Naw, the girl has found something that sells. STUPIDITY and WHINING!

Skeptic conferences are still booking her, clearly, and you'd assume they - as SKEPTICS - would be a bit more picky about who they get on the telly.

When they attempted a tv show based around skeptics (called The Skeptologists), it was Dr Kiki chosen as the woman on the team.

Several types of prosopagnosia (developmental, associative, etc.) have been described, but "transient" is not one of them. I suppose it's formally possible that alcohol intoxication could selectively affect the fusiform gyrus, yet leave the ability to remember the elevator conversation completely intact.

But I doubt it.
Transient Prosopagnosia exists and has been medically studied.

Interesting!

The peer-reviewed references you linked indicate that transient prosopagnosia can be associated with ischemic stroke, epilepsy surgery, diving embolism, and normal pressure hydrocephalus (aka "wet, wobbly, wacky") - none of which would apply to the elevator incident. (OK maybe alcoholic wet, wobbly, wacky). "Brad" attributes the phenomenon to migraines in the yahoo link, which might work for Watson, but she didn't mention that.

The dreaded Freud is amusing on this.

Obsession with shit (coprophilia - as distinct from the Pit which has coprolalia) implies obesssive attraction to it, associated with feelings of persecution and being threatened (such as a hypothetical pudenda punt), upto and including full blown paranoia.

Every morning after tea, Ophelia Benson retires to her Command Center and settles askew on the toilet like James T. Kirk and squeezes out a greasy little floater. She then sticks a square of paper on a toothpick in it as as sail, puts on her tricorner crazy Jack Sparrow hat and declares herself Cap'n Crotch, defender of lady bits.

That is all.

Doubt it. Event organisers want media coverage and they don't give a shit about what they have to say (or even, half the time, if they show up at all). I knew a guy (ex-journo) who set up a conference on road safety (fer shit's sake) and organised Noam Chomsky to talk at it.
But what does Chomsky know about road safety?
Sweet FA, but the media won't give two hoots about that and will try to get him to say something awful about the US.
But he's a linguist?
Yeah, like that matters.

Conference goes ahead, much publicity re Chomsky, but he never actually comes. Job done.

I think it was Bowie who said that everyone's on the internet now but it's still just about who can scream the loudest if you want attention. Becky may have some work to do on that front, but now that she's formed the Friends Of Becky (PZ Myers, Pres) she at least has a posse. Yo!

Seriously, you get people to pay to hear a talk you knocked up from bits of old gibber while you were in the airport shitter (yes, Phil, SHITTER!) and you want me to applaud your heroism/adroitness/massive command of the topic/intelligence "I passed my exams and I didn't even study" undergrad pose? How little respect do you have for your listeners? Or the people who paid for your talk? How facile is the whole atheist/skeptic schmear that you can bog up a talk in x mins and have your listeners think it's vaguely profound?

Obviously no one but PZ ever had an academic job before either. Yutz.

Has anyone followed the thread about Watson's slate article over on Butterflies and Wheels.
It's really sad to see Ophelia's behavior there, both the weird obsession with shit as others have mentioned, and the vindictive comments about Dawkins and Russell Blackford.
I'm afraid I don't see any way back for her at this stage. She used to be a respected writer on skeptical religious issues, at least that seemed to be the case in her books with Baggini and Stangroom. By now, I'm afraid, she's completely thrown in her lot with Myers and the mysogyny-is-everywhere gang.
I think that she had been given a lot of time to calm down and get over the initial elevatorgate nonsense but any minor flare-up and she's back in the thick of it, insulting, threatening and doxing with the best of them.
I'll take a wild guess and suggest that her backstabbing and insulting of colleagues has finally reached a point where she's getting cut off by the more influential members of the community. Now she's left with the likes of Myers, Watson, Svan and Laden - it's no wonder she went bonkers.

Basil is the one (edible) plant I can count on for a decent harvest, even in extremely hot and dry years (like 2011 and 2012). I freeze the pesto in ice cube trays, and then have it on hand for quick meals of pasta or soup or baked fish. A medical student and his partner who live in my neighborhood will be beneficiaries of the basil surfeit this year. Homemade pesto doesn't travel well, or I'd send you some.

I'll have to leave a few basil plants for the honeybees - they love the blossoms! I've got passionflower vine, sagebrush, and rosemary flowers for them too. There's a working ranch in the middle of my neighborhood, and they keep bees, as well as mammalian and avian livestock. I hope their bees have made it to my backyard for the tasty flowers.

Very decent of you to suggest it, but you're right - pesto more than about 5 mins old starts to taste like bottled stuff. Bleurgh. I'm always impressed by anyone that can grow, um, bloody well anything really. I'm hopeless. And if one more person says "no, it's easy, you just..." I may resort to violence. Despite that we have a planting program this year to put in a mob of trees - mango, avocado, various nuts, and another attempt to try to improve the lemons (not quite the climate, but we get some). The herb garden is next. AKA Heartbreak Hill.

Did I miss the screeching over Amanda Todd? I don't recall that. I may have been busy lately, but I think I wouldn't have missed that. Why do I feel that a search would just be a waste of time....but they wouldn't be baboons if they knew how to use a search engine properly, wouldn't they?
Hello? The 1950's called. They want their McCarthyism back.

We must be the worst bullies ever then, what with our not bullying anyone.
You have to remember that this accusation appears on a blog network where telling people to kill themselves or die in some horrible way is considered normal and praiseworthy behavior (yes Brownian, Josh Spokesgay and Wowbagger, we haven't forgotten)

Maybe some of you aren't aware but here in the US there's an election approaching. This means everyone is trying very hard to stick to the narrative. In the case of liberals and democrats (and Slate magazine) their narrative is the "war on women". RW and the the scary male atheists she has to deal with fits perfectly into this narrative. SO when the election is over and all the fear mongering about a "war on women" blows over, media interest in RW will also blow over. Also, even if they get some media attention the more media attention RW and people like her get, the more of a spotlight will be placed on them. This means they'll get even more criticism directed their way. And when they start whining about being criticized, people will see for themselves what idiots these RW radfem types are. Remember that also here in the US, while there might be a lot of people who are feminists in name only (FINO) or think of feminists as simply people advocating for equality for women, the next biggest group-think notion people have of feminists are that they are either whiny cunts or butchy dikes. I don't think RW is going to help feminists get past this stereotype, nor do I think RW fits in with what most everyday FINO styled feminists think.

I guess we'll wait and see.

Heartbreak Hill is a suitable name for my 0.1 acre suburban spread as well. There is only about a centimeter of alkaline soil, before you hit rock, and so any vegetable/herb gardening has to be done in raised beds. I had good harvests of Asian cucumbers, Chinese long beans, purple dove beans, okra, kale, chard, spinach, and lettuce this year, but it's taken some experimenting with seed varieties. The fig tree and persimmon tree are doing OK, but it will be another year or two before they produce fruit.

If I had to depend on my gardening skills and backyard harvest for even a quarter of my food, I'd be screwed.

Ophelia put up a post today regarding an Aussie dictionary that redefines misogyny. This dictionary replaced the word 'hatred' with 'entrenched prejudice against women.'

She states there is no difference between 'hatred' and 'entrenched prejudice.' Example:

http://www.alstefanelli.com/benson3.jpg

Then, she goes on to say that 'some people' are trying to redefine misogyny as not being this way toward all women. Example:

http://www.alstefanelli.com/benson4.jpg

Ophelia gets the 'Misogyny is contempt, dismissal, hostility, disregard' part right, but neglects to include 'toward all women or girls.'

She states her comments are 'as far as she remembers,' but the dictionary still defines it as 'women,' which would stick with the other definitions that state it is a hatred (or entrenched prejudice) against women, in general. This would connote all women. All the dictionaries, do. So does Wikipedia. So do psychology journals. Example:

http://www.alstefanelli.com/miso4.jpg

Even the first commenter on the blog she linked to states that all misogynists are sexist, but not all sexists are misogynists. This is not a pass for sexists, but just a statement that misogyny is a very specific definition for a very specific character trait toward women.

While I know several people who are sexist, or who hate (have an entrenched prejudice) against some women, or a particular woman, this does not make them misogynists.

I just have issues when people use the wrong words. I would have no problem if she called out individuals for bad behavior, acting sexist, etc. Or even pointing out an actual misogynist, if she can find one. But for the love of the Kracken,

Oh stop. You'll make me feel sorry for her.

Which I can almost do until she starts the Crazy Ol' Lady routine again. Dammit woman, have some respect for yourself even if you can't respect anyone else. The dwindling friend supply is probably all going into confirmation bias - boo hoo, I thought X was an arsehole and now s/h/it has shat on me I know it for sure! Let's face it, none of these folks were ever going to make The Big Time, no matter how much PZ was dreaming of it when the "horsemen vacancy" came up. But there is probably enough money slopping round the US to support a D-list conference circuit, and appearing there must be so much easier when you don't ever have to come up with anything difficult, or new. Just cobble some shite together while waiting for the bar to open, the punters will lap it up whatever. (Don't even) rinse, and repeat.

I think this is a valid point, especially in light of all the truly offensive, misogynistic statements some of the far right ultra-conservative Republicans have made recently. There's also a very strong undercurrent of anti-intellectualism in the Republican Party.

The LDS (Mormon) community is not known for promoting post-secondary education or career advancement of its womenfolk. Rather they are expected to be brood mares and homemakers, and to support hubby's education and career. If Romney wins the election, I think I will have to seriously consider leaving the US.
