Obama hardly represents the far left (let alone what I would call the progressive left). It's only the crazies on the right who think that Obama is a socialist or marxist. The US has a tradition of left socialist parties, like the UK and the Continent, but they've never had much influence, they're miniscule in membership and typically very sectarian.bhoytony wrote:AMERICAN!!! Certainly not, I am from the UK. From my experience the far left in the US are what we would call right of centre moderates. I keep hearing idiots over there calling Obama a socialist. Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
I just got finished interacting with the Horde and I think I got at least one worthwhile answer to my question:
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... ent-421309
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... ent-421274
The rest was the usual. I had hopes for one more response, but alas it was not to be.
Ultimately though, I believe they think I was trolling, particularly as I left them with the comment from my post here about Hunter lumping them into the same category as Stormfront.
The most useful one:When someone expresses a critique of feminism, does your response include the assumption that the criticism is prompted by a hatred of women?
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... ent-421309
This one had a valid point, but was not helpful.Amphiox
4 August 2012 at 3:36 pm
If that critique of feminism has its foundational argument(s) predicated on the denial of the fundamental equal humanity of women, then it IS an argument prompted by a hatred of women, even if that prompt did not originate with the specific person making that argument, who might be making said argument in ignorance of its foundation.
No assumptions of any kind are required.

I did get one more thing "gaslighting", but they did not appear to appreciate that they use it as a meme.Rev. BigDumbChimp

no with a caveat
It depends on the criticism and how is it presented. Some people are just plain obvious. You for example.

I also like thei threshold of what constitutes justification for "banning". For it seems what gripes they have with Justin, they are trivial compared to the bullying threats displayed by Osama Greg Laden. He is not "banned" or "blocked" by those frothing at the mouth at Justin.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Thanks. It is important to note here, once again, about what seems to be Ophelia Benson's total unwillingness to address my arguments. Following one of my podcast episodes (http://nepafreethought.org/podcast/episode?p=15) in which I discussed -- among other things -- her 'threatening e-mails' she was so upset that she went on my Facebook wall to express her disapproval that was filled with name-calling and other nonsense. I extended an invitation to her to come on a future show to defend herself and she wanted nothing to do with it. She hasn't even addressed the show and the criticisms on her blog either.CommanderTuvok wrote:If there is one thing Baboon supporters really hate - it is people with credible arguments and points who are not afraid of standing up to the hectoring morons that troll Twitter on behalf of the FC5. Following that, I commented on her blog asking where these so-called "literal threats of rape and murder" are and she banned me. After this, PZ went about with name-calling on multiple occassions - again not addressing the arguments (or providing evidence for the "literal threats of rape and murder" that can supposedly be found, according to Rebecca Watson, by using Google for ten seconds).
What is preventing them, if they are so upset with me, about providing these "literal threats of rape and murder" to simply end the discussion? I have no reason to believe they exist...and I am even starting to think that 'Elevatorguy' never existed either.
Obviously, individual bloggers don't address every criticism and every person on their blog whom they disagree with, but it seems quite telling that they have failed to address me or the arguments I put forth in light of their only responses to be banning and name-calling.

My current working hypothesis is that they are emotional rather than logical.
So, in that vein, any criticism is viewed as an unjustified attack and the content of the argument is ignored, because not only is it automatically invalid, it is just a vechile to launch an attack.
In short, you are trying to make sense of, and to an intellectual cripple.

A few prominent bloggers seem to have trouble distinguishing between actual misogynists and non-misogynists whose only offense is that they disagree with these bloggers in some way. By responding to these two groups in much the same way, many of those who have not made rape jokes, threatened violence, or resorted to personal insults feel like they've been bullied.

What about harassment? based upon what I found (here) it looks like they are taking away Watson's biggest weapon:
What will she do? :violin:Critical examination of beliefs, including critical commentary on another person’s views, does not, by itself, constitute hostile conduct or harassment. One of the underlying rationales of this policy is to promote the free exchange of ideas, not to inhibit it.

Yes-- Ophelia considers the reference to immolation a twitter comment about TAM not having a self-immolation policy ( http://skepchick.org/2012/07/ask-surly- ... with-hate/)to be a death threat:

Hmmm, I would have hoped for the "threats of rape and murder" they've been rolling out for months...not something that happened within the last 30 days.
Pappa's wasn't a threat anyway.
Light yourself on fire, well...that's just a suggestion, isn't it? Seriously, it's no different than telling someone to play in traffic or to chase parked cars. They are the thinnest-skinned "tough" women feminism has produced. American (female) privilege at it's finest.

Hmmmm. I think someone (Franc?) mentioned the lack of a policy that forbade the nailing of your penis to the front desk?Guest wrote:Yes-- Ophelia considers the reference to immolation a twitter comment about TAM not having a self-immolation policy ( http://skepchick.org/2012/07/ask-surly- ... with-hate/)to be a death threat:

Oh please. Sagan was a pantheist - that is nowhere near total fucknut Chopraism. I do not see pantheism as spookiness. I may not agree with it, but I do not find it incompatible with reality.Badger3k wrote:― Carl Sagan, CosmosWe are a way for the cosmos to know itself.
*ahem* Still, he was Carl Sagan, someone who had actually you know, done stuff.
Everyone slips up sometimes. As you said, he more than made up for it with the good he's done. Rebecca Choprason, not so much.
