Usually they go through the ear canal. Here is a video of laser stapedotomy. http://www.californiaearinstitute.com/s ... dotomy.php. Here is a description of the standard approach: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/2094916-technique.Guest_9b45bb7a wrote:Sorry to butt in. I have a question for the medically minded members here. I have Otosclerosis, as the result of which I am pretty much completely deaf in one ear. I can have surgery known as a Stapedotomy, but I can't quite find out how it is done. I understand what the procedure is, the risk, and the odds of a favourable outcome. What I've been trying to find out is how they would go in. Is it done through the ear canal, or do they drill a hole in the skull? It doesn't really have any influence on my decision regarding the surgery, I'm just curious and wondered if Skep or Screwtape might know (please don't go to any trouble finding out if you don't know off the top of your head). My apologies if this is too cheeky.

Ask your surgeon what the approach will be. It is a relatively quick procedure, without a lot of pain. It is often done under local anesthetic, so prepare for some nasty sounds!!!

The SJWs are the best gift to the right-wing parties everywhere. The extreme right-wing can call them part of leftist brainwashing and not look crazy, the normal right-wing and the centre-right can use them to paint leftist/progressive ideas as insane.Ape+lust wrote:Jeeezus. He was escorted out by police and a motorcade for his safety.
Some students are agitating for school President Covino's (wait for it.....) resignation for allowing Shapiro to speak on campus.
Here's the thing... what Shapiro brought to CSULA was just boilerplate Shapiro. Over a decade ago, he was giving speeches about leftist brainwashing at the university. Back then, he was ridiculed as The Virgin Ben. No one ever rioted over his antics, but everyone pointed and laughed.
He hasn't changed, but the student body is now full of fuckwits who are too deadly serious about their "safe spaces" to laugh. So now, he's getting the kind of notoriety he couldn't have bought with cash -- he's a threat, rather than a joke.
Well done, assholes. Well done.
They also keep attacking moderate left-wing and centre-left parties, because no one is good enough for their standards. I wouldn't be surprised if ultimately their antics are going to make saner leftists lose dozens of elections. Especially in Europe, where the pro-Islam left is going to crash and burn pretty soon.
In the last years there finally was some widespread progress about LGBT rights and social acceptance. SJWs are probably going to erase some of that progress by insisting to peddle their "trans women are and always have been 100% women" meme, by demanding that very male-looking trans women (think Danielle Muscato) have to be seen as "women, period" and by shaming and punishing people for misgendering others.

Re: Sam Harris vs. Maryam Namazie
Harris began the podcast by revisiting the Apple encryption issue, this time saying those who disagree with him are members of a 'new' 'cult' of privacy; also characterizing his own side as 'the adults' and those who disagree as children.
Harris is the one being childish: The 5th Amendment isn't 'new,' and it is absolute in protecting us from being compelled to make self-incriminating testimony. If I devise an encryption code which hides my incriminating data-- the govt can obtain a search warrant & do their best to crack it-- but I'm under no compulsion to help them against my own best interest. The same applies if I buy such encryption off the shelf. If Harris is capable of refuting this argument, he should do-so directly. If his 'childish' claim really-is intended as a substantial argument-- then he's fighting the uphill battle of accusing all the legal precedent-- of being 'childish'. If he should he succeed at that: so what? If I'm an irate citizen with an arsenal of firearms & encryption... I may indeed be 'childish' in my constitutional law opinions, but I'm also a fait-accompli. My childish bullets & code are going to be far-more deadly & uncrackable when President Trump sends his jackboots after me... than some 'adult' who rolled-over, because she thought guns & iphones were too 'childish' to utilize.
I don't like Harris's granola-yuppie technocrat elitism. He reminds me of David Brooks; of Bill Clinton & Tony Blair's 'Third Way' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Way of selling-out classical liberal values... now echoed by Obama & Hillary. Business class is full of Sam Harris doofuses, and they all sound enlightened-- to each other. They're today's version of a 'square'-- unable to discard the necktie & walk a mile in other shoes.
Which brings us to Namazie. First of all, Harris's complaint about unfairly being called a bigot is initially strong. But he's such a little bitch about it-- that he quickly resembles an SJW trope: that any nice liberal white man being called a bigot is such an affront-- that addressing the horrid injustice of the bigotry charge-- should take immediate precedence over all-other concerns, including actually examining the harm the mighty whitey's bigotry may actually have done. I don't like the SJW accusation: so I take a low view of Harris walking-right into it, by being so butthurt.
His ultra-zen reputation is unfounded if he so-easily ran out of 'patience', turning snippy.
Namazie calls herself a communist & a feminist... so she starts on thin ice with me. I don't like her damseling about being interrupted: Harris pausing to seek a factual clarification is far more valid than merely interrupting to superimpose a his rebuttal. However, Harris also did the latter-- right-after having said he didn't intend to delve into the topic yet. He seemed unwilling to let her have the preliminary last-word, despite offering it to her.
Toward the end, Namazie eventually made stronger points. It took fucking forever because she was arguing with emotional appeal grandstanding... which was empty. While failing to hit home-run one-liners. For example: if she had said un-acted-upon Islamicism is "Thought Crime" & the govt shouldn't screen out immigrants & refugees based on their private thoughts... she would have harnessed the great classical liberal western tradition to serve her ends. Then again: may she doesn't even believe that:
She seems to think western-right-wing thought-crime is her irreconcilable enemy/ but islamicist thought-crime is manageable.
Or not. Just-about every time Harris caught her in a 'gotcha' contradiction-- I saw a way for her to disentangle herself... but she mostly couldn't be bothered to do-so; instead she claimed a bogus high-ground of refusing to defend her position. Lame.
I think Namazie is guilty of lefty-insider academic-elitism... for example she chucks-out the accusation of 'othering' as-if that means-something to Harris's listeners. To her-- everyone whose opinion matters-- has read Edward Said's 'Orientalism' as an undergrad & agreed-with-it-- so she doesn't see the need to re-win the argument here&now vs. Harris. But that's only choosing to forfeit -this- opportunity to persuade -this- audience.
I do think she made a winning MRA argument for why young-male refugees shouldn't be demonized. Too bad her winning argument wasn't-against an opponent who actually advocated the opposite position!
Coupla dumbasses.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
So I did a search through Shakesville to see what, if anything, had been written about it by Melissa McEwan. I was curious about whether she'd listened and believed, because Melissa seems to cover a lot of racism cases and accusations that are lower profile than the Albany one.
Interestingly, she had nothing to say about it at all although it's certain she must have known about it. Much like Cologne, what certain kinds of feminists don't say is probably more interesting than what they do say. McEwan has always been adamant about believing the victim, but in this case she chose not to mention that case at all, even in passing. I imagine she may have picked up on the controversy that surrounded this case and decided not to risk dying on "believe the victim" hill.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
I think that just-about the only thing Namazie DID coherently argue-- was that collective guilt by demographic grouping... such as "young males" is wrong, and individuals should be judged as individuals.Dick Strawkins wrote: The immigrant crisis in Europe is one in which it is possible to have a middle of the road approach - but that is very difficult to put into practice.
It is also one that has a bearing on both feminism and the mens rights movement.
What I mean is that there is little opposition to the idea that Syrian woman and children refugees are taken in by European countries.
There is opposition to the idea that large groups of young men - some from Syria but most are from other countries like Afghanistan and North African nations - coming in without any vetting. The countries taking these young men in don't know their identities, real nationalities or even their ages (which is important because some countries will not convict males of serious crimes if they are not sure they are over 18 and will financially support them at that age - hence there is an incentive for criminally minded individuals to claim to be under 18.)
Increasing the proportion of young men in the population will inevitably lead to an increase in crime, including rape (for purely demographic reasons - it is young men who carry out 90% of these crimes.) Limiting the numbers of unaccompanied young men will result in less crime than a non limited immigration policy.
I believe some countries already have this as part of their criteria for accepting refugees.
So really feminists should be in favor of this, right?
But what about mens rights groups?
Shouldn't they be supportive of their fellow men and oppose the notion of limiting men at the expense of women and children?
There seems to be a curious alliance of silence from both feminists and MRAs on this issue.
As for Maryam, yes, she is avoiding the demographic question and she is most likely doing that to put clear air between herself and Waters.
Yes. it is personally unfair to an innocent male refugee to be excluded while a female refugee is accepted. However maybe it's also fair that a government should be free to take statistical averages into account when trying to guess which is the better option for the good of all the people of that country.
I also question you assertion that MRAs have been silent, refusing to stick-up for male immigrants & refugees. A Voice For Men called the Cologne story a "moral panic", equating it with other false-rape-claim hysterias.
http://www.avoiceformen.com/mens-rights ... e-germany/
John The Other also disputed the Cologne narrative, calling it a 'hoax'.
Searching for 'cologne' in the the r/MensRights subreddit, I see a variety of opinions-- I don't see silence.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
While sick in bed the other day, I was wondering:
Regarding the migrants/refugees crises and the vast amount of people coming in mostly by road and small boats, what are the measures taken for risks of non-local deceases and parasites hitching a ride as well? There doesn't seem to be any measures of quarantine until the refugees make it to a camp, if they get to a camp at all.
It's just something I was musing about.

That would indeed be best, but we have by now millions of people streaming over the EU borders, and we can't afford to research individual cases any more. We know for sure there is a certain percentage that are not escaping a war zone, are lying about their age, and are sometimes proven to be up to no good.Service Dog wrote:I think that just-about the only thing Namazie DID coherently argue-- was that collective guilt by demographic grouping... such as "young males" is wrong, and individuals should be judged as individuals.
We don't know precisely what percentage, but pretty much all cases we've found out about are unaccompanied men in their twenties. So when there are choices to be made, this group may draw the shortest straw.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Okay, so I've been off work sick today, and I got bored, so I decided to answer those "36 Questions Women have for Men" from the Buzzfeed video. So I transcribed the video, and I only count 32 questions. Whatever. Here we go:
Also, my humanity does not in any way depend on your opinion of me.
I used to work in public liability claims. We turned down maybe five claims out of six, not because we thought the claimant hadn't suffered genuine injury or damage, but because we believed we weren't legally liable for it. However, there were one or two who, when you started to investigate their claims, would say things like "are you calling me a liar?" They almost invariably turned out to be liars, trying to use emotional blackmail to deflect attention from their lies. That "how dare you not believe automatically?" attitude is a dead giveaway.
Everything you do, you do with your body, and every law passed restricts what you, and I, and everybody else can do with our bodies, for what is hoped to be the greater good. Having said that, obviously, you're not complaining about laws against getting your body drunk and driving a car with it, or using your hands to stab somebody with a big knife or steal somebody else's stuff. "What I can and can't do with my body" is code for abortion. Thanks in large part to old white men sitting in a room you have that right, although there are laws that attempt to balance your rights against the rights of viable foetuses, and people disagree about where that balance lies. It's a complex and difficult question, and declaring that you have a vagina isn't enough to settle it. Some of the most vociferously anti-abortion people I've met have been women, and they have coochies too.
It all depends on the opinions, how they're expressed, and how much you agree with them. Christina Hoff Sommers and Karen Straughan are opinionated women that I'm willing to bet you don't admire very much, but I think have interesting things to say. Richard Dawkins is an opinionated man who I think is right about a lot of things but sometimes expresses himself badly, and you probably think is an asshole. PZ Myers is an opinionated man who I think is an asshole. The Amazing Atheist is an opinionated man who I think is an asshole, but right about some things. Donald Trump is an opinonated man I'd bet we both agree is an asshole. Who's a "boss"?
How does it feel to be part of the electorate of a country where he stands a realistic chance of being elected president?1. How does it feel to be the same sex as Donald Trump?
You have no idea what I like or don't like, and how is it any of your business? Who appointed you the taste police?MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT
2. Why do you hate romcoms? Or do you just feel you need to hate them? Everybody likes The Notebook, everybody likes Beyonce, it's just a fact.
I have no idea what point you're trying to make here. I don't make you talk about anthing, and you have no idea what I talk about. Boobs are nice, but there's not that much to say about them. But in any case, what's that got to do with men making you talk about men in movies? I'm genuinely baffled.3. Why do you make women sit around and talk about men in movies, when y'all easily just sit around and talk about boobs for hours?
Oh, you're accusing other people of automatically assuming things, how cute.4. Why do you automatically assume that you won't like TV or movies that star a female lead?
If you have to tell people you're funny, you're probably not as funny as you think you are.5. Why are you surprised when women are funny? I'm probably funnier than you.
You sound charming.COURTING AND DATING
6. Why do you think that we're obsessed with you when we hook up? Nine times out of ten I just want you to leave too. I'm busy, I've got shit to do.
Tell that to Tiger Woods, or Dominique Strauss Kahn, or Jian Gomeshi. Sex scandals, kiss-and-tells and accusations of sexual misconduct only ever target the man involved, and often damage his reputation even when they're untrue. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Gilbert can write a book about leaving her husband to to travel the world and sleep with other men, and see it become a best seller and adapted into a hit movie, without any apparent harm to her reputation. That old slut-stud double standard you've made so much hay with over the years has long since been beaten to death.7. Why can't I sleep with as many people as I want to without being judged? When men do it, they're congratulated.
Prejudice and projection. You imagine the worst possible attitude, attribute it to your opponent, and attack them for it - but it only ever existed in, and is entirely the product of, your imagination.8. Why do you consider a woman a tease if she doesn't sleep with you after three dates, but a slut if she sleeps with you on the first date?
I have, a couple of times, run into women who say "no" but tell me later they didn't mean it and wanted me to ignore it and carry on, and are disappointed I didn't. Such women are dangerous and it is best to stay well clear of them.9. In what world does no mean yes? No means no.
Prejudice and projection. See question 8.10. Why do you say that women are too "emotional" to be leaders, then justify catcalling by saying men just can't control themselves?
Prejudice and projection again. It's interesting that feminists attribute the worst of motives to men who, usually due to lack of self-esteem, are trying to be the kind of men you say you want, but give a free pass for years to men like Hugo Schwyzer, who really did get laid by cynically telling feminists what they wanted to hear.11. Why do you think that, just because you're nice to me, I owe you my body?
Why is it that if a girl sends a boy a nude selfie and he tells everybody, he's a sleazy bastard, but if he sends her a nude selfie and she tells everybody - he's a sleazy bastard? There's a double standard that still has legs.12. Why would you ever send an unsolicited dick pic?
Prejudice and projection.COMMUNAL SPACES
13. Why do you think it's okay to harass women, or make offensive comments about women, but when somebody does it to your sister it's not okay?
If you get interrupted a lot, it's usually a sign you're monopolising the conversation and other people can't get a word in edgewise.14. How does it feel to interrupt me when I'm in the middle of making a point during a meeting?
This one barely even deserves a facepalm.15. Why do you have to sit with your legs so wide open? I get that you have balls, but I don't stand around with my arms wide open to make room for my boobs.
Men do generally have more physical strength than women. Your ability to give birth does not enable you to lift heavy objects, or withstand physical force directed at you.CURIOSITY
16. Why are women perceived as "the weaker sex" even though we literally birth you? Like watermelons through like this?
My emotions are mine, and who I share them with is my business. Why do you think you're entitled to them, even though you make no effort to earn my trust?17. Why is it so bad to show your emotions? It means you're human.
Also, my humanity does not in any way depend on your opinion of me.
Perhaps because people like you are always trying to tear it down.18. Why are you always trying to prove your masculinity?
You're the one who can't bring yourself to broadcast the word "fuck" without bleeping it out. If a word is offensive, it's usually because women take offence.19. Why the f*ck isn't it ladylike to cuss? When did words get gendered?
It's not. It's necessary to build things like the presumption of innocence into legal systems because people's first instinct is often to lynch people accused of emotive crimes like rape before knowing all the facts, and enough accusations turn out to be fabricated that nobody has any excuse not to suspend judgement until the facts are known.20. Why is it your first instinct to doubt women who have been sexually violated or raped?
I used to work in public liability claims. We turned down maybe five claims out of six, not because we thought the claimant hadn't suffered genuine injury or damage, but because we believed we weren't legally liable for it. However, there were one or two who, when you started to investigate their claims, would say things like "are you calling me a liar?" They almost invariably turned out to be liars, trying to use emotional blackmail to deflect attention from their lies. That "how dare you not believe automatically?" attitude is a dead giveaway.
Why do women often use their period as an excuse for behaving like an arsehole?21. Why do you assume a woman is angry because she's on her period?
You seem far more concerned up about dick size than any man I've ever met is about makeup.22. Why do you think women who wear makeup are false advertising? We could say the same thing about your dick size.
Why isn't it weird that there are women who think that, in a democracy, where laws are passed by our elected representatives, possession of a "coochie" is enough to override that?23. Why isn't it weird that there's a bunch of old white men sitting in a room making legislation about what I can and can't do with my body? Do you have a coochie?
Everything you do, you do with your body, and every law passed restricts what you, and I, and everybody else can do with our bodies, for what is hoped to be the greater good. Having said that, obviously, you're not complaining about laws against getting your body drunk and driving a car with it, or using your hands to stab somebody with a big knife or steal somebody else's stuff. It's a complex and difficult question, and declaring that you have a vagina isn't enough to settle it. Some of the most vociferously anti-abortion people I've met have been women, and they have coochies too.
Why are feminists so obsessed with other people's sexual fantasies?24. Why are straight guys so obsessed with lesbians?
Veiled threat noted.25. How does it feel to get kicked in the balls?
Sometimes, yeah. Sometimes I get so tired I relax my guard in front of someone I thought I could trust, and suddenly the knives go in. But usually videos like yours are enough to remind me that there are people out there with malicious intent and I need to keep my guard up.26. Do you ever get tired of trying to be manly all the time?
Why do feminists reliably shout down discussion of things that adversely affect men, like suicide and educational underachievement? Why do feminists campaign to abolish women's prisons when women are already treated more leniently by the criminal justice system than men who committed equivalent crimes? Why are feminists campaigning against the long-overdue equalisation of retirement ages in the UK? There's somebody who's afraid of gender equality here, and it's not me.EQUALITY
27. Why are you so afraid of gender equality?
Women control 80% of spending. Women's earnings are subsidised from men's earnings, and so they don't need to earn as much to enjoy the same lifestyle. And the closer we get to equal earnings, the more women in the media complain that we as men are not living up to your expectations. You want to have your cake and eat it.28. Why do I deserve to be paid less than you? In what world does 77c equal a dollar? In what world does 68c equal a dollar? How is that fair?
On dating sites, men mostly search on age and body size, and women mostly search on height and income. It's not that men are intimidated by a higher-earning parter, it's that women aren't interested in a lower-earning one - and men know it.29. Why are you intimidated by a woman who makes more money than you? That's awesome. More money!
Aw, you've been watching that "ban bossy" video, haven't you?30. Why are opinionated women seen as bitches when opinionated men are seen as bosses?
It all depends on the opinions, how they're expressed, and how much you agree with them. You first.32. Why are you so afraid of recognising your own privilege? It doesn't mean you're a bad person. Just recognise it and do something about it.

Reminds me of a conversation recently -- at a recent event, there was a photo booth where you could get your picture taken with two women dressed as Vegas Showgirls. A woman I know saw supports on the headdresses and commented that "That really shows how much harder it is to be a woman than a man. A man never has to wear something like that." I replied, "Women very rarely have to strap on pads and try to give each other concussions."

Pretty sure the volume of semen men expel in nine months is greater than a watermelon but you don't hear us complaining about it.

Great answers, paddybrown. The only one I'd change is:
How does it feel to be the same sex as Sarah Palin?1. How does it feel to be the same sex as Donald Trump?

great job, paddy! tho--for the sake of conversation-- I balk at your assertion that -everything- is subservient to 'the greater good'. I think individual freedom gives me the right to do selfish shit/ greater good be damned.

Fucking LOL!!!
EDF runs a competition 'Girls in Tech' which is 'aimed at girls' but still open to boys. Cue feminists getting pissy when the competition is won by a boy.

To be fair, I did hedge it a bit, as "for what is hoped to be the greater good". I think we all hope that when politicians pass laws, they have the best of motives, naive as that hope might often be.Service Dog wrote:great job, paddy! tho--for the sake of conversation-- I balk at your assertion that -everything- is subservient to 'the greater good'. I agree with you. It's more of a matter of respecting each other's individual rights than of acting towards an abstract "greater good".
About abortion: I don't think that fetuses should have the same rights of fully formed human beings. Especially when their brains still aren't formed. However, since abortion is an expensive and invasive procedure it's better to prevent pregnancies through birth control than to act an unwanted pregnancies through abortion.
If religious leaders weren't dogmatically convinced that sex should be only used for reproductive purposes they would understand that preventing an unwanted fetus from being formed is the best way to avoid an abortion.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
Namazie comes across as a bit of an ideologue, and doesn't seem interested in addressing logical gaps in her positions when they're pointed out (or, at the very least, she's not good at explaining why she doesn't think they're actually gaps). When Harris pressed her, she'd either pull an "agree-to-disagree" and try to steer the conversation to another topic altogether, or she'd deflect by beating around the bush and going off on tangents. The most exhausting part was when they were discussing immigration: Harris tried and tried, but he couldn't get her to even acknowledge that there are legitimate concerns about completely open-door policies. Bizarre.
I do appreciate her strong commitment to free speech and universal human rights. That makes a huge difference for me.
