I read the Cat Person short story. Typical faux-thought-provoking drivel which is why I stop reading New Yorker short stories ages ago. Prose is fine, but otherwise complete shit pointless waste of time.

Fuck spoiler tag — I’d spoil your day if I let you read this splat of dog diarrhea on your own:

* Protagonist is 20-yo barista who flirts with Starbucks customers to score tips;
* Gets new job at movie theater concession stand where no tips allowed;
* Flirts with frumpy, dumpy nerd buying junk food anyway out of habit;
* Nerd makes same junk food joke over and over whenever he's at movies;
* Nerd asks for her number. She gives it too him because he pays attention to her;
* Text flirts for weeks with nerd because he pays attention to her;
* Entire text relationship is based on one junk-food joke and one cat joke;
* Lets nerd swing by and buy her junk food when she’s having a ‘can’t even’ emotional crying meltdown before finals;
* Accepts invitation to go out on a date because either she’s bored & lonely, or there’s the prospect of more free junk food;
* Nerd makes ‘their’ junk food joke with a waitress, which bums out our heroine;
* Gets in line at club with bouncer at the door, even though she’s underage;
* Has another public emotional crying meltdown because she’s embarrassed — and apparently caught completely by surprise — she got carded;
* Only now do they reveal each other’s ages, 20 & 35;
* She takes 35 year old nerd to her college dive bar that turns blind eye to underage drinking;
* She gets tipsy, agrees to go home with him;
* Nerd makes nerdy joke about his cats;
* They start fooling around; she is — parse this if you can — turned on by fact that she’s fooling around with someone who doesn’t turn her on;
* Frumpy, dumpy, 35-yo nerd is a really bad lover. Like really bad. She is blindsided by this discovery;
* Nerd muffs talking dirty, saying ‘I always wanted to fuck someone with really nice tits’;
* She imagines what he’s thinking about her really nice tits, her 'perfect' 20-yo body, her 'perfect', blemish-free skin. No trace of narcissism here whatsoever;
* After the really bad sex, she says she needs to head home. Nerd, being a pathetic, bad-in-bed-and-deep-down-knows-it nerd, tries to get her to stay the night with the tantalizing offer of breakfast of the amazing, dorito and milk dud filled omelette he makes;
* Once home, she realizes she never saw any cats at his pad;
* She then ignores his texts for like a week or more;
* Her roommate finally grabs her phone and types ‘I don’t want to see you again. pls stop txtg me’;
* Nerd says okay too bad cuz I thought we really formed a special bond there over the junk food jokes, the cats I don’t actually have, and the best sex of my life;
* Nerd stops texting her as promised. Repeat: Nerd stops texting her as promised;
* Some time later, she’s out with a ‘male friend’ at her college dive bar and OMFG! Nerd is there;
* Next day he texts her. Saw you at bar. Was that your boyfriend? If not, do you want to get together again and have some more of the best sex of my life?

He's a sheer projection of Larsson himself.

¹If you ever get through the first half of this 1000-page monstrosity, that is, because there Larsson introduces so many names I had to put it down and restart, this time with a notes bloc beside it to remember them all. The action only starts some 400 pages in and soon turns into torture porn. And then, when you think it's finished, it gets even more preposterous as the hacker girl just lifts several bank accounts for reasons unrelated to anything else in the main storyline.

Most of these modern Swedish detectives are vague destillations of the classics from Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, who introduced the concept of sleuths with left-wing sympathies. But while I can forgive M&S for their communist flirtations, Larsson has no such excuse.

I recall enjoying the books, circa 2009, and then the swedish films. Noomi Raplace was good, and I'd get hot & bothered watching Lena Endre fold laundry. But even so, I was bummed by how every male character was either a sadistic sexual predator, or a wimp, with every female character either a victim or the one wearing the pants. The mystery was intriguing, but most of the trilogy was indeed torture porn. Larsson thought that shit up, man.

I tried watching the first movie again not too long ago but fairly soon I realized: 'holy crap -- this is written and directed by Oggvorbis, and produced by Tumblr!'

Thanks for the synopsis, I then read the entire story, and it's worse than you say, both because the girl pursued the guy at every turn, up until the last piece, the man usually followed the girl's wishes, and the last bit is out of place for the character, unless the whole story is condenseable to "all men call me a whore".

Does anyone have any experience constructing loft beds? I'm thinking of installing one in the apartment and moving both the computers underneath to clear up some tabletop space. Specifically, I'm wondering how they hold up under more energetic activities. If it's the sort of thing you need to take it easy with, I may as well sacrifice some ceiling to mattress head space to give more room for the computer area below.

I'll tell basically what happened and why I ghosted this person, but I'll play up her flaws for effect and really portray her as a repulsive loser (and explain away the implausibility by saying I was attracted to how unattractive she was). Then I'll post links to it on twitter and see if feminists will agree that the woman in "Psychotic nurse with attachment issues and no common sense" is a TERRIBLE PERSON.

DRINK PERSON

Kirb met Judi on a Monday afternoon, while he was enjoying his year abroad in the UK at the University of Bristol. He had just opened the door of the hallway of his college dorm when he noticed her: she was down on her knees and looked frustrated.

"Don't move!" she said loudly as he closed the door "Not even a step. Stay exactly where you are"

Kirb was puzzled, but decided to obey nonetheless. The girl turned around, squinted her eyes and flashed him a bright smile. "Thanks." Kirb saw that she was an attractive brunette, very pale-skinned, with a small nose ring and dark eye-shadow. She wouldn't have looked out of place in a punk rock concert, he thought, and if she went there she could have easily posed for pictures with the band.

"You're welcome" he replied, still confused. "Is this a new kind of college game or is there an ax maniac lurking in the hallways and you're here to warn me?" he added tentatively, trying to make the odd situation less awkward.

Judi chuckled. "If there was an ax maniac, I'd probably be on his side." She squinted her eyes again. "I've lost my contacts" she explained, in a sheepish tone. "I'm blind as a bat without them, and I really don't want people to step on them, they're the last pair I've got and my glasses are broken."

"Oh" said Kirb, mentally slapping himself for not having understood what was going on. It seemed so obvious now. "Do you need help finding them?"

"Would you? Thanks you!" Judi stood up and offered him a hand. "I'm Judi, and most days I'm not yelling people not to move while I'm on the floor"

"Kirb here" He shook her hand "And most days I'm not finding people who yell at me not to move while they're on the floor"

Judi chuckled again. "Let's get to work then, I really need my contacts back".

Kirb's gaze scanned the floor, until he noticed a glimmer in a corner. He knelt to pick up a pair of transparent contact lens . "There they are" He handed them to her.

Judi smiled at him, grateful "Good to know that there are still decent people out there" Kirb shrugged, but smiled back.
