It is not like Warhammer hates women.... it is just the women don't like to play toy soldier games.

White folks have never been "in the drivers seat" in China or Japan, and yet the Japanese invasion of China (and all the atrocities that came with it) were still manifest. Do the Japanese also need a coach? Would it be racist to suggest this?
Thanks for putting this into words. And to answer to Steersman: it's the concept of collective responsibility applied to a race that I find highly racist. The idea that only because someone has a specific set of biological features then they share some kind of moral guilt for what other people with the same set of features have done is, quite frankly, idiotic.
That you “find” it “highly racist” really doesn’t qualify as a proof that it is. And you might note that the concept has some credibility, starting with Wikipedia
Collective responsibility also known as collective guilt is a concept in which individuals are responsible for other people's actions by tolerating, ignoring, or harboring them, without actively collaborating in these actions.
Sometimes, I really wonder if you actually read either the posts you respond to or the sources you quote. In this case, you have either ignored the second half of the wikipedia sentence you have quoted or you ignored Kirbmarc's second paragraph, which you did not quote. The point is that there is no rational sense in which you can say that a person living today has tolerated, ignored or harbored the actions of other, now centuries dead, individuals, merely by sharing an approximately similar melanin level.

As the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, which you also quoted, notes, the concept is fairly controversial within philosophy and even its proponents seem to agree that it is not appropriate in all situations. Thus, it would appear to be up to you to demonstrate why it is appropriate in this situation, Kirbmarc and Old_ones have given a pretty good explanation why they do not think it is.

As for me, I would suggest that the concept can be useful, but only when there is some nexus between the actions for which responsibility is to be assigned and the defining characteristics of the group. Thus, it was reasonable to assign collective responsibility to the German people for the actions taken in their name, by their government in WWII, during and shortly after the war. As most Germans today were not even alive then, doing so now seems less sensible and indeed animosity towards Germans, even from my Jewish friends, has lessened considerably over time. Even that has limitation as well, as the already mentioned Oskar Schindler would seem an inappropriate target for such collective guild, nor would it be appropriate to apply to Ltc. Harold Schrier. Really, it is only appropriate toward Germans living in Germany during WWII and who did not take some sort of action to object to the regime.

This is why several people have taken great pains to point out that slavery is not a uniquely European institution, it has been common throughout the world whenever one group of people held significant power over another, as has been displacing and at times destroying groups of people who occupied land that another group desired. Thus, why should having participated in what was common practice at that time, cause guilt to attach to all who share some arbitrary biological characteristic with the participants?

In a more specific case, all of my ancestors came to America in the early 20th century. At the time when slavery was an institution in this country, as well as when the Indians died off due to the influx of white diseases and later when they were forcibly resettled, my ancestors were the second-class subjects in another part of the world, subject to a host of legal and social barriers designed to keep them down. In what way do I share guilt or responsibility for those actions? Merely because my skin tone is similar? Are my cousins of a darker complexion exempt?

I think you make some good points. This episode seems to be called "Adam Ruins Summer" so I don't know much more we are going to get about video games in this episode, but I am still waiting to form an opinion until I see the whole show.

Btw if you get Tru TV (and you probably do just not very many reasons to watch) you (this is the you as in everyone here) should check the show out. Overall it's a great show and even if I end up disagreeing with this bit group think is not a condition for me liking a show.

Steersman wrote: As for what is largely a boat load of red herrings about what members of other races have done, that they too are guilty of similar crimes hardly precludes expecting “white folks” – who Old_ones acknowledges have been "in the driver’s seat in Europe for the last couple millennia, and [who] successfully [colonized] more of the globe ….” – to accept some degree of moral, or collective responsibility for their own.
My point is that your collective guilt standard becomes absurd if applied consistently. If you assign moral responsibility by race, you are literally asking everyone to accept some responsibility for some atrocity in their race's history. Congratulations, you've just resurrected original sin.

Moreover, the absurdity only gets worse when you think of specific implications of the things you'd be asking people to take responsibility for. Black people in Africa sold other black people to Dutch slavers, so black people better accept responsibility for American slavery. The Chinese and Japanese are both considered to be of the Asian race, so while it was the Japanese who invaded the Chinese in World War 2, those Chinese better accept responsibility. After all the atrocities at Nanking were perpetrated by Asians, and Chinese are just as Asian as the Japanese.

As Aneris already pointed out, race is an overly broad categorization for assigning collective guilt.
It's just a modern-day blood libel by people who are fundamentally ignorant of human nature and history. Take the US, always talking peace, freedom and democracy. Yet we've destabilized and over-thrown multiple democracies and, in our 239 year history as a sovreign nation, have been in some kind of war or armed conflict (many of them have been relatively minor, so don't make it into more than it is) for 222 of them (93%).

Not all of them were our fault. And, like I said, many of them were relatively minor dust-ups. But we do fight, and bully the shit out of people, a lot.

I don't mind reading views that I disagree with. But I really hate people being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. It's just political games at that point, something I have little interest in.

He is the walking embodiment of what today's young women want-- when they say they want a guy who will 'take charge' and not tiptoe around being sexually assertive. He'll assume the awkward social risk & potential blame-- for introducing slightly kinky stuff... so the girl doesn't have to outright ask for it.

The goony boyfriend guy in Lena Dunham's "Girls" comes close, but he's more-clearly an actor playing a role. Deen's brand extends to his twitter persona, his public appearances. And his porn performances trade on the authenticity of being a bit amateurish, rather than precisely choreographed.

Many women Demand a Charlie-Sheen-For-Millenials, and Deen is getting burned for Supplying it.

Meanwhile, PZ has chosen to joust a wonderful windmill. Check out the twitter feed of the pro-trump anti-"sodomite" black dude who tweets about which celebrity chefs he'd like to ride in a monster truck with. PZ disapproves: https://twitter.com/doloyeung
That's my take on it as well. What probably happened, I think is something happened where Deen was no longer been part of the in-group, so what was once sexy and edgy is now rapey and creepy. I expect more accusations to come flying out of the woodwork.

So in tomorrow's episode they are tackling....dum,dum, dum!.....Why People Think Video Games are for Just for Boys. The small bit they have released does not look very promising but I am willing to hold judgment until I have seen the entire show.

These are the clowns that did the SJW 'What if 1-in-5 were Killed by Bears' video. That video, like this one, was just pure SJW talking points without a basis in the way things are.

For example, women on 52% of gaming consoles. Women are 48% of gaming. It's 30-years later and what Nintendo did in 1985 is irrelevant to today's gaming market.

I did think it was funny when he brought up the women developers, including Roberta Williams. Roberta wasn't a solo act. The Company was founded by Ken and Roberta Williams, both of whom wrote the games in the early days. Eventually they became a big developer and publisher and had a 1,000 people.

They weren't driven out by 'guy gamers' or Nintendo's marketing strategy. They were successful for quite some time after the big crash and they were bought out in 1996. Roberta retired from video game development in 1999. Nobody forced her out and she is considered one of the Top-10 Most Influential Video Game developers of all time.

Great movie!

Another low-budget but hi-impact scifi/horror/comedy movie I saw recently, which I also strongly recommend, is Attack the Block. It's only barely in English, to boot!

King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! (1990)
King's Quest 1: Quest for the Crown (Remake) (1990)

King's Quest: Mask of Eternity (1998)
Odd Manor (2014) (I didn't know this had been released until just now. I didn't even hear of it.)
I played the KQ series through VI. Then I got tired of adventure games which had been taken over by Myst and shitty Myst clones and was dying from too many shoddy games and market saturation.

I just did a mini-filmfest of

THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951)
THE THING (1982)
THE THING (2011)

I also read the short story they're based on, Who Goes There? to boot.

John Carpenter's '82 effort is the best by far. Despite being done entirely 'old-school', its special effects outshine (out-gross-out?) the CGI of the 2011 version.

The animal control officer said the dog did not have any injury... even the small hairs on the muzzle were not harmed. I wonder if she really just made a loop of duct tape with tape on the back and front..... and then just slipped the tape loop over the dog's muzzle.

What a fucking weirdo. Who's doing the shoveling? If I'm shoveling or mowing the lawn or something and some asshole flies his drone up to me, I'm swatting at it or keeping it.

I'm hoping that his wife is the one braving the cold...
I just checked FfTB, and he has an article about it. It is Mary, his wife. She has it rough. I mean, we only have to see him here and there on the internet. She has to live with him!

It Follows is an interesting failure. Great concept, but the movie falls apart at the end .when they violate the rules they set up earlier.

More of a horror comedy, but Las Brujas de Zugarrmurdi was a lot of fun. The bad English translation is Witching and Bitching.

Luckily for them, SJWs tell everybody not to go to the police.

Their policy is - always give a rapist a break.
Flip side of the coin: killing the victim to be sure they DON'T go to the police.
Consistent with the "flip side" concept, assume that both arguments with regard to "teach men not to rape" have merit: that there are things that women can do to reduce the odds of being raped and/but even talking about these things can increase self-blame in victims of rape. It then becomes a case of solving two simultaneous equations to find the optimal amount of rape-prevention training. Very straight-forward for those who can do math.

Now try even suggesting the above in a meeting.

He can't handle youtube comment sections. He also can't handle the ratings being displayed. I think the thumbs up and down still work, but only PZ sees them when logged in.

That explains it. My brain tried to make sense of it by thinking you meant he can't handle all the comment section clean-up/mopping-up that an open comment section would require. The clean-up being: removing comments and banning people.

That's fucking hilarious. He's playing with his new thousand-dollar toy while Trophy Wife shovels the sidewalk. Maybe this is what Peezus means by wanting to dismantle gender norms. I've had exes who would nag me if I watched sports while they were doing dishes or cooking dinner, etc.

As for movies, I am sad to say that I have seen most "good" horror flicks and even worked my way through "B" grade movies. Perhaps I should next look at foreign (i.e. non-English) horror movies. Any recommendations?
Perhaps not outright horror, but Jonathan L Howard's Johanens Cabal books are amazing. Johannes Cabal the Necromancer is the first one. And if you're familiar with Lovecraft (most specifically The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath) the third book, The Fear Institute, is pure magic.

Algernon Blackwood's weird fiction.

There's a collection of Robert E Howard's horror fiction which contains some really good stories (Pigeons From Hell for instance).

A Pleasing Terror, which is a definitive collection of M. R. James' ghost stories.

The Keep by F. Paul Wilson.

Ambrose Bierce's ghost/horror stories are well worth reading.

And that's about what I can think of off the top of my head. Check out the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast. They started out doing all the Lovecraft stories, and have since moved on to cover other weird fiction (a story per episode usually). Lots of good suggestions there.
If you want something that's truly off the beaten path, you should try the ghost comedies by Manning Coles: Brief Candles, Come and Go, Happy Returns, and The Far Traveller. Absolutely charming.

According to Amazon they have all been reprinted fairly recently, which is a good thing since they used to be damn near impossible to find.

And while I'm on the topic of Manning Coles (actually Adelaide Frances Oke Manning and Cyril Henry Coles), the first two Tommy Hambledon novels Drink to Yesterday and a Toast to Tomorrow are top notch espionage fiction.

I was just talking to a friend on the phone. Speaker phone.

And instead of picking up the phone and talking into the speaker I spent about 2 minutes talking directly into my coffee cup.

You won't catch PZ doing any of that nasty, oppressive, 'beneficial sexism'. Anyways, Mary's biologically female body is just as strong as a biologically male body. There's no difference other than social construct! Anyone who says otherwise must be transphobic and misosoupogynistical. What biologist would host the male/female social construct idea on his website, unchallenged, if it weren't true?

How 'bout this for a bit of cultural appropriation:

The Gayageum is apparently a traditional Korean instrument. She not only plays Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, but also John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, BB King and Joe Walsh on it.

What's that mean? Google translate recognizes it as German but won't give me a translation. I think I get the bann and the fuhrer parts, but what is Sturm?

The animal control officer said the dog did not have any injury... even the small hairs on the muzzle were not harmed. I wonder if she really just made a loop of duct tape with tape on the back and front..... and then just slipped the tape loop over the dog's muzzle.
Yeah, it's ridiculous and I'm sure it'll be thrown out. The Animal Control officers were very clear that her dogs were very well taken care of -- chipped, had their shots, well-fed, etc.

This is why I post nothing beyond pure bland pablum on social media. Everyone takes offense over nothings and blows them into You Are Worse Than Hitler!!!!
