Michael K Gray, am I correct that you were a regular poster over at the Dawkins site (or am I confusing your name with some other poster)? I'm just wondering what's happened to the the regular posting of news, comments, etc. The feed in my Google Reader doesn't show any new posts since August.
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Here's Ophelia, 'doubling-down', as it were: http://freethoughtblogs.com/butterflies ... ote-to-al/
I'm still torn on what FfTBer I despise the most - the appalling shit-stirring, interfering, vapid, obscurantist dong-dong that is Ophelia, or the vindictive, nasty, stupid, bully-apologist bag of sick that is Zvan. Peezus isn't actually my least liked baboon, in that he can occasionally be interesting, and I do respect him for his work. Yes, he's an obscure professor at a fairly obscure university - but it's that kind of thankless donkey-work which keep the sciences - or any academic discipline - going. It's difficult work, not glamorous, but essential IMO. That said, PZ is still a massive arse.
In any case, I myself feel I've been injust in tarring the FfTB crowd with the same brush. Recent events have made it pretty clear to me that there are (or more pertinently, were) some good bloggers there. For those that remain, Aron Ra is usually excellent. And I reckon Mano might be worth checking out more closely. Hell, I don't even mind Natalie Reed that much, even if most of her stuff is tl;dr.
In any case, I'm gonna do my utmost to refrain from using 'FfTbers' in favour of 'FCers'. Most of us know who they are, anyway.
These is, at least, one thing about FTB that has proven illuminating to me: the network seriously disproves the notion of there being a God: Al left and Ophelia stays; Lennon got shot and Ringo didn't. Simples!
Uh-huh. Gotcha, O withered Plum. You had no idea that Al might have preferred to announce his departure himself. I'd personally like to refer Nanny Fee to Empathy 101 on this, given that anyone whose brain surely isn't gradually being eaten by desperately hungry cannibal amoebas would know that this kind of personal info is best left to the person involved, and that they might just feel a little offended should some meddlesome ratbag with a mouth like dog's bottom announce such details on their behalf. The quick note is just to say that I didn’t know it was a secret. I didn’t know I was letting a cat out of a bag. Part of the reason for that is that the ragey podcast with Reap Paden was already out there. Given the nature of the podcast it didn’t even occur to me that Al was keeping his departure a secret. Maybe it should have, but it didn’t. I didn’t intend to leave Al with a shitload of work on a night he’d planned to spend with his family.

How True!
Yesterday when Ophelia did her smear-job on Al using the tragedy of a young girls suicide as the entry point to a post I actually had a few comments of mine that were published. I have my suspicions that she published them as a result of something I'd written on Al's blog, but who knows? At any rate I apparently regained my 'moderated into silence' status when I suggested that the reason she didn't continue the conversation on Al's blog was not that it had been overrun by her 'harrassers' as she claimed, but rather that it wasn't an environment she could control the dialog via silencing the opposition.
Ophelia's going at it again today with another go at Al, "Note to Al" I think is the title. Anyhow, I submitted a comment that as a self-confessed drama junkie that I am, that I would like to thank her for being the drama queen that she is. It didn't stay in moderation for very long and publication wasn't it's destiny.
Yeah, it's not fair or reasonable to paint all of the FtB bloggers with the same brush, FCers is much more target specific moniker for those deserving ridicule, I think.

This is one of the reasons PUA approaches work, they go after the '9s and 10s'-- Men are often intimidated by a womans looks and intelligence, so a guy who actually has the guts to confidently approach an attractive woman and a guy who isnt intimidated by genuine intelligence are successful. Why? Cause the chick is shocked hes actually interested in her and attracted to his confidence. I cant tell you how many times my guy friends (thinking they were flattering me) would tattle on their guy friends commenting on how 'hot' I was while they were hiding in their locker room at the gym. I was always like 'Great. So they think Im 'hot'. And Im going to be sitting with Arnie watching Netflix on Saturday because they wont ask me out for coffee." I cant tell you how many times I dated someone who initially LOVED that I was an HIV researcher, and LOVED parading their 'HIV researcher girlfriend' in front of their friends. But when reality hit the fan (I spend a ton of time in the lab, I get frustrated at work and the partner has no helpful insight/advice, I am not easy to impress intellectually, they might have to make personal sacrifices to support me) suddenly an HIV researcher for a girlfriend was not so attractive.
One of the many reasons this fiasco has pissed me off is that Watson lynching the guy who asked her for coffee, Myers weird creepy 'advice' to guys wanting to date atheist women, it makes dating even *harder* for guys AND women.

At the risk of seeming smug (by virtue of posting frequency) might I say that I can feel some empathy with you?
Perhaps not balanced empathy in parallel with your specific concerns, but empathy nonetheless.
1) Glad to hear that you are peeling yourself away from superstition.
As painful as having a band-aid ripped off a scar, but as vital that it should be removed after the healing process, lest it fester.
2) Many of we here have disabilities, but choose not to employ them as bait, nor lures for sympathy, unlike the A+Theistics.
As for your daughter: what can we do to help? Or: more specifically, is there anything that I can do to assist?
My own daughter is healthy, but I have acquired visual defects, and maybe able to proffer "lulz" to add spice to y0our existence?
Something that the negative drones at A+Theism lack is a sense of humour, that's for sure.[/quote]
Hi Michael,
Thanks for the welcome and empathy, Kind Sir. I don't actually see myself as having any problems, probably as I wasn't diagnosed until my mid thirties. Also thanks for the offer of assistance regarding my daughter. It is very much appreciated. She is managing very well on the 'puter, but hates the software we were using, Supernova. She prefers doing without, and just sitting close to the screen. Probs not good for, but actually easier for her to manage as she is very easily frustrated.
Feel free to offer away regarding the lulz's, they are always appreciated. Have you seen the comedian Jason Byrne doing his special eye joke? For some reason this made me feel better about my daughter's special eye, though it is very much more special than Jason's, jittering furiously as it does. I honestly don't know how she sees so well, all things considered.
First time at youtubing stuff, finger's crossed that it works. Have to dash now, time for Jazz to watch The X Factor. She's already picked her winner out, and there'll be hell to pay if she misses it.

First, anti-white racism does not surprise me, after all, we are all humans. Second, I'm not saying that the "spidey sense" is always wrong or it's often wrong. Heck, for all I know it could be often right. But the problem with this, as all well as all the other 'sixth senses' is that it is difficult to objectively verify it. This point, the separation of what you feel from what might or is actually true, as well as being aware that your senses can easily fool you, is one of the very basic points of scepticism. It is very easy to call others on their reliance on this mental heuristic, the difficult thing is to detect it in yourself and putting a leash on it. So basically, I'm not saying that everytime you feel someone is presenting a racist point of view, you are wrong. I'm saying that you could be easily fooled by your brain while at the same time feeling extremely sure that you are right.Steve Schuler wrote:Anyhow, having lived in Hawaii as a white-boy for a couple of years I can attest to a couple of things: Yes, anti-white racism can be a significant problem (if you're white) in parts of America, and sometimes all it takes is a look to communicate utter racial contempt. "Stink-Eye" is the colloquial expression used in Hawaii for this form of non-verbal communication, which is a pretty potent hateful glare that requires no verbal conversation to be understood. So, in a sense I think that Ian is not entirely wrong about 'spidey sense', although I think that in the way he was using it allowed for folks to rationalize a rush to judgement when that might not be warranted.
Complex thing, this life that is...

Oolon (http://www.slymepit.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... 300#p19911) says:
Banning creates false consensus, and paints a false picture of what people think. It is also little more than an exercise in power and a form of extremely juvenile discipline carried out by people who are simply not adult enough, or intellectually sound enough, to carry on a legitimate dialogue.
But you, in your typical fashion, want to minimize, dismiss, and misrepresent our position as "butthurt"?
Fuck off Oolon. You're just a fucking liar and a waste of space.
Ah, there you go again, you deceitful, mendacious piece of dog's dropping. No one here is in any way whatsoever "butthurt" about being banned from FfTB or Skepchick. The point of our focus on banning is and always has been the deplorable hypocrisy and dishonesty, and the palpable reflection of Orwellian social control that is present in the act of banning. Is that why the pitters are so butthurt about being banned?

I'm banned from both Skepchick and Phawrongula (maybe a lot of FTB, I wouldn't know). Didn't bother me in the slightest, not remotely butthurt. Frankly, the way I got banned by PZ is a source of endless amusement to me. Becca... well, I can't blame her, I'd likely have banned me, too, really.

I've never been banned, nor have I posted on any of their blogs. I stay away from them and don't visit the blogs ever because I was blacklisted after being seen on the Slymepit, and I truly respect that if they think I'm a threat. I think it's the nice thing to do, to let people have their own little blogs and not feel hassled in their own "space". I was actually a pretty prolific commenter over at Skepchick, once upon a time. It didn't used to be like it is now (though, looking back, I can see now that it was headed that direction). I got banned at PZ's old place because he posted something very very stupid, and very, very close to my personal life, so I decided to go over and see if maybe I could shine a little light for someone.
