You really shouldn’t take my take without watching.
You actually watched 1:40.00 of that video? :o
I watched less than 6 minutes and that is all I could stand. I'm happy to take your word about whatever points were made during that borefest.

It takes a lot longer than than when you take notes.

It didn’t really start for 10-15 mins.

Meanwhile PZ has defined what open borders vs ICE really means.
Sessions: asylum seekers are like criminals breaking into your house.

Real analogy: your neighbor’s husband is shot and killed. She flees to your house with her baby. When she knocks, you call the police and have her arrested for trespassing.

She never sees her baby again.
Now that’s looney. More like “her husband only gives her $5 groceries so she crosses 10 backyards to get to yours and demands to become wife 2. So you slam the door.”

I counted 5 cuts in the first 40 seconds. One can only imagine the “umms” and “errs”.

Dude needs to invest in some auto prompt software. It’s not like his delivery could be any more stilted.

It's bizarre to see him continue with the "quirky" and "wacky" antics when everyone knows he's a mean, flea-bitten old hyena.

I would never have guessed he'd want this so much. It turns out he's as much a vain, preening brat as Rebecca. Is he really really going to keep fucking around on the Tube instead of writing that book?

PZ should stick to biology as he clearly sucks at making and using analogies; he may wish to reflect on mine about niggers and cunts ... ;-) .

But surprising the number of people who are nonplussed if not apoplectic in response to that one of "criminals breaking into your house", even those who should know better ;-)

Absolutely bizarre. He is still wearing hats, because man did that haircut bite deep into his ego. And he has developed a couple of catchphrases: "Hello friends", and "Talk to you later". Now these little speech bubble popouts are becoming a thing too. I can't wait until he stumbles across an h3h3 video and starts coughing and pulling the fatface.

That C-clamp on the scaffold, behind the longhair, is called a 'half-cheese'. It looks like the back of his head went right-into the protruding bolt. Ouch.

Eeps! It's a good thing the guy couldn't put his weight behind the punch.

Is it me, or is the puncher brown-ish? This is a textbook case of punching down. Whitey had it coming, we'll think of a reason later.

I'd bet pounds to pennies that the Chinese students have done this so they can work hard, study effectively, and leave university with a great degree.

Likewise, that the marshmallow dollops who want LGBT dorms are doing it because the half-hour of lectures per week they attend for their BA in Xenogender and Polyamorous Coupling Studies leaves them lots of spare time to contemplate a bleak, jobless future unless they can show a track record of such useless busybodying to whichever local council has a spare 100 grand to spunk away on a Team Leader: Department of Lesbian Travelers and Homeless Bolivian Midgets.

If it was anything like my sons school, it was so they could culturally lock together + speak mandarin. There were definite so (informally) designated parts of the playground.

To be honest, if I found myself parachuted into a Chinese city to study, I’d probably look for an English speaking corner with (halal free) vegemite. There’s only so much change a koala can bear.

It’s hard to break with in-group preference, even if your identity aligns with a blue haired dyke.

Here is a definition of IdentPol:

“a tendency for people of a particular religion, race, social background, etc., to form exclusive political alliances, moving away from traditional broad-based party politics”

I get confused here because “traditional party politics” was rooted in a largely mono cultural context. Can an alliance designed to reassert tradition be said to be moving away from said tradition? Or is the multiculti of the past 30 odd years now our “tradition”? How far can “etc” be stretched? Was New Atheism (which sought political traction) identity politics? How about economic idenitarianism like communism?

The Dems have shown time and again they are expert at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. If they insist on letting the loony left from taking over the party as they appear to be doing they are going to chase away independents and disenfranchised Repubs, and give the more moderate faction of the Dems to stay home.
It's sad but the Repubs will likely keep power in the midterms and could reelect Trump if he manages to stay out of jail.
The GOP already was an uneasy alliance of 'old-fashioned' conservatives, neocons, redneck gun loons, batshit christian fundamentalists and absolutist free-market libertarians. Now they'll also have to accommodate mildly leftwing progressives. Shouldn't be too difficult.

This time around, Peez has a couple of cards up his sleeve.

One: he has Natural Revelation, the original rejected manuscript. It was the book his first editor was working on when he went insane. The one that Greg Laden had probably read when he submitted that seemingly fraudulent review of the Happy Atheist to Amazon. It'll just need an edit and polish (which can take longer than writing it, so his fucking around might still bite him in the ass).

Two: 3 years ago he coyly revealed he was already writing material for a book. He could have a substantial amount of the work done already. Or it might even be finished.

https://imgur.com/3OiMmiJ.png

But then... this is Peez, who has a spectacular capacity for wreckage and blame. So, in spite of all the head starts he might've had, I have little confidence that he can produce a book before his sabbatical ends. Certainly not without massive storms of rage and drama

Having been in a few shield walls in my time... Most of what I see in these videos makes me shake my head in disbelief at the poor tactics - not that I want either side to be effective, but...

Let's just say that it's not the person in front of you that you should be worried about.

And yes, SD, I think his head smacks into the pole. I'm not sure its into the C-clamp thingy, but ouch :violin: .

Now that I've thought about it for a bit... he might be scared he can't arrest his site's free-fall into oblivion. I don't remember where I saw it, but not too long ago someone had data that showed The Atheist Experience is outdrawing Pharyngula. That would mean Peez is no longer King of the house he built, which is astonishing. When Pharyngula moved to FtB from ScienceBlogs, it alone was pulling in more than 3 million visitors a month.

Also, he was complaining on video last week that his new second-stringers couldn't draw flies, regardless of what he did to help them. He must be monstrously deluded about his ability to confer popularity, because I can't think of another reason why he'd figure replacing the original BLOGGERS with his idiot HORDE wouldn't crater FtB's rankings. Instead of Benson and Christina, give 'em Caine and Nate Hevens, yeah that'll pull 'em in

And last year, after 5 years of complaints, Peez chucked the notorious skeevy ads. He'd said many times he couldn't find advertisers that provided comparable revenue, so losing those was almost certainly a financial hit. With only 2 blogs as potential money-makers, and Pharygula's audience diminished from glory days, FtB might not be able to pay for itself anymore

BBC chief stunned as secret staff sex survey reveals 417 of the corporation's workers are transgender

The BBC has more than 400 transgender staff, a confidential internal survey has revealed.

The figure represents more than one in 50 of the workforce – about four times higher than the proportion in the population at large.

And it stunned the BBC executive behind the research, who described the total number of trans employees, at 417, as 'very, very high'.

Tunde Ogungbesan, the BBC's director of diversity, has now launched a major reform to make the Corporation more 'trans-friendly' following the findings.

The issue of trans rights has divided Britain, with a split between traditionalists who believe gender is assigned at birth and progressives who believe a liberal society should make strides against any form of discrimination towards trans people.

Using personal information about BBC staff that 'only a couple of people would ever know', Mr Ogungbesan also revealed that 11 per cent of BBC employees were lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

But he said he did not regard the BBC as diverse enough, claiming more lesbians were needed.

Of the Corporation's 21,239 staff, almost a quarter declined to reveal their orientation.

Of the remainder 2.2 per cent said they were bisexual, 4.8 per cent were gay men and 1.3 per cent lesbian.

Of the whole UK, 2 per cent of people say they are lesbian, gay or bisexual, according to official figures from 2016.

The BBC's research comes as the Government prepares to announce plans to make it less stressful and bureaucratic for people to be able to change gender.

Equalities Minister Penny Mordaunt, who will launch a consultation on Tuesday, has told Cabinet colleagues she regards it as 'one of the most important issues facing modern British society'.

Mr Ogungbesan revealed his findings at a conference attended by senior civil servants, doctors and transgender rights campaigners earlier last month.

He teasingly told them: 'Can someone have a guess at how many people have disclosed they are transgender at the BBC. Ten? Anyone else? Twenty? Not bad. One more? I will put you out of your misery. We've got 417... almost two per cent. That is very, very high.'

Mr Ogungbesan told the Westminster Social Policy Forum that the results would lead to the rewriting of the BBC's 'style guide', which sets out the rules on 'fairness and terminology' at the corporation.

He added: 'What we are on is a journey within the BBC... if we can create a culture where everyone feels they can bring their best work into the organisation and with that you can begin to change from within the thought processes and the ways people behave and the way they broadcast their programmes, then we would have achieved what we are trying to do.'

Last night, critics expressed fears that BBC producers could be forced to shoehorn politically- correct storylines about transgender people into programmes.

Nicola Williams, from feminist group Fair Play For Women – which objects to men being able to self-identify as women – said she was concerned about possible changes to the Corporation's output.

The BBC understands the benefit of a diverse and inclusive organisation. We have moved away from the normal areas of diversity, gender and ethnicity and expanded it to include sexual orientation and trans, class, religion, thought processes and social economic diversity.

We want to ensure 8 per cent of our people are from the LGBT community by 2020. We did a census to make sure that we could put the information we have of individuals on to their records, but it was also anonymous. Only a couple of people would ever know that data, I am one…

No one else would know anything about the ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender of anyone within the BBC and it was important to buy in the whole of the organisation, just over 21,000 people. The results were fascinating.

Can someone have a guess at how many people we've got who have disclosed that they are transgender in the BBC? Ten? Anyone else? Twenty? Not bad. One more? I will put you out of your misery, we've got 417 people within the BBC who have said they are transgender, almost 2 per cent of the organisation, which is very, very high. If you have a figure like that you have to think how you make the BBC inclusive – because people have trusted you.

We have looked at how we work with people who are trans, or thinking of transitioning, within the organisation.

We do not operate an official dress code… and recognise the importance of using an individual's preferred pronoun and using a pronoun incorrectly could amount to bullying and harassment.

We are committed to supporting employees who choose to transition, including providing for paid time off for medical appointments, treatments and surgical procedures in line with the managing health and attendance policy.

We have launched four new work streams to look at the culture and career progression of under-represented groups within the BBC. We felt that we didn't need one around LGBT because our figures were quite high in terms of our percentages – 11 per cent of BBC employees say that they are LGBT and, of that 11 per cent, 12 per cent are in leadership positions.

Then some people said... they are mainly the Gs [gay] and the Bs [bisexual], so the lesbians and the transgender folk, the figures are not as high as you would want them to be, especially with the lesbians.

We needed a fifth work stream around LGBT, which will be starting in the next couple of weeks, with an apology to the organisation for not starting with them in the first place.

People thought Galileo was mad because he thought the earth revolved around the sun. Everyone else thought the sun revolved around the earth. But he said 'measure what is measurable and find a way to measure that what is not' – and it is very important.

Because what gets measured gets done, and the fact that we have measured in the BBC and know what the figures are, has helped us move the agenda forward.

Our goal is to create a culture where everyone feels they can bring their best work and begin to change the thought processes and ways people behave and broadcast their programmes.

We are looking at the style guide… we are on a journey.

'The BBC already refers to trans women as 'women' without challenging the idea,' she said.

The BBC's trans employees include local radio presenter Stephanie Hirst.

And two years ago, it was at the centre of controversy over the CBBC series Just A Girl, which portrayed an 11-year-old called Amy transitioning from a boy to a girl.

But it has also been accused of being transphobic: in May, comedian Peter Kay was criticised for a joke in his Car Share show about a transgender woman.

A BBC spokesman said: 'Tunde was clearly speaking about the work we're doing to improve the culture at the BBC. He wasn't referring to taking an editorial position on transgender issues.'

One of the main arenas will be the expression stage, an open space where anyone can perform; there will also be a creativity tent, where participants can volunteer to run workshops in skills such as basket weaving and cloth making. In the “women circle” area, festivalgoers will be invited to share their stories, songs and prayers; a space called the “womyn rising tent’” is, according to the festival website, set aside for healing and learning and women will be encouraged to “delve into themselves … to learn and love through discussions and workshops”.

The “sacred womb tent” will provide “a sacred space … for contemplation”, while the “embodiment tent” will offer yoga, dance and circus workshops. Masseuses and therapists will be on hand in the healing area, and there will be workshops at which participants can paint their body scars gold, to celebrate surviving suffering. A spa centre will include a swimming lake, sauna and hot tubs – and the opportunity for yoni steaming, the practice of vaginal herbal cleansing made famous by aficionado Gwyneth Paltrow.

It's not the alleged secrecy of the report I thought was interesting.

It's the over-representation of trans in the organisation, and the unquestioning support the BBC is giving to the movement.

Divided Democrats are in danger
Recently, the most progressive circles of the Democratic Party have pushed for an increasingly extreme agenda, and in some cases, have espoused rhetoric that amounts to thinly veiled calls for violence against political opponents.
[….]
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand … joined the rallying cry of those furthest to the left by calling for the abolishment of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). … The idea of abolishing ICE is ridiculous. The agency serves a fundamental and legal role in our country. Democratic candidates, and now a prominent senator, calling for this sets the party back significantly.
[….]
Although liberal primary challengers have struggled, they have succeeded in forcing incumbents to shift leftward. Just as Bernie Sanders did to Hillary Clinton in 2016 on issues including the minimum wage and Wall Street regulation, his rise cost her votes in key swing states.

This is a dangerous trend for the Democrats leading into November. In fact, current polls indicate that Democrats with the highest chance of flipping seats in Congress are those that hold moderate and establishment values
[….]
… moderate views can flip seats, and … the further Democratic candidates move to the left, the more they risk isolating themselves within a single radical niche. They won’t appeal to anyone but the faction within their own party, and risk losing seats the Democrats could otherwise flip in a general election. Remember that these far-left views are not held by the masses. Appealing to them will harm any chance of garnering votes from the traditional Democrat.
[….]
Recently, Rep. Maxine Waters … all but called for political violence against Trump administration officials….

This is simply not a Democratic Party that can win in November.
[….]
If the party continues down this path, centrist Democratic voters who previously followed the establishment will likely start leaving the party, and potentially vote for moderate Republicans.
[….]
Centrist voters recognize those in the Republican Party are closer to mirroring their ideals, thus relegating the Democratic Party to its most extreme members. Democrats must restore their faith in a single and more moderate platform and unite behind a message that fights for equal opportunity for all.

P.S. If this stuff is boring folks, I can open a separate "Democrat Seppuku" thread.

Floating Islands...

...apparently they are a type of desert. But there are also various attempts to build artificial ones. I recall a natural one being used in an old Hugh Lofting Dr Doolittle story (from the 1920s) but I wonder if they were known in literature or mythology before that.

I see Driftless is logged in - it sounds like the sort of thing he/she would have a perspective on.

I could have sworn sexuality is, like, "fluid". So, anybody could just class themselves as LGBT to get in. If they wanted to.
