Actually, his name is K-NUT, and he's from a distant planet.
But seriously, good thing they also named him Zachary, just in case the kids tease him too much. ;)

How fair is this PhilIn an opinion piece, Italian journalist Giulio Meotti says France’s discussion about Islam and Islamisation shows the country’s panic about the subject.
He reacts to the advice French professor Christian de Moliner gave to split up France in two territories: A part with French law for non-Muslims, and a part with Shariah law for Muslims who choose for it.
Meotti says the situation looks like the moment when France was losing the war in Algeria and suggested to split up the country into a part for whites and a part for Muslim Algerians. He adds that the “War over France” is hardly at its beginnings:
“Many murderous Islamist attacks have taken place and large territories are already outside the control of the French secular Republic. Even if the conflict is still in its infancy, the notion of ‘partition’ or secession is advancing in public opinion”, he says.

I quite like Angela, and she obviously doesn't have bony elbows. It would have been a different story if that had been Maggie T, though.

I haven't heard of any discussion about islam here. In fact, I've seen a great avoidance to use the term in MSM. So no idea if it's fair or not.rayshul wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2017 11:38 pmhttps://voiceofeurope.com/2017/11/franc ... journalist

Just a wee bit of a problem. The same one that many other countries have that let Muslims into them are experiencing.
But you might be interested in a couple of other posts by the same author, Giulio Meotti, who was quoted in that Voice of Europe article, these from the Gatestone Institute:

Sure looks like Ms. Shepherd has thrown the fox in amongst the chickens - a breath of fresh air, to mix metaphors. :-) But not much of an exaggeration to suggest she's a modern day Emile Zola with her J'accuse!AndrewV69 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2017 10:32 pmUpdate:
Open letter from Nathan Rambukkana to Lindsay Shepherd
<snip>
It was quite clear from the audio that the issue was she did not condemn Peterson before showing the video you mendacious soyboy. You would have been better off if you remained silent.
Follow the link for the full "apology".
And while I seem to recollect that you're not a big fan of the Mope and Wail, they've had a couple of good posts recently, this one from Margaret Wente, in particular - and there's a link in the article to an Editorial which is quite good as well:
Indeed. If you want to understand the intellectual corruption that is eating away at our universities, listen to an audio recording made by a graduate student named Lindsay Shepherd. She is a 22-year-old teaching assistant at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. Every senior administrator and every governor at every campus in the country should listen to it and ask themselves how far the rot has spread. ...
Laurier alumni – as well as lots of other people – are rightly outraged at what happened to Ms. Shepherd. Which doesn't mean that anything will change. So far, the university has mustered no more than the usual anodyne response, complete with the promise of a task force to explore the "complex" issues of academic expression.
In the meantime, the underlying rot goes unaddressed. Large parts of academic life – as well as of administration – have been captured by far-left groupthink. "The problem doesn't come from this one incident," Ms. Shepherd says. "It's also reflected in the classes I take. Basically, they're all about identity politics."
And no, these issues are really not complex at all. Ms. Shepherd deserves a heartfelt apology and an honorary degree for her courage and her common sense. "Maybe this will be a wake-up call," she says hopefully. If it is, we'll have her to thank.

This paper investigates how the peer gender composition in university affects students' major choices and labor market outcomes. Women who are randomly assigned to more female peers become less likely to choose male-dominated majors, they end up in jobs where they work fewer hours and their wage grows at a slower rate. Men become more likely to choose male-dominated majors after having had more female peers, although their labor market outcomes are not affected. Our results suggest that the increasing female university enrollment over recent decades has paradoxically contributed to the occupational segregation among university graduates that persists in today’s labor market.

Many people, including James Damore, pointed out than when not pressured into choosing the more rewarding jobs (either by necessity or by peer pressure) women tend to prefer jobs that have to do with people (including education and personal care) and men tend to choose jobs that have to do with things (including engineering, economics and STEM in general).
There's more need for engineers than, say, interpretative dance experts in the market, which explains the wage gap, along with some other factors like maternity leave.
It's almost as if sexual dimorphism isn't a social construct, and instead society is, at least in part, a biological construct...

Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
Of course "tend to" is the expression of a stastical difference and there are women who are interested in STEM or economics and men who are interested in education or personal care, just like men tend to be taller than women but there are tall women and short men.
The SocJus and the TradLife online warriors are both essentialist movements that wish to "fix" society by denying choices: the SocJus want perfect equals representation everywhere, the TradLife want perfect segregation into specific roles.
If height was what matters for income, the SocJus would argue that we should cut off the legs of men, the TradLife crowd that we should cut off the legs of tall women.

Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
I'd add that one thing that needs to be explained many, many times is that even if it's more likely for group A to be X than for group B this doesn't mean that the majority or even a very high percentage of group A are X. To make an extreme example, if X is a binary trait (you're either X or non-X) and 0.01% of group A are X, but only 0.0001% of B are X, group A members are 100 times more likely to be more X than group B members, but the vast majority (99.99%!) of group A members isn't X.jet_lagg wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 7:21 amI've got my political arguments down to a science these days. Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
I'm going to actually go all in and say that reforming the math curriculum to teach more statistics would be a net good for politics.
Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
I am a big advocate for teaching basic stats in high school and making it mandatory. This would help make for a better world more than any one thing I can think of in the education realm. Instead, Calculus is taught as the most common advanced math class, and stats is taught after stats. At least, this is the way they teach it in the US. It is really stupid. Sure, calc is essential for engineer or physics, but stats is really useful for just about everyone. The problem is that math educators don't want to bother building a basic stats curriculum and getting teachers trained. Stats is supposedly SOOOOO hard that you can't teach a basic version. This is 100% untrue (and I have the stats to prove it... with a p statistic of significance!)
My daughter needed a math class in her senior year and was "supposed" to take calc. But... she has absolutely no interest in the sciences. So, I talked the school into letting her take stats instead of calc. It was a good choice.
