

I didn't follow the politics of this before, but the only people I recall making snide and nasty comments against Dawkins in particular were fanatic conservative religionists. Since then people that claim to be liberal and secular have been making worse, and doing it from the lowly grade Z blogger to news outlets I had previously had some respect for.
The PZ/ Becky clique I think did more harm to the acceptance of atheism in the US than the goofy Xtian fundamentalists could even hope for. PZ and Richard Carrier have some of the most prominent articles on Conservapedia that make scurrilous claims against atheists.
If there is such a thing as a cause for atheism/secularism, the best thing that PZ and the rest of the baboons could do for it is convert to Fundamentalist Xtianity or Islam.

When the radical feminists saw all the money to be had at atheist/skeptic conventions they saw a useful tool for their cause. As predicted then, they tried to push out the 'leadership' - read big names in the atheist world because big book sales and big success - and replace it with their own. That is, replace merit and accomplishment with what? - people with flourescent hair and a list of pronouns and trigger warnings and a hatred of dictionaries. Merit and ability was replaced with low-achieving non-original group thinkers. People of low-bandwidth because long-repetitive phrases used over and over again have high compressibility.
