That young lady who impudently scorned the InfoWars hack has done us a service. She’s shown us how to properly treat liars and nutjobs: cuss ’em out, flip ’em off, and walk away. They don’t deserve more.

Oh, no wonder I missed it. I thought you were referring to something about them trying to ban more skeptics from conferences.

I guess Becky is getting a bit long in the tooth, so PZ has moved on to a clone of her who is so under-aged that he won't have to worry about her getting a case of the middle-aged uglies for quite a while. Yikes!

Perhaps he meant Las Ketchup?

Those three party girls at the beginning look like they were ridden hard and put away wet. What struck me is that while they do look better than Watson does these days I see desperation in their faces.

(You know, despite my potentially dismissive snark, I get the impression that Watson is looking worse and worse every time one of you posts her image here).

Rewatch the video if you did not see it at first. Am I imagining things? I am notorious for misreading people which is why I ask.

Zoloft worked fairly well over a decade for me but gradually became less useful. A switch to Venlafaxane has worked out well since then.

My nephew mentioned to me somethng about doing a google search for 'american inventors', I tried it and came up with this:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/ ... neotrs.jpg
Notice anything about the strip of pictures of inventors?

So does DuckGoGo do any better?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b112/ ... entors.jpg

So it is true. Blacks invented everything. Like all of those ebonic history lessons on Youtube have been telling us. Whitey stole everything from blacks.

We are such assholes. Hey, that smartphone or tablet your reading this with right now? Blacks invented, you stole it, give it to the next black person you see and tell them your sorry for stealing it from them.

If I am not mistaken, Duck Duck Go just pulls their search data from google. All they do is obfuscate the requests so that google does not track your history.

That's old news. It's because the main search which contains "american inventors" is actually "african american inventors".

Try US inventors and you'll be much less surprised.

I have to say that I don't mind Eiynah, for the most part. The Cracked article wasn't bad: she rightly pointed out that Reza Aslan is a charlatan, she supported Ali Rizvi, she argued that liberal people should never shield islam from criticism and pointed out that celebrating the hijab is "problematic". All of which is true, and a far cry from the Sarsour-worshiping Regressive Leftists who think that hijabs are "symbols of resistance" or "feminist".

Even the general gist of her position isn't that bad: defend the civil rights of muslims because they're people and they deserve the same civil rights of everyone else while you never stop criticizing islam for its many, many, horrible flaws. I'm on board with that.

She pointed out that the progressive muslims/ex-muslims are erased and censored by the Regressive Left:
And on the left, secular liberal Muslims continue to be censored or culturally erased
She even repeatedly and clearly pointed out that an accusation of "islamophobia" is used to silence criticism of islam:
This is part of the reason Eiynah doesn't like the term "Islamophobia": "Allowing any criticism of Islamic fundamentalism, homophobia, etc. to be labeled as 'Islamophobia' gives right-wing fundamentalist Muslims a chance to shield their religion from valid criticism. It's essentially the same thing right-wing Christians [do]. Think of the absurdity of the 'War on Christmas' to get a feel for how 'Islamophobia' sounds to us. That's why I prefer the more precise term 'anti-Muslim bigotry.' The problem is not theological criticisms of Islam or criticisms of literalist interpretations -- it is the generalizations, hatred, and fearmongering around Muslims."
The problem with Eiynah aren't her positions. She's not a Regressive Leftist by any means, and she has righfully criticized the Regressive Left many times. The problem is that while her nuanced position is good she's a bit too quick to judge others for their positions, especially if they criticize islam as a whole instead of posting the usual "political" or "traditional" or "literalist" caveats.

It's good to have nuance but it's hard, so I don't blame her for some occasional slip-ups. What I don't like are when she's far too quick to assume that some other ex-muslims who disagree with her must sympathize with the "alt-right" or like Trump. Also she doesn't take criticism as well as she should, but then again, who am I to talk after the "laying the pipes" debacle when I threatened people with lawsuits (not my proudest moment)?

Overall: Eiynah is someone who's on my side, and I'd like to be on hers, but she alienates people by getting into petty fights. Still she's light years better than Myers and his merry band of Sarsour apologists.

She's not wrong on Jordy-Boy, either. He IS more than a little nutso, even though he's right about the "special pronouns" brigade being nuts.
In his two hour conversation with Sam Harris he couldn’t really define 'truth'. He is basically the religious conservative version of what he criticizes re:postmodernism. Dislikes the pronoun Xir because apparently thats just leftist nonsense….but can’t decide on what truth means.
This is very true. Peterson has a really WEIRD approach to truth, which is as loopy as post-modernism. Also the weird TradLife/religious woo is the antithesis of a scientific and secular world view.

Not all of her attacks against Peterson are completely fair, though. On the issue of "special pronouns" Peterson is more right that she says he is, and while there's plenty of crazy, loopy or regressive stuff in Peterson's lectures this quote doesn't seem very objectionable to me:
“Men do almost all the dangerous jobs and outside work. There’s lots of reasons that men get paid more than women that have *nothing to do with prejudice*”
This is true. I think Peterson is dishonestly trying to use this truth to advocate that women shouldn't pursue risky or demanding careers "for their own good", which is absurd, as women aren't fragile porcelain dolls who should stay behind and procreate and leave the dirty work to men. However it IS true that risky or demanding jobs are paid more and that's one of the reasons for the gender pay gap.

Women are ON AVERAGE less risk-prone and having children IS harder to reconcile with a demanding job, especially while you're pregnant.
This doesn't mean that women who DO work in risky or demanding jobs and either don't have children or manage to reconcile cihldren and demanding work are necessarily going to be unhappy as Jordy-boy tries to argue. More power to you if you can have kids and a full-time career in a demanding job, and if you don't want children you shouldn't be forced to have them just to "perpetuate your race" or other idiotic white identitarian reason.

Hell, there are so many people in the world than more women deciding not to have children in every country on earth would probably be a rather good thing to prevent overpopulation. Indeed I think that if there's any hope to reduce conflicts it lies with avoiding over-competition over resources and so voluntary reduction of fertility is a very good thing.

But as studies have shown women ON AVERAGE tend to want to work in fields (education, social work, etc.) that pay less than fields which ON AVERAGE women like less (economics or engineering). This is one of the causes of the pay gap and ON ITS OWN it has nothing to do with prejudice.

The rest of Eiynah's blogpost is actually interesting in presenting a lot of Peterson's loopy or regressive opinions. I too am baffled by Peterson's popularity, although I think that it's his anti-SJW stuff that drives it.

In general the problem is that there's no strong modern, pro-Enlightenment, pro-freedom of choice, pro-science social movement which isn't infested to some degree by the SJW identitarian PoMo crap, so the anti-modern, ethnic or religious collectivist, religious or ethnic identitarians are the only ones who are offering some intellectual clout to the anti-SJW crowd.

This isn't good. If the choice becomes between SJW identitarians and white identitarians/religious nutjobs then we're screwed. There are a few people who are neither, I'd wager that there's a lot of them actually, but they're not getting publicity for the most part. Social media seem to reward the nutters on both the left and the right with lots of free publicity, and so the inmates are running the asylums.

Basically we NEED an anti-SJW left. We really do, and sooner rather than later.

I'm not familiar with Vegan Gains - but did find that his video did highlight a some of the nuttier aspects of Peterson (or at least the way he chooses to make his case).

Peterson videos sometimes come across as more proscriptive than descriptive, and that he is quite adept at 'winning' an argument by making the opponent look foolish, rather than presenting his own case (and thus exposing it to criticism).

It's 2017 (current year) approx 10 years since the crest of the 'new atheist' wave - the push back is emerging (or the zeitgeist has changed) - and Peterson will be helping define what form it will take.

Yup. I mean, it kind of exists, it just gets really no institutional power or even acknowledgement. Who is the politician (maybe Sanders, but that's still a bit off), or the news personality or what who represents this sort of anti-SJW leftist sentiment? Who has the big megaphone for that? Honestly, I don't know of anybody. That's the problem.

And I think largely it's because the attitude is that if you're not pro-SJW then you MUST be on the right, and that's where things go horribly wrong, be it the whole Athiesm+ thing or be it GamerGate or whatever. My personal opinion that it's the lack of understanding of the anti-SJW left, and the lack of institutional resources and because of that intellectual focus, that are behind a lot of the current nastiness in society. It's unnecessary polarization.

Which is why my goal isn't actually to convert people to the anti-SJW left. It's simply to convince them that such a thing exists, and what we actually believe. (That identitarians on both the left and the right act in often bigoted fashions, as is apt to come with identitarian ideology)

The new trend among Twitter feminists is that if a man disagrees with a woman they're mansplaining even if the woman is clearly wrong...unless the woman is criticizing feminism itself, then she can be told to shut up, demonized, smeared and even insulted.

There is much criticism of the rise of white separatism amoungst the poor working class whites.

But I don't see it as being distinct from 'white flight' which has been de facto for the white middle class for over half a century. Although, it may not necessarily be racist to move to a better neighbourhood as your economic situation improves.

Evolution of "mansplaining": "we don't have evidence, but we feel our voices as women aren't valued enough because men intervene too much">>"men should NEVER disagree with us, even if we're wrong!">>"everyone who disagrees with us is a fascist misogynistic bastard, including women!"

Evidence-free arguments based on feelings and points of view very easily degenerate into incoherent authoritarian tribalism. Valuing feelings and points of views doesn't lead to peaceful anarchic freedom, but to the tyranny of those who think of themselves as perpetual victims.

Hello All,

I'll put my hand up as another depressive - I suspect that I've been depressed to some extent for all of my adult life: wasn't until I married another sufferer that I was pushed into getting diagnosed. My chemicals of choice are Pristiq and mirtazapine.
deLurch wrote:OK. Two votes for "CBT" Clinical Behavioral Therapy as a good solution for depression.

Can either of you (Facisit Tit or Old_ones) give me a rough run down of what that involves?

Is there any knowledge as to if diet, exercise, socialization, dog (Hell Watson claims having a dog forced her to get dressed, not get high or drunk and leave the fucking house), help alleviate depression?
As others have said, yes to all these, though their various efficacies are debated - for example, the Cochrane Review on exercise and depression found:

"Exercise is moderately more effective than no therapy for reducing symptoms of depression.
Exercise is no more effective than antidepressants for reducing symptoms of depression, although this conclusion is based on a small number of studies.
Exercise is no more effective than psychological therapies for reducing symptoms of depression, although this conclusion is based on small number of studies.
The reviewers also note that when only high-quality studies were included, the difference between exercise and no therapy is less conclusive.
Attendance rates for exercise treatments ranged from 50% to 100%.
The evidence about whether exercise for depression improves quality of life is inconclusive."

There are plenty of other reviews http://www.cochranelibrary.com/topic/Me ... epression/

Of course, exercise has other benefits too. Pity I loathe most forms of exercise, and don't really see any improvement (in mood) when I do exercise, but that's just my personal experience.

I could never really get my head round CBT - I understand what I'm supposed to do, but when I tried it, I couldn't get anywhere. I did/do use minfullness, but that, I find is most useful for situations where I can't focus because my mind is racing.

What works for me is to do something - even something as mundane as washing up - but something which I can look at and say 'job done', and get a feeling of satisfaction from (at the moment, repairing my son's dinosaur toys - I have a T rex spinal surgery scheduled for as soon as I manage to pick up the right glue... ). Also having kids has changed my outlook on life - but that's probably not an option for everyone :).

Of course you could always pass the buck at any given time. But you have done good at a much needed time.
Thanks from here too. I may not post much, but I'm very grateful this site exists.

I don't need my 'heroes' to be perfect. (I don't need heroes, but you get it.) Peterson's christianity sounds something like Brodie's or Spong's, and I can live with that.

At 3:46, Peterson describes ritualistic ideology bereft of philosophy as a surrogate for religion, using veganism as an example. I don't have a problem for this. Peterson surely didn't intend it so, but it's a strong condemnation of SJW, Plusser-style humanism posing as atheism.

Vegan boy chose to completely ignore the context or Peterson's real point (a set-up of what he was being asked and the topic of that lecture would've been in order.) So I stopped watching. Also, because: vegans.

I think the new message coming from stories of Asian child grooming gangs is :-

Don't teach rapists not to rape.

Teach children how not to be vulnerable to grooming gangs.

The video gave more of Peterson's personal background than I had previously known. He has had issues with depression, and both he & his daughter have had serious health problems. All of which point to him finding religion to be a comfort, rather than believing it because he finds it to be plausible.

Which would not necessarily be an issue - but when he chooses to make claims about atheism (the 'hyper-rationalists') or the alt-right (that they are 'incomplete' because their expressed patriotism indicates father issues - What?) or his bifurcation of 'truth' - indicate that it's the ends rather than the means that matters more to him.

As a clinical psychologist the temptation to view the entire world as a patient in need of treatment would seem to be overwhelming.

Nope. He puts it down to a ketogenic diet. He started Maps Of Meaning before he got married.

I'm sympathetic to Peterson's personal circumstances.

But feel that much of his analysis, criticisms and lectures require some evidence or peer review - before I take what he says for granted.

Maybe I'll be the doubting Thomas, late to the table, and ultimately be proven wrong - if so I'll just have to live with it.
