It's a real Baboon Lulz Hour.
I particulary like how EllenBeth is worried about quote mining, since she is friends with a lot of the Baboons that do that day in, day out.

I think he probably just plays dumb on the Internet, but I can't prove that. I can't bring myself to believe that a scientist is actually that stupid.Pitchguest wrote:So, er, Physioprof pitches in:

Seriously, what the fuck is up with this guy? Why does he add extra letters to words? Why does he end most words with an e? :?:
But, it's not really that that matters. Physioprof is a scumbag and if the two of us ever meet in real life, I'm going to put some very uncomfortable questions to him.
It's funny how Ophie is so concerned about people hiding behind pseudonyms, but she gives a complete pass to Physioprof when he makes the absolute worst and most heinous kinds of public smears about a person while hiding behind a fake name.
Seriously. That guy is a pile of garbage.

Maybe he's trying to erase some of his elitist prep school arsewad privilege with regressive spelling. TBH, I find his motivations to be about as intriguing as those of the 2-cm cockroach that was hanging out on the wall of one of the stairwells at work this morning.Pitchguest wrote:So, er, Physioprof pitches in:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH (taking a line from Ophelia)
Ophelia and PZ are reacting to a quick comment I made on a blog earlier whilst on my mobile phone.
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... -stuff-now
http://freethoughtblogs.com/butterflies ... girl-thing
PZ didn't even bother to relay my entire post in context (and the original post which I replied to).
http://i.imgur.com/bVKwT.jpg
At least Ophelia linked my comment...
I brought up needlepoint because this is generally not seen as a 'guy thing' meaning that women overwhelmingly, from either perception or actual numbers, participate in needlepoint. I used this example because, as one commenter noted, of Rosey Grier's "Needlepoint for Men." I used some quick throwaway example of something typically thought of as a 'girl thing' because of stereotypes or actual numbers. As I said, there is no effort to stop males from participating in needlepoint, but it just so happens to be the case that there is a lack of males in this activity.
http://i.imgur.com/QhqXJ.jpg
...and PZ + commenters seem really clueless about this alleged "toxic" and "sexist" gamer culture. Fuck that. The women and men I play with in WoW are respected because of their skill and dedication. If you perform poorly, regardless of what you identify as, you will often be ridiculed by others in one way or another. Semi-hardcore and hardcore players like me don't tolerate terrible players. I've been with some terrible random male players (identified because of voice chat) and have seen them ridiculed pretty badly...and that's not evidence of misandry or the like. Oh, look how hostile the environment is to men!!111one No. Just no.
In situations without voice chat, ridicule happens and genders are largely unknown amidst a climate of some males who play female characters (like me) and females who play male characters. It's not TITS OR GTFO, it's perform or GTFO because I take the game seriously and don't want to waste my time with underperforming players.
PZ says "OH NOEZ LOOK AT ARMOR MODELS." So fucking what if female characters have revealing armor? Does PZ really think that women neglect to play a game because of revealing armor? Besides, many women who are NPCs in WoW have major roles within their factions, are seen as strong, and have a great influence on the game's story. Further, the playing field is EQUAL for both male and female characters in the game; there is no disadvantage or advantage for selecting a character's gender or the gameplay itself as far as stats are concerned.
It's too bad Ophelia and PZ seem to jump to the least plausible and highly irrational conclusion of misogyny/sexism concerning almost everything they see in which there isn't a 50/50 split (and, as Shermer mentioned, a lack of a 50/50 split is not necessarily evidence of sexism...and if it is, I suppose Lifetime is a very sexist network). PZ and Ophelia are no better than theists who see faces of Satan in wet bath towels. In fact, they're quite worse in many respects.
#WitchOfTheWeek
Anyway, and on a more important note, I plan on relaying an important announcement concerning some secular activism I am going to be participating in within the next few days - hopefully Monday at the latest. I plan to be featured in local and regional news because of this if all goes well. Meanwhile, PZ can tote his 'activism' of stabbing a cracker and atheism+ still has nothing to contribute as far as I can tell. Good on them.

PhysioProffe says:
Really, what this is a smokescreen. Any awkward situation with a person they PERSONALLY don't like, they can deem it as lacking in appropriate "context" and thus evidence of misogyny. An identical situation with someone they like, its no problem. So we are expected to just accept this double standard, then somehow be able to read minds and know exactly what the other person is thinking before even bringing up dating, sex, or asking for a phone number. Absurd to the max.
A yes, context. That magical word that these clowns ill-define and can take to mean whatever they want, whenever they want. So apparently Elevatorguy didn't have the appropriate context to ask someone he didn't know for coffee in an elevator, but PZ has it when he asks a woman he doesn't know for sex on a stage in front of an audience and continues to make lewd remarks. Makes sense? This is why it simply does not compute to them that context matters and that it makes a difference who you say something to, when you say it to them, where you say it, and why you are saying it.

Hehehe.
My family didnt force any kind of gender stereotypes on Bro and I. I loved construction sets and hated dolls, bro loved to bake (he would make the treats I brought to class for my birthdays in school), we did gender-neutral sports like golf and bowling. Mom taught us both how to knit (and we both sucked at it). One of my grandmothers taught us both how to sew. She also taught me needlepoint, specifically, crewel, and I loved it (teaching partners girls how to do it now!). Bro wasnt interested.
OH MAH GAWD MY PARENTS WERE SEXIST!!!!!

PZ wrote: Vacula is wrong. The player base is deeply, profoundly sexist, and the designers also perpetuate stereotypes. You can see this in the armor: the very same set of armor can be worn by a male or female: on the male it’s a massive chunk of defensive gear; on the female, strangely, the midriff disappears to leave the stomach bare, and the leggings turn into a skimpy bikini bottom plus an oval plate on the thighs.
So here we have a MAN that claims that scantily clad women and skimpy armor and outfits are viciously sexist and objectifying for WOMEN, and on the other side we have a WOMAN who enjoys having her characters dress like that and who raises some rather mild objections that have to do mainly with practicality (she also has some objections related to body image, in which she acknowledges that the issues affect both men and women).Elsa wrote: I've been playing Dragon Age: Origins and loving it, but I have a deep, dark secret... I kind of miss my chainmail bikini! Yeah... chainmail bikinis... those scanty, sexy outfits we female characters get to wear in most western RPG's that are at all fantasy based.
I have to admit that I have a love/hate relationship with my chainmail bikini. There's something very liberating about prancing through the countryside slaying various beasts and critters while attired as a Dominatrix, but on a larger level it bothers me a bit. Mostly it's an immersion issue. Being an "actual, real-live female" I KNOW that there is no way you can run through the forests wearing 3" heels.
(...)
Reality also intercedes with the whole "boob" thing. Any woman with a C cup or more knows that it's painful to run braless. You have to strap those puppies down... pushing them up just creates the potential for two black eyes
(...)
Weather also plays an immersion role. I can't help but be taken completely out of a game when I see my scantily clad siren skipping through a white winter wonderland in practically no clothing. Brrrrrr!!
(...)
there are times when I want to slip into Morrigan's outfit and be a little more feminine and sexy (unfortunately I can't steal her outfit... I tried!). I guess that while it's nice to feel that sense of power and immersion by being dressed for the occasion appropriately, in a body that could be a real life female... there are still times when wearing a chainmail bikini is kind of fun.
PZ, Y U NO LISTEN TO WOMEN?

Hey everyone! It's been almost a week since I last posted. I had been feeling sick and I thought it was just the flu. Well, it turns out that I am pregnant. My husband is ecstatic. I'm still getting used to the idea. I have been feeling pretty shitty so I may not be on here very much for awhile. Hopefully I'll start feeling better soon. I'm going to try to catch up with all these posts I haven't read now...

I used to sew and knit when I was younger with my mom. I also did most of the cooking and cleaning around the house. My sister only did female stuff (when she wanted to which wasn't often) and my brother was always the macho dude. I think it made me more independent. I can rebuild an engine, kill someone with my bare hands (picked that skill up later in the military) and I've also made quilts and some of my own clothes. My wife loves my cooking and the kids know that I am by far the better cook in the house. When my mom died young (49), I ended up taking over all the "housewife" responsibilities, my dad, brother and sister were all useless. I lived on my own for quite a while and all these skills came in handy. I think gender roles suck.

Musicals are a gay thing.BarnOwl wrote: I'll be the first to admit that I think the (over)reaction to Shermer's statement about the atheist community is ridiculous, and redolent of people who have too much privilege, self-absorption, and time to do anything and everything except actual productive work, but can we stop referring to "guy things" and "girl things" please? Whatever the intent, it has the flavor of oversimplified thinking, and the terminology is reminiscent of one of those annoying 1950s musicals set in some dead-boring US town.

Warcraft is sexist?
The Warcraft of Jaina Proudmoore and Sylvanus? The Warcraft where every single major playable race is a strictly non-sexist in terms of gender roles?
Myers doesn't have a fucking clue what he's talking about. Yet again, he's casting about utterly erroneous aspersions based upon no evidence whatsoever. He's mouthing off utter shite.
Incidentally, Justin, you fucking better be Horde. Just because.

Myers et al. remind me of the Ikwanis of the Muslim Brotherhood (currently on the rampage in Egypt) - to them, everything that is wrong with history, or goes wrong day to day is due to those ebil Jooooooos, constantly thwarting their paradise on earth.
But for Myers et al., its the same thing but with those evil misogynists constantly thwarting their paradise on earth.
They even have analogues in privilege = original sin.

My husband has already started thinking about names for the baby. Abbie was one of the girl names that he liked. He is an Atheist but he's not aware of most of the people involved in this controversy (Elevatorgate/Atheism Plus). He put that name on the list because he liked it.

The last Warcraft game I played was Warcraft 3 so I went searching to refresh my memory, and found this: http://www.wowwiki.com/Jaina_ProudmooreGit wrote:Warcraft is sexist?
The Warcraft of Jaina Proudmoore and Sylvanus? The Warcraft where every single major playable race is a strictly non-sexist in terms of gender roles?
When a sane person like you and me read that page, this is what we see:
And we think : "That's a strong female character, she's a leader and a powerful wizard, and she helped defeat the Archimonde. She is teh cool"Jaina Proudmoore is the founder and former leader of Theramore Isle, the Alliance's major port in southern Kalimdor. After the destruction of Theramore, she took leadership of the Kirin Tor.[citation needed] She is the daughter of Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, sister of Tandred Proudmoore and Derek Proudmoore, and the alleged half-sister of Finnall Goldensword. She is also the most powerful human sorceress on Azeroth.
But PZ and his lackeys see this:
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... _Jaina.png
And they think : "Wow, her midriff is showing, that's objectifying! That's teh sexist!"
And then they have the guts to say it's us who have a problem with women

Geeze...don't get me started on this topic. My parents were HUGE on gender roles. My dad is a sexist old dog...aka men don't do stuff in the kitchen yadda yadda. But I played soccer, played chase and kiss, knitted, french knitting and crochet ( I was 13 and crocheted my baby brother a blanket). Mum never seemed concerned about pressing a stereotype. Dad.... *sigh*
But get this..at the time I didn't know they were hardocre lesbian feminist but I was 16 years old and involved with a Youth Theatre and I used to like repairing the costumes. I'm sewing away and two women walk in and started making comments like I was a painting in an art gallery...ohh look how his lips curl...do you think he might be jewish?...look how he gracefully threads the needle....THEN they proceed to rate my masculinity and femininity...they gave me a 9 out of 10 for each.... at least that was something hehe. I was disturbed by it hence why I still remember it so clearly...and to top it all off my dad reckons I was gay for doing theatre. I wasn't offended by any of this..just confused because it just didn't make sense.
I've always done what ever took my interest and do it passionately.... never really conformed to gender sterotypes.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
I think Vacula has seriously damaged himself with this latest bullshit. I'm going to start with his "excuse" (yes, let's call it that. If he was fully behind his own words, why would he have written this?):
The original comment was this:
Cunt.
Trying to gently disown something which one has placed into the internet's inescapable electrons is stupid, pointless and reeks of both a lack of conviction and a sense of guilt.Ophelia and PZ are reacting to a quick comment I made on a blog earlier whilst on my mobile phone
The original comment was this:
Now come on, that is fucking ridiculous. It's not witty, it's not snarky, it's not an incisive viewpoint. It's the words of a cunt, and a cunt who is now trying to wriggle out from under the weight of that cuntishness with some Watson-like sleight of hand ("But I was on my cellphone, and it was a quick comment, and - oh, look at that pretty bird - AHA! The coin has gone! Oooooh....").Atheism is a ‘guy thing,’ I would say, like needlepoint is a ‘girl thing.’
Cunt.

Ahahahahaha!
Most of my toons were Alliance but I also had some Horde because some Alliance really just needed to be killed and their body camped.
For fun I would sometimes kill all the auctioneers in Stormwind on my Belf Pally. Then get on my Alliance Pally and do the same to the bankers in Orgrimmar. Good times!
Playing EQ2 now because I got tired to having to L2P every two years among other things (have to admit that I sometimes miss the PVP though).

I do not raid but here is my evil Inquisitor named "Iadore Lucy" without her midriff showing because she is wearing a full set of armour:Altair wrote:But PZ and his lackeys see this:

And they think : "Wow, her midriff is showing, that's objectifying! That's teh sexist!"
And then they have the guts to say it's us who have a problem with women

Thanks, all, for the continued Amazon.com purchases through the search box in the footer. I'll be posting a list of purchases plus commissions at the end of this quarter, and sending Abbie a (smallish) check for (total commission - ISP costs)/2.
Thanks again to everyone who has donated via PayPal, but to people who took the time to add extra snark about me making the effort to add currency-specific donation buttons, kiss my arse.

Congratulations!!! What a shocker, hunh; another one of those "life is what happens when you're making other plans" kind of things. Hope you feel better soon.fascination wrote:Hey everyone!

Bit of early morning Pharyngula. Page 2 in the comment section seems to have gotten a bit interesting. As it generally tends to when noelplum99 posts.

#649 is a good one too, although that's not so funny. Tony really goes off the rails.cunt wrote:franc if you need pics for "things baboons say" this thing is a goldmine.
