I actually read her book. It is pretty mild really. It is, of course, very pro police. It lays out the case for the "Ferguson Effect" and how cops in some places are becoming too cautious. It is also very supportive of proactive policing such as stop and frisk. Of course... this means she is a dirty racist according to the left.
I have been spending a bunch of time with our local cops. I took some training at the police station and even fired a Glock 40 at the range. I am gonna start citizen patrolling in my neighborhood. The cops insist that we are unarmed and do not intervene in incidents. I will work with a sort of dispatcher that will tell me where my eyes are needed. For example, if there was a house break in on a certain block we will drive around there as often as possible, check license plates, and look for anything fishy. We are only supposed to observe and call 911.
Anyway.... I have a much better understanding of cops these days. The good ones (and there are lots of good ones) are really impressive. Serious and professional. Like everything else though, there are people of various characters in the profession. They don't get paid that much... but most of them will run at something dangerous while the rest of us run away.
There is not enough media coverage of the cases where cops are really heroic... like the school cop who killed the shooter in the school recently... I mean... he heard shots and ran toward them on his own... with no backup. That kind of thing actually chokes me up a bit. How could someone do that... and if I were a cop could I do that?
