You have a ready refutation for this? https://twitter.com/SteersMann/status/9 ... 4051528704Kirbmarc wrote:Arel is an ideological idiot (no news here) but DACA is actually a reasonable program with good requirements that solves the issues of people who are already in the US, already integrated within the American system (students or high school graduates or people who have served in the US military) and who must have a clear criminal record. We're not talking about "open border" policies, we're talking about a policy made to solve the issue of people who have lived in the US, studied in the US, and need a way to complete their integration within American society since they're likely going to stay (they also have travel restrictions while they benefit from the program).MacGruberKnows wrote:Dan Dan Dan

Kind of a sad though that the US in particular is crippled by partisan - and identity - politics, particularly as the "fundamentals" are sound. All a friend can say is, "ain't it a shame" ....

Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
I watched Season 1 when it first aired, and would say only Breaking Bad at its peak compared to it in quality. I recall every episode glancing at my watch during the final commercial break and aching to realize I had only 10 more minutes in this world before I had to put it aside again for a whole miserable week. In Season 2, they really played up the twisted soap opera aspect of it, probably because they now had the traditional full season complement of 22 episodes to do (It's evident now that a top quality TV show can't be sustained for over 10 episodes per season). I did rewatch both seasons about 5 years ago and thought season 1 held up really well and season 2 was better than I remembered it, but I think that's just because I knew I could skip over any scene with James or the Andy/Lucy/Dick Tremayne love triangle.jet_lagg wrote:Re: Twin Peaks. I'd never seen the series until recently, when I decided to watch the whole thing in preparation for the continuation. The first season was incredible. The second season was a monumental chore that really pushed me to the breaking point. Fire Walk With Me was short, which I was inclined to see as an act of mercy from Lynch, so worn down was I by the time I got there. Finally, I was able to watch the pilot of the new series and promptly decided not to waste another 16 hours of my life following someone who was clearly walking in circles. With everyone talking about the finale I'm feeling the tug of TV geekdom's gravity again though.
FWWM is a slog, and I'm pretty sure Lynch meant it to be the first of several Twin Peaks sequels that covered similar ground to The Return, but it was such a box office and critical disaster it ended things for 25 years. I would definitely recommend watching The Missing Pieces, a set of deleted scenes from FWWM that you can see on YouTube, before watching The Return.
The Return is both in spirit and plot an extension to Fire Walk with Me, not the TV series, although does inject some Season 1 style humor and quirkiness to make it less a slog. It's also has higher quality writing than FWWM and covers hugely more ground in the Twin Peaks mythology.
Another recommendation: watch this in a darkened room on a quality HDTV with either a good surround sound system or headphones. As an artist, I've read Lynch sees himself mostly as a photographer and sound designer and it really comes through here, especially in the sound.
I should point out, though, some of the special effects are laughably bad. I would presume Lynch considers CGI a crutch and much prefers to use camera tricks if he thinks he can get away with it, but by modern standards it looks kind of cheesy. When CGI is used, it looks like they did it on the cheap, which really isn't an excuse because it's certainly possible nowadays to have cheap high quality CGI if some craft is put in it. I don't know why Lynch, who is a notorious perfectionist, relaxes his standards so much when it comes to special effects, which was evident in his version of Dune as well. There's even a quick moment in Ep. 17 that looks like a clip from an '80s video game. On the other hand, the notorious episode 8, which has the most reliance on special effects, has quite good CGI (I wonder if they blew the budget on it).

Lynch is hugely over-rated. He does a fantastic job of building atmosphere and suspense for about 2/3 of anything he does and then it falls apart. It isn't non-linear, ambiguous or avoiding a pat Hollywood ending, it's that he simply can't think of a third act and throws a bunch of random shit together and calls it done.
Re: In 2017 Idiocracy is a Documentary
Did I say it was all about identity politics, ya dingus? My "identity politics" comment was clearly in response to a tweet by some dyed-in-the-wool Clinton supporter who wouldn't read an alternative viewpoint if her life depended on it. AKA - identity and partisan politics - QED.Sunder wrote:No, DACA is not all about identity politics, ya dingus.
But since you're quoting CATO - which clearly puts economic costs over legal and social ones - you might take a look at a post by, I assume, the Brookings Institute, particularly this:
"Dysfunctional", indeed. Wonder why that might be ....There is widespread agreement among policymakers and the public that the nation’s immigration system is outdated and dysfunctional. The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986, now nearly 30 years old, legalized approximately 3 million residents and was the last large-scale legalization program for unauthorized immigrants living in the United States. Twenty-five years ago the Immigration Act of 1990 overhauled U.S. immigration admissions policy, creating the current system that annually admits approximately 1 million permanent residents and hundreds of thousands on temporary visas. From 1990 to 2013 the number of foreign-born persons living in the United States more than doubled, from 20 million to more than 41 million. The number of immigrants who are estimated to be unauthorized in the United States is currently more than 11 million, up from 3.5 million when IRCA was passed.

My takeaway as well. Same as Damon Lindelof always writing himself into a corner. So many twists, so many turns. Is there any possible way to bring this all together by the end? No? Fuck it. I'll still probably watch the rest of the show. I just needed time to cool down after that pilot.

Has anybody noticed this from the ever-increasingly deluded Guardian in the UK? There is shock, horror, and disgust at the fact that the UK publishing industry is "90% white", in a country where 82% (I think) of people are white. This is based on 1,000 or so respondents to a survey.
But wait, the fact that 84% of the respondents were women, is buried in the article, and doesn't seem to cause the sensitive snowflakes at the Graun any issues. 84% is not very diverse, and far further from 51% that 90% is from 82%. Also, some bod is quoted as saying there needs to be a diversity ratio of 60/40. Erm, why 60/40? That would massively over-represent non-white people. Unless, of course, they mean representive of metropolitan luvvies in Guardian-land. I fucking hate these privileged overpaid London hacks.

Looks like Gab.ai will have to move to a new registrar at some point though.
Gab claims that there is no free speech DNS provider.
However their current DNS provider has highly restrictive requirements beyond what I would expect from most registrars.
Plus .ai is an Anguilla root name. So they are going to have to comply with their nation's laws. If you want a free speech platform, you really want to be hosted in the US where fear of governmental interference for free speech is nearly zilch.

Actually I think this is an important part of the SocJus phenomenon. This actually isn't anything new. Middle class people scoffing at working class people for not following their rules is a consistent part of some leftist policies. They were called "latte liberal" or "champagne socialists" in the past. In Switzerland they're known as "radical-chic".Really? wrote:More on that trans woman who hates white people.

Basically they're people from economically privileged backgrounds who embrace left-wing movements and claim to be in favor of the oppressed but actually spend most of their time calling working class people stupid or bigoted or afflicted by "false consciousness". They're more interested in looking morally good than in solving issues, and are self-righteous to an annoying degree.

What's not to like?
Henry (John Nance) resides alone in a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom. When he discovers that an earlier fling with Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) left her pregnant, he marries the expectant mother and has her move in with him. Things take a decidedly strange turn when the couple's baby turns out to be a bizarre lizard-like creature that won't stop wailing. Other characters, including a disfigured lady who lives inside a radiator, inhabit the building and add to Henry's troubles.

Lynch is definitely overrated, but man do I have fond memories of Blue Velvet. My friends and I must've seen it a dozen times. We'd go to midnight showings and act out or reply to characters on screen. My girlfriend could do the entire Laura Dern dream about robins, from heart. Mulholland Dr. (the literal name of the movie, and the distinction is important as it gives a clue as to what's going on) is probably the most accessible of his 'weird' movies, as there's a relatively simple, non-obscure explanation for almost all the weirdness, and there's a compelling sad story behind the weirdness.Matt Cavanaugh wrote:I forgot about MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Another FUBAR-script piece of shit from the master of disjointed shit.Brive1987 wrote:Mulholland Drive was very good.Matt Cavanaugh wrote: Lynch is shit. Twin Peaks was a gimmick. Blue Velvet isn't all that weird in plot structure, it's just an extremely hard edged loss of innocence story. I think it's good, but overrated, with the term 'masterpiece' being thrown around too loosely. Another movie Dennis Hopper did at this time, the now obscure River's Edge, covered some similar ground and was better, in my opinion. Arguably, Lynch did an homage to it by placing Laura Palmer's body on a beach at the river's edge at the very beginning.
While on balance I'm a Lynch fan, I understand the hate. I don't think I've had a more unpleasant time at the theater than watching Wild at Heart. Dune was a travesty. I've never seen Inland Empire, but based on what I've heard about it, I'm almost certain I'll hate it.

"Digital Terrorism." In other words they are going to DDOS some low grade websites. Sure one of them could have the skills to temporarily take out DNS infrastructure, but the Feds would be on them like fleas on Watson's mingy dog.
More sophisticated infrastructure attacks like the electric grid would require industry specific work experience, in addition to technical expertise. Work isn't exactly their strong suit there.
The worst I think they could do is target major retailers/payment processors during the holiday shopping season. But all that really does is differ sales by a day or two.
Maybe mass flagging campaigns scaring off advertisers?
I also don't think communism themed memes are really going to take off.
There is plenty more they could do. But that would require them not attacking from the keyboard.

Charles Manson has the same kind of personality that would have inspired a religion back in the day. Today there's too much competition of diverse ideas, and the rule of law is pretty strong, but he still managed to get a smaller cult following. Anyway it's interesting to study the dynamics of the "Manson family" to get a better understanding at how charismatic personalities can rope in seemingly previously sane followers no matter how depraved the thing they do are.feathers wrote:Going to be reversed by Brown. In the relatively lawless and certainly violent world of centuries ago there were countless charismatic figures more or less like Manson, especially in areas where bands of raiders were free to operate. Those who happened to become popular in a multi-ethnic empire are the origins of today's major religions.

No. Brown is the most cravenly gutless politician California ever produced. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will do the most expedient, safest (for him) thing possible.feathers wrote:Going to be reversed by Brown. Me and my friends were huge fans back then. Like the obnoxious teens we would walk around quoting the lines of a statistical rapist all the time. You couldn't buy those beers outside the US at the time (dunno if you can now), but a friend of mine was an exchange student and got us a 6-pack when returning home. They were the coolest thing ever. The beer tasted strange to us, but the cans, oh my, the cans would be washed and refilled so we could be rapist fanboys next friday. So yes, the pit is a safe haven for rapists fansHunt wrote:FUCK THAT SHIT!!!! PABST BLUE RIBBON!
You have to wonder what PBR thought of Blue Velvet. Can't you imagine a group of executives at a meeting: "Uh, is this a good thing or a bad thing?"

I walked out of blue velvet when I was a teenager. Only movie I've ever done that to.
Freaky. But not in a pleasant way.

Would that be "becoming known as The Man Who Released A Manson Follower"?Hunt wrote:No. Brown is the most cravenly gutless politician California ever produced. The two Pabst cans on each side are from the 1950s. The can in the middle is from 1938. And unlike current wussy aluminum cans, they were made with 100% U S Steel !!! Don't know if Pabst is sold anywhere outside the US, but Lone Star Light is sold in Malaysia. The can even has a pic of the US and Texas flags on the side:Snapfingers wrote:Me and my friends were huge fans back then. I guess the guilty (or at least murderers) are damned for all time - at least according to some.
Most killings are one time only occurrences - and Leslie Van Houten is not likely to kill again.
Anyway John Waters said it best:
