I'm not trying to police anyone's behavior, only asking why we should focus on this stuff. And yes, it includes pretty much all the Watson stuff with the dog and her boyfriend. Quite frankly, what's the point?Brive1987 wrote:Sorry Kirb - but that tweet demands an equal and opposite reaction.

I understand pointing out the hypocrisy of PZ pontificating on other people's sex lives as if he were some kind of absolute moral authority on what's sexually appropriate (when he carries on promoting his tentacle porn fetish), but there's a line between laughing at a self-righteous hypocrite and obsessing about the personal and private lives of complete strangers, and I think that some comments here have crossed it.
Especially since PZ isn't a graphomaniac over-sharer like Carrier. We don't know the details of PZ' sex or family life, only some hints, and quite frankly I don't think we need to know or care or speculate more about that.
Yes, he's a lol-cow, and his moral standards are laughably inconsistent, but there's no need to get personal. It's not productive, it's not very clever, it's not needed.

Thank Dog for that!We don't know the details of PZ' sex...life
I still think that collaterals (family, friends, kids...) are a no-go zone. If some here wish to indulge in the mocking, I will only say I separate myself from such.
Still, there are some funny joke potentials.
What to do, what to do...

But I thought testosterone has nothing to do with that aggressive male behaviour? Can these people finally make up their mind about nature and nurture?Kirbmarc wrote:Found in the comment of a feminist article:
We recognize the masculine traits in most other mammals and neuter them to stop their overly aggressive sexual behavior and violence. Yet with humans we refuse to see it and treat testicles as sacrosanct. We need to start neutering men who can't control themselves and hurt society, removing those who's testosterone is out of control from the gene pool and leaving the more well adjusted men to be the fathers of the next generation.

But but but ...
Can we still mock daughter's green sludge dinners? Or Mary's snow shovling while PZ plays? Or their silent dinners at restaurants? What about the irony of soldier-son? Trophy wife and vibrators?
Why can PZ introduce his personal life at will in often a politicised manner with counter strokes sending the pit to the fainting couch?
I call bullshit on this selective "oh my"
And with that I go to bed.

Yes, but the decision is influenced by inputs, amongst which would be arguments against frying people and pressure from the electorate.feathers wrote:But even if we are deterministic at brain-level, then our decision to fry a criminal on the chair is just as determined as the criminal's decision to kill someone.Shatterface wrote:Determinism breaks down at the subatomic level. If the human brain is a physical object this indeterminisn plays a role. The only way indeterminism would not play a role is if the 'mind' was not governed by physical processes.
Are we going by the strict definitions of deterministic and non-deterministic taken from automaton theory, or the more simplified meanings which hinge on the existence of a ghost in the machine?

Sorry, PZ is an hypocrite, what with his students-as-mermaids sex dreams, hentai rape porn fetishes and "true vulval feel" ickyness. So when he poses as a chaste gallant, he's fair game for ridicule. We Americans love our dichotomy and our underdogs. Sarsour (sp?) is sort of the anti-Trump. The fact that Trump is not completely wrong in all things is lost on much of the left, and they simply look for his opposite. Most Americans do not handle nuance well.Kirbmarc wrote:WHY? It's pretty bad. Cheap by Disney standards too. I don't think it's a good movie at all, but there's some fun to be had by looking at just what it is the fans seem to like the most.Phil_Giordana_FCD wrote:I just watched Frozen for the first time. How is that piece of shit getting so much praise?
So you've got the two sisters. One's the main character, yet oddly she's not the popular one. Everybody is fucking obsessed with Elsa, who's as white as you can get without being albino. I think the fanbase didn't get the memo from feminism that they're supposed to root for assertive action heroines and not passive pretty princesses who did nothing to earn their status or (literal magic) power.
But maybe, just maybe, that's the character most little girls actually want to be.

Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
It sure isn't. But if you're not for one thing, you must be for the opposite, according to modern thinking. It seems that you are either entirely for emigration, take 'em all in, poor dears, or build a wall to keep them all out, the terrorist bastards. You are either pro-Trump, and would excuse him kissing Putin's feet on the Capital steps, or Trump is a demon whose every idea should be opposed no matter what.Kirbmarc wrote:Trump is a moron and a con artist who, when he's right, is only right by accident, but still, that's not a good reason to give a platform to the Ann Coulter of islam.CaptainFluffyBunny wrote:We Americans love our dichotomy and our underdogs. If Trump is against Muslims and a misogynist and finds sharia law evil, why then the regressive left will find the opposite and espouse that person, no matter how contrary those person's ideology is to classic liberal ideals. Again, no nuance. If one thing is bad, find the opposite and declare it good.
It's becoming disturbingly common, and not just in the United States. The whole idea of nuanced positions is not only unpopular, it is actively mocked by people on either side. Tribalism for the win. :bjarte:
Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
I saw a very dumb argument that went something like: "If you say black and white thinking is bad and nuance is good that itself is the same kind of dichotomy you claim to be against."
Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
LoL. Nothing like painting with an overly broad brush - "four legs good, two legs bad" FTW! (Although I largely agree with your earlier comments about cheap shots directed PZ's way.) But somewhat apropos of that MO:Kirbmarc wrote:Trump is a moron and a con artist who, when he's right, is only right by accident, but still, that's not a good reason to give a platform to the Ann Coulter of islam.CaptainFluffyBunny wrote:We Americans love our dichotomy and our underdogs. And a balanced and nuanced post (and a cogent comment thereon even if I do say so myself ...) over at Quillette by Cathy Young on Trump's "Western civilization" speech in Poland:

I agree that Trump isn't the Nazi Rapist Baby-Killing Demon that far too many in the left think he is. But he's still a bad president: nepotistic, incompetent, scientifically illiterate, a fan of simplistic thinking and conspiracy theories, probably corrupt, surely inocherent and confused, has shady ties to Russia like Clinton had shady ties to the KSA (at best, we'll see what comes out of the Muller investigation) and has a terrible track record when it comes to delivering what he's promised to do (see Trump University, Trump Steak, Trump Casino, etc. etc.).Steersman wrote:LoL. The "Western civilization" speech in Poland wasn't the Secret Nazi Screed that the "Resistance" believes it is, but a) it likely wasn't written by Trump, and is delivery is atrocious and b) it's not entirely clear what he meant in some points. The article by Cathy Young is rather clear about that.

Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
Why is Steers a part of the discussion?
Really, the bot is just reposting his wank-fest twitter shit. I don't care, and I bet many Pit people don't either.
"Nonetheless" "a propos", "Gander for the goose" whatever. This bot is getting on my nerves. No need to reply, Steers.

So he's a net positive then.
People will have to stop looking to government(s) to solve their problems - and start doing things for themselves.
Perhaps this the 'libertarian moment' that Nick Gillespie at Reason talks so much about.

At least he has learned to be more concise. Far better than the word vomit he used to engage in. To be fare, on occasion the does bring up an interesting subject or two.

Both of which went out the window (on this topic) when I joined the Pit.MarcusAu wrote:You will have to use your own judgement.Brive1987 wrote:But but but ...
Commentary on such matters should be proscribed (if necessary) by your own sense of decorum and good taste.
The man's a cunt and everything he publicly posts is ripe for ridicule.

Since you joined the 'Pit?
I thought you had always been Australian.

Also, if you don't care, how can he get on your nerves?

I still think he could manage some malevolence if he tried. Enough people still read his blog that if he wanted to dox some more people, or go back to his "always name names" strategy (of calling people out) he could probably do some damage. I get the feeling that PZ is a bit tired of the whole "naming names" thing, though. The same call out strategy he milked for clicks tore his blog network apart, and it also backfired as it left him open to charges of hypocrisy. I think he sees what that approach got him, and he's sick of having a target on his back.Guest_84d94f98 wrote:Is PZ still in anyway harmful or a threat to anyone? His reputation within the atheist/skeptic community is probably lower than Aleksandr Kolpakav. Now at best he occasional gets invited to debate bigfoot fans at the loony convention.Really? wrote:Please don't refer to PZ as a baby walrus. The only people left available to be harmed by him are this poor students who are clueless as to what they are getting themselves into by subjecting themselves to his authority.

I could be wrong, though. I don't really go to his blog anymore, so it could be that he's trying to witch hunt people and stir shit, and the only difference is that now no one gives a fuck.

What was the name of the dog in Dambusters again? Don't say it though!! A Tory MP, just down the road from me in Newton Abbott, Devon has been suspended for saying "Nigger in the woodpile" in Parliament.
She should have said "cunt" instead, don't you think?
