AMERICAN!!! Certainly not, I am from the UK. From my experience the far left in the US are what we would call right of centre moderates. I keep hearing idiots over there calling Obama a socialist. If he's a socialist then David Cameron and Gideon Osbourne are Eton's version of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. The rest of the world see these things very differently from the US.
Obama hardly represents the far left (let alone what I would call the progressive left). It's only the crazies on the right who think that Obama is a socialist or marxist. The US has a tradition of left socialist parties, like the UK and the Continent, but they've never had much influence, they're miniscule in membership and typically very sectarian.

And, I might have added, often centered around cults of personality like the US SWP and Revolutionary Communist Party that was centered around its leader "Chairman Bob" (they were maoists LOL!).

Sorry to everyone for the derail. Father Ted (along with Lano and Woodley) is one of my favorite shows, it's midnight, and I feel goofey.

If you want a slightly dilluted contemporary version os Solanas, try Amanda Marcotte, friend of Skepchick and Myers. She has interesting things to say about Lacross players...

I just got finished interacting with the Horde and I think I got at least one worthwhile answer to my question:
When someone expresses a critique of feminism, does your response include the assumption that the criticism is prompted by a hatred of women?
The most useful one:
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... ent-421309
Amphiox
4 August 2012 at 3:36 pm

If that critique of feminism has its foundational argument(s) predicated on the denial of the fundamental equal humanity of women, then it IS an argument prompted by a hatred of women, even if that prompt did not originate with the specific person making that argument, who might be making said argument in ignorance of its foundation.

No assumptions of any kind are required.
This one had a valid point, but was not helpful.

no with a caveat

It depends on the criticism and how is it presented. Some people are just plain obvious. You for example.
I did get one more thing "gaslighting", but they did not appear to appreciate that they use it as a meme.

The rest was the usual. I had hopes for one more response, but alas it was not to be.

Ultimately though, I believe they think I was trolling, particularly as I left them with the comment from my post here about Hunter lumping them into the same category as Stormfront.

Not up to speed on that Marcotte story, but I did notice the line:

"Journalist Cathy Young described Marcotte as a leader of a "cyber-lynch mob"

Even back in 2007, someone noted the cyber-lynch mob tactics of Baboons and their affiliates.

I also like thei threshold of what constitutes justification for "banning". For it seems what gripes they have with Justin, they are trivial compared to the bullying threats displayed by Osama Greg Laden. He is not "banned" or "blocked" by those frothing at the mouth at Justin.

First of all, where did that capitalized "F" come from? Second of all, where did that extra "e" come from? I may have to answer that second question, but that's not a task I'm willing to take on tonight. Bank, laundry, pets...

Thanks. It is important to note here, once again, about what seems to be Ophelia Benson's total unwillingness to address my arguments. Following one of my podcast episodes (http://nepafreethought.org/podcast/episode?p=15) in which I discussed -- among other things -- her 'threatening e-mails' she was so upset that she went on my Facebook wall to express her disapproval that was filled with name-calling and other nonsense. I extended an invitation to her to come on a future show to defend herself and she wanted nothing to do with it. She hasn't even addressed the show and the criticisms on her blog either.

Following that, I commented on her blog asking where these so-called "literal threats of rape and murder" are and she banned me. After this, PZ went about with name-calling on multiple occassions - again not addressing the arguments (or providing evidence for the "literal threats of rape and murder" that can supposedly be found, according to Rebecca Watson, by using Google for ten seconds).

What is preventing them, if they are so upset with me, about providing these "literal threats of rape and murder" to simply end the discussion? I have no reason to believe they exist...and I am even starting to think that 'Elevatorguy' never existed either.

Obviously, individual bloggers don't address every criticism and every person on their blog whom they disagree with, but it seems quite telling that they have failed to address me or the arguments I put forth in light of their only responses to be banning and name-calling.

Neither do my comments, but that's another matter...

Well I can not explain it myself, but I do notice that (with some exceptions), that they are fairly consistant.

My current working hypothesis is that they are emotional rather than logical.

So, in that vein, any criticism is viewed as an unjustified attack and the content of the argument is ignored, because not only is it automatically invalid, it is just a vechile to launch an attack.

In short, you are trying to make sense of, and to an intellectual cripple.

From the above Twitter link:
A few prominent bloggers seem to have trouble distinguishing between actual misogynists and non-misogynists whose only offense is that they disagree with these bloggers in some way. By responding to these two groups in much the same way, many of those who have not made rape jokes, threatened violence, or resorted to personal insults feel like they've been bullied.

Doing that test now, Andrew. I'm a left-libertarian apparently, but not too many squares from the mid-point in either direction. Pretty much in the same place as Nelson Mandela, HAH.

I largely identify as being conservative/right because of all the social justice wankers shitting about the place. Shits 'em off. :)

Come on, now. Larking around at conventions, drinking until 4AM, preparing a boring, pointless speech, thinking up ways to play practical jokes on assistants, etc. is really hard work. What would a white, middle class, privileged brat like Watson do without such luxuries?

I guess we can expect a lot of posts dealing with the objectification of women at this conference? :shhh:

What about harassment? based upon what I found (here) it looks like they are taking away Watson's biggest weapon:
Critical examination of beliefs, including critical commentary on another person’s views, does not, by itself, constitute hostile conduct or harassment. One of the underlying rationales of this policy is to promote the free exchange of ideas, not to inhibit it.
What will she do? :violin:

If not, there should be.

All that is needed is the underlined part, placed between the youtube tags.

I think this is what they consider "threats of rape and murder": http://skepchick.org/2012/07/ask-surly- ... with-hate/

Remember-- these folks live in a privileged world where t-shirts that offend you are considered harassment.

No Twitter account here - I assume that's why I can see some tweets from which others have been blocked. I might need to get an account for work (long weird story), in which case I won't be able to use my 'nym.

Yes-- Ophelia considers the reference to immolation a twitter comment about TAM not having a self-immolation policy ( http://skepchick.org/2012/07/ask-surly- ... with-hate/)to be a death threat:

"Yes, no doubt I’m a horrible person and deserve to be set on fire, but not everyone at “FTB” is a horrible person."

http://freethoughtblogs.com/butterflies ... us-at-all/

So the Rationalia joke is what they think the verified rape threats are and the immolation comment is a "death threat".

(And if you don't agree then you must be a misogynist according to the bullies.) They appear to be desperate to make themselves martyrs for some (imaginary?)cause.

I like this whole paragraph from Orwellia:
Freethought blogs is a network of blogs. There is no editor of all the blogs. There is no directive, there is no style, there is no policy. Once you’ve joined there are no criteria. It’s up to the individual blogger what she writes. There are no leaders. Just yesterday I saw somebody talking nonsense about not reading “FTB” until there was a change in “the leadership.” There is no leadership.
Tell that to Thunderf00t.

Ah, bless. To think that Opheilar still can't understand why she has lost so many friends and has clocked up numerous spats with former colleagues. She still thinks EVERYBODY else is wrong, and she be right. All those intelligent co-writers she once worked with have suddenly lost their senses, eh, Opheliar?

Perhaps one day, an every increasingly lonely Opheliar will wake up and smell the, erm, coffee.

One of the arguments 'for' harassment policies is the whole "Speaking at a conference is like a real job and real jobs have policies so there! When Im at a conference Im working!"

They dont seem to want to extend the "Speaking at a conference is like a real job..." to filling out tax forms, paying income tax on speaker fees/flights/hotels/other payments, or NOT GETTING DRUNK ON THE JOB.

There was an open bar for speakers at FreeOK. I had a Heineken.

Hmmm, I would have hoped for the "threats of rape and murder" they've been rolling out for months...not something that happened within the last 30 days.

Pappa's wasn't a threat anyway.

Light yourself on fire, well...that's just a suggestion, isn't it? Seriously, it's no different than telling someone to play in traffic or to chase parked cars. They are the thinnest-skinned "tough" women feminism has produced. American (female) privilege at it's finest.

Hmmmm. I think someone (Franc?) mentioned the lack of a policy that forbade the nailing of your penis to the front desk?

I wonder what she would have made of that?

*ahem* Still, he was Carl Sagan, someone who had actually you know, done stuff.

Everyone slips up sometimes. As you said, he more than made up for it with the good he's done. Rebecca Choprason, not so much.
Oh please. Sagan was a pantheist - that is nowhere near total fucknut Chopraism. I do not see pantheism as spookiness. I may not agree with it, but I do not find it incompatible with reality.
