The Refuge of the Toads

Practically all we've been talking about this week is The Orbit, and people see... corncobs?

So nice to see that honesty is alive and well in the atheist community.
Re: The Refuge of the Toads
I think its some of each. Some of the more insane of the crowd probably try to function in this deranged manner all the time and this leads further to their shut-in nature (ex Melody, Caine, etc.) Others probably turn it on and off, or atleast present a fairly sensible face to their real-life interactions, while possibly fuming inside. (ex, PZ and isnt either Zvan or Benson a software analyst?)Søren Lilholt wrote:FFS really?!?HunnyBunny wrote:the crazy continues at The Orbit.
Greta is now apologising for a 6 year-old post in which she used the word 'stupid'.
:bjarte:I want to extend my apologies for using the word “stupid.” In 2010 I wasn’t aware of the problems with this language. I probably should have been, but I wasn’t. The piece also uses some other ableist language (“insanely rigid but impossibly contradictory”). If you want to understand more about why it’s ableist to use words like “stupid,” “insane,” “crazy,” “dumb,” and “idiot” as insults, please read the excellent piece on this by Ania Bula (my esteemed colleague here at The Orbit), Ableism Challenge. She explains it a lot better than I can.
https://web.archive.org/web/20160317011 ... -language/
I realise Greta is of significantly-below-average intelligence ('stupid', if you will) so she might be a special case - but generally speaking, how can people this deranged function in normal society? Do they simply profess this bullshit online, and then immediately go back to being normal when dealing with real people? Or are they this dysfunctional in every single human interaction?

What I find amusing is how lies such as "all they are talking about is violating people with corn cobs" will only encourage more of The Cow's sheep to come and take a look, which will reveal the lie, reducing The Cow's trustworthiness in the sheeps' eyes. Dumb move.

Can someone talk me through this? AHA seems crazy. Religious figures should be forced to perform marriages they don't want to perform when all town clerks or justices of the peace or whatever other secular state authorities are legally obligated to perform the same act? Should a mosque be forced to rent their venue to a pork BBQ fundraiser to buy pork-covered bullets? The Georgia bill, reworked several times by lawmakers amid criticism that earlier versions went too far, declares that no pastor can be forced to perform a same-sex wedding.
The bill also grants faith-based organizations — churches, religious schools or associations — the right to reject holding events for people or groups of whom they object. Faith-based groups also could not be forced to hire or retain an employee whose beliefs run counter to the organization’s.
Opponents say the bill could be used to deny services and discriminate against same-sex couples.
“The decision by the legislature today was to make an egregious and discriminatory bill even worse,” the Human Rights Campaign, which represents the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, said in a statement.
“It’s appalling that anti-equality extremists in the legislature are trying to ignore the will of the people of Georgia,” it said.

Secondly, only half the total will be allocated by views the same way as at FTB; the other half will be divided equally between all bloggers.

There are two thoughts about this law. The first is that it is a big waste of time because these religious institutions already have the right to deny service in most cases. The other thought is that this law will be used such as the way that other people will use it in a roundabout way for other people to deny service to gay people.
Funny enough the governor who is a Republican and very conservative is probably not going to sign the bill. This might be due to the fact that he is just a decent person but I also think he is in his last term.

Private religious groups already have this right, so the question becomes: Is this bill just a redundant piece of pro-religious virtue signalling which effectively does nothing? Re: The Refuge of the Toads
There is a lot going on here. For example, the government often gives money to religious organizations to do work that impacts the general public. In some states one of the only ways you can adopt is to go through a church organization. So, the conflict is that non-religious people may not get critical services if religious groups get a lock on the service.Really? wrote:The American Humanist Association captions an article in this manner:

The real problem is that the government often funds religious organizations rather than secular ones. Religious organizations are often able to supply services at a lower cost because they have fewer employment and safety rules, as well as more volunteers.
The Humanists and others have not been successful is ending government funding of religious groups that provide services so they have to fight this law. The law will likely cause problems for non-religious people seeking certain services.
All of this may have blown over if the non-religious were a bit more trustworthy. Religious folks are freaked out over some events. For example, a baker was found guilty of discrimination because they wouldn't bake a wedding cake for a gay couple. The baker lost and was fined $135,000. Yeah... wow... over a fucking cake. Even I think this is unfair.

The only area were I could see this being a problem is if the pastor was a judge. Then that should be part of his or her state duties. Set up a rule like that, then many small county judges will become pastors just to avoid gay marriage. Becoming a pastor is as easy as submitting a few forms online. If the law they are crafting does not acknowledge that, situation then it is poorly crafted (or what they think is well crafted to get them what they want).
As far as them holding events they don't want to, I will give them that. So long as it is on church property, they should get their pass and to my knowledge, no one is forcing them currently.
As far as religious groups not being forced to hire or retain people who's beliefs run counter to their own:
* Many (but not all) grade schools and high schools run by religious organizations already do that. And I believe that it is not contested. Gay? Fired. Pregnant out of wed-lock? Fired. I am not sure this is right.
* Many social service organizations for the poor act this way. For instance Catholic services, food kitchens & homeless shelters in Washington DC did not want to be forced to retain or hire gay people. Washington DC, said fine, if you are not going to follow our non-discrimination rules then the city will not provide money to your organization. Would the new Georgia law consider this "force?" I would expect this to at least go to court as they try to declare it force.
* What about when you get to larger employers such as Catholic Universities or Hospitals? Gay? Muslim? Atheist? Pregnant out of wedlock? I have a much more difficult time swallowing this type of rule when the organization is so large.
* At my grade school, alter boys were paid. They later enforced a rule that only Catholics could be alter-boys. It pissed off the non-catholics in my grade school but I consider this fair.
I think the dividing line should be is if your "religious" organization is really all about your religion, or if you are doing something else.

And this is Wu while he's speaking:"And I did point out this morning that Gamergate happened in 2014 and not in 1865, and I wonder how its, uh, intensity impressed you or surprised you."

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
I was never much of a World War I buff...and only knew/heard about the basics...dates, a few battles, the 4th installment of Black Adder...Ericb wrote:I'm a bit of a WW1 buff myself (though probably a few levels lower than you). Would it be doxing you if you told me who the Prof is? Just curious.Brive1987 wrote:Just had my first online tutorial - on the origins on the First World War.
I have four books on my shelf by the Professor leading the discussion and I was a big mouth.
Heaven.
But heard Dan Carlin's multipart podcast about WWI...mainly just the Western Front. Was excellent and it really made me want to learn more.

It is the "Blueprint for Armageddon" series...but these are all good.

I see this from time to time and wonder if I didn't finally do something to piss off the fascist tit on a level exceeding Steersman. Anyone else?
It's typically, but not always, when I've got my proxy turned on.

Dan Carlin makes me want to stab my ears with things.
Question about Wu. I know she has that one game. Is that it? Has she ever done anything before either on her own or with a large company?

From the article:

The date would be March 16th. Here is Mundane Matt's Twitter Feed:

Hmm... odd. None of those tweets are from Wednesday morning, Oregan time. Mundane Matt may have deleted or set all of those tweets to private. Or he gave a false time punch for the twitter fight.

For someone who said in his video he doesn't want to give any clues as to who he thinks it is in order to all the police to do their investigation, Matt is not the brightest of bulbs. He said he got in a Twitter argument Wednesday morning and thinks the prank could have stemmed from that.

Re: The Refuge of the Toads
You've probably heard of the $200,000 gift she received for "graduating" college? That went to her first venture, an ostensible animation studio that didn't produce anything more than a strip comic, published in her college newpaper.comhcinc wrote:Dan Carlin makes me want to stab my ears with things.
