Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
I think Zvan's plunged to new depths (sewer level depths, you might say) of stupidity with that article. Despite bearing in mind that she's previously tried to equate change with damage, and refers to a certain threat of violence as an 'ambiguous colloquialism', I still remain surprised at the utter idiocy of this article.ReneeHendricks wrote:Holy shit snacks, Scoobie! My comment went through: http://freethoughtblogs.com/almostdiamo ... ent-135639
And here I thought she had me banned :D I stand corrected!
Still, in letting two posts through which call her on it, I'm hoping that she's doing so with a view to admitting that she's made a mistake. It's a slender hope, I admit - it's likely she let them pass moderation (presuming the post from explody was in moderation) because she's got just the right half-baked sophistry brewing to 'counter' these points.
Zvan is just a fuckin spare udder. I don't know what that means exactly, but sometimes invective just comes out of it's own accord when one of FCs gets my goat.

First of all, may we agree that being an atheist does not necessarily mean that a person is rational in any or all aspects of their life. Hopefully, those that come to the realization that there are no gods, well, they've become skeptics first, then over time, they will come to understand that many of the things they once thought were true, are not.sacha wrote:Outwest wrote:

That being said, are there sexists atheists? Probably. Are there racist atheists? I have no doubt there are. But in both of these cited, from my interactions personally and online, I believe this to be a very small percentage of the atheist community. And for people like Jen and Rebecca, and, (ugghh!) Ophelia and Stephie-poo( thanks Renee) to (i first wrote imply, but that is wrong) say that sexism is a major issue in the skeptical/atheist community is an affront to the vast majority of us that battle all of the social inequities on a daily basis.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
LMAO here. Ok, so Mandy Caruso's "ordeal" is out there for all to see. As well as the costume she wore. While there isn't a body length picture to peruse, the comic book character she portrayed gives you enough of an idea (super heroine Black Cat, for those not in the know). So, on Facebook in the Anti-Atheism+ area, a bit of a discussion has gone on about her *very public and oh-so-face-putting" tirade on how she was sexually harassed.
Now, I read the article before it was placed withing this FB area. I chalked it up to a woman who wants to be a famous fashion designer working an angle to get her name out there. And she succeeded fairly well. One Sergio Dominguez decided to go on and on comparing it to "Muslim rape" (I shit you not). So, I put out there a costume I wore about 2-3 years ago:
http://t.co/nDKQhOjD - his response???
He said that it was appropriate for a porn convention. Honestly. Now, let's take a look...

I've been to one or two porn cons (I used to work for an adult toy store and was interested) and they wear about the same and often a bit more.
Sorry. Had to share the hypocrisy and do a bit of public head shaking :D

More nominal life-long atheists than in 2000x USAs. Yet they are rarely skeptical, given the profound and endemic socialised superstition that pervades every aspect of life.

That article was awesome all by itself. Just sayin' :D As a woman who isn't a size 4 (and never will be unless I get cancer or develop some eating disorder), that bit made me laugh my ass off! Yes, I fluctuate from a size 10 to a size 12. I'm 5'6", medium build, have hips that were just fucking built to have children and a rather large chest thanks to years of swimming and a broad back. I *love* women who aren't toothpicks and who love the way they are. The caveat is if you get to an *unhealthy* weight then I'm not so on board. I think, for some people, atheism is the one minority identity they have. They’re not gay, they’re not black, they live in the United States, and a lot of them are middle-class or higher. Being an “atheist†is the one thing that they take on as their cause, and they think it’s the most important because it’s the only one that affects them. It puts their priorities out of order a little bit. Once you’ve figured out God doesn’t exist, that’s great! But there are other irrational things you might believe in, like sexism.
Bless her little ole heart, but she isn't a deep thinker, is she? She starts out well enough, but goes off the rails when she says that when people take on godlessness as their cause, it puts their priorities out of order. It may puts people's priorities out of order relative to hers, but she incorrectly assumes that everyone must conform their priority to what she thinks is important.
But, the poor dear just can't stop there. After she incorrectly assumes a Jen-centric solar system, she makes the leap from "people don't share my priorities" to "people who don't share my priorities oppose them."

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
For somelike like Ophelia with a background in philosophy (correct me if I am wrong), I am disapppointed to see Ophelia not understand distinctions between 'entrenched prejudice' and 'hatred.' It is really nothing new, though, as they conflate so many terms and assign motives to people on the internet with no good reason to do so (watson is especially a frequent offender).
http://freethoughtblogs.com/butterflies ... -misogyny/
Responses and criticism are 'stalking' and 'cyberstalking.' Disagreement is 'sexism' and 'misogyny.' Expressing skepticism is translated to 'invalidating experience,' 'gaslighting,' and 'insisting women are liars.' Trolling is 'abuse.' 'I hope you x' is a 'threat.' Over-the-top emails sent to Ophelia concerning TAM are 'threats.' Disagreement is 'not caring about women.' Asking for clarification is 'jaqing off' and 'trolling.'

Maybe I should take the 'gameplan' from Watson and company and start claiming that they are misandists and Watson is an "anti-man leader." I can then write an article for Slate about misandry in the skeptical community and hijack my speeches and panel appearances talking about how women have engaged in a campaign of hate against me and others as they have 'declared war.' No, I agree, it's trivializing rape. Unwanted pregnancies are a lot of things, but "like rape" is not on that list, ( unless of course, it is caused BY rape. In that kind of case, and only that kind of case, I could agree)ReneeHendricks wrote:Ok, I can't stand it. No. No, it's not. It is not a violent sexual assault upon your body and mental well-being. It's simply unwanted. To me, it's like night and day. Or perhaps I'm just letting my extreme distaste of Szvan color my perception. Either way, that line just bothers the shit out of me.An unwanted pregnancy is not rape, but it is like a rape in many ways.

Ok...that wasn't the same person. Sigh. I'm done linking. Clearly I'm having issues tonight.
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
Hehe! They were both written by some strange person named 'Skeptic Ink'.
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
WRT the "face blindness" excuse for not recognizing Elevator Guy - I think it's important to reiterate that Watson claimed to have transient prosopagnosia. Several types of prosopagnosia (developmental, associative, etc.) have been described, but "transient" is not one of them. I suppose it's formally possible that alcohol intoxication could selectively affect the fusiform gyrus, yet leave the ability to remember the elevator conversation completely intact.
But I doubt it.
But I doubt it.

My bold. It's nothing like what she wrote. And certainly not what she meant. Examine her history and you will see clearly: she believes that an unwanted pregnancy arising from not-non-consensual sex, is very much like rape. No matter that the woman was a willing participant in the shenanigans that led to the awful, unbearable horror of growing a tiny person in her tummy; all sex is rape when you're crazy as a cunt, like Stephany.Guest wrote:For the sake of objectivity I'll be the devil's advocate here. I think hers is a case of bad 'mind-keyboard interfacing':Looking at her train of thought to me it seems she was talking about forced continuation of pregnancy from rape, even though that's not exactly what she wrote.Stephanie Zvan wrote: An unwanted pregnancy is not rape, but it is like a rape in many ways. God, I just thought some more about what Stephany said, and it really made me angry. What a vicious cunt she is. Bleurgh.

Argh! I was thrown off by different article names. Really...after a certain time at night, I just need to step away from the linking.Notung wrote:Hehe! They were both written by some strange person named 'Skeptic Ink'.

I think it's probably a lesser-known version, Convenient Prosopagnosia. Or possibly Prosopagnosia by Proxy.BarnOwl wrote:WRT the "face blindness" excuse for not recognizing Elevator Guy - I think it's important to reiterate that Watson claimed to have transient prosopagnosia. Or perhaps she didn't remember the face 'cause he was actually taking her up the council...
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
If I understand this correctly .... trying to parse out this postulated sex (or turkey baster) leading to preggers-is-a-form-of-rape and thus presumeably when she willingly participitated in the sex (or turkey basting), leading to this form of rape she was indulging in some sort of self-abuse and/or raping herself?ConcentratedH2O, OM wrote:My bold. Oh never mind this is too convoluted for me to follow at this point in time.. ... look someone send the woman a vibrator OK?
There. Problem solved. All she has to worry about now is growing hair on her palm (or is that a myth also? Or is it something only men get from masturbation? Or do women have to worry about this at all?)
Whatever. I think I need a stiff drink now.

Becky Whatnot is on a Skeptic's roadtrip with the respected documentariatist Jon Ronson. I fear she is gaining traction in the mainstream. She obviously sees it the same way, as she is really hitting the "science" thing hard in her recent public pronouncements.
Her latest post, which I think is an attempt at a hilarious parody of Newsweek's article on near-death experiences, is a good example.
It begins, almost (2nd sentence):
The last paragraph has the sentence:
Anyway, it's not funny, but it does show that she is preparing to inveigle her way into some nice paying jobs in the media. A page search for "scie*" gives 8 hits. Be warned, she is overstating her credentials to credulous media people, and she is doing it very well. Expect to see her continue to rise, and to see a lot more of her, including on your tellyvis screens. You heard it here...first?

Which pushes me to ask "so why did you do a marketing degree instead of a hard science one?".I’ve long been interested in science and critical thinking.

Which pushes me to ask "so why can you never provide evidence for the accusations you spew?".I’ve spent years as a skeptic and a believer in science

Sweet! Lots of paying gigs for the regulars here to prove what a lying, duplicitous, incompetent, self-centered, vacuous cunt she is.ConcentratedH2O, OM wrote:

Oh, wait, she'll be a cash cow for credulous MSM producers, right? Well, forget it then.
We can still laugh at her...

Did I miss the screeching over Amanda Todd? I don't recall that. I may have been busy lately, but I think I wouldn't have missed that. Why do I feel that a search would just be a waste of time....but they wouldn't be baboons if they knew how to use a search engine properly, wouldn't they?Jan Steen wrote:

I repeated her quote to my partner, and she was as WTF as I was. This is after all the shit stirred by the repubs here - the latest by that murdoch prick - that rape is part of "god's plan"...blargh! They do share the same "trivializing rape" bit, just from opposite ends.welch wrote:No, I agree, it's trivializing rape. Unwanted pregnancies are a lot of things, but "like rape" is not on that list, ( unless of course, it is caused BY rape. In that kind of case, and only that kind of case, I could agree)ReneeHendricks wrote:Ok, I can't stand it. I was just going to leave this alone because I have the feeling that not many will agree with me. But Asshat-Szvan's latest bit has a line in it (actually, twice but stated differently) that is bothering the shit out of me:

Have you ever noticed most of the posters over at Skepchick are men. White men, as well. The horror!!!
Does this mean Rebecca Watson is a racist? Oh, wait a second, I've just suffered a bout of Baboonitis.

As if we don't have enough loonies on the tube already. Maybe they can put her and Deepak on the same show - we can get BS from both ends of the spectrum. Although there is a possible good angle to that - she might end up leaving the podcasting business and become one of the vacuous talking heads that are ignored by saner people. Or else she'll get on some national stage, get hammered by real skeptics, and end up a blubbering mess. However, I can see her getting her own reality show. After all, if Jersey Shore and Honey Boo-Boo can make it, skepticisms Paris Hilton can't do worse.ConcentratedH2O, OM wrote:

Fair play to the woman, her belief in "sexism" is irrational.Outwest wrote:The bolding in the middle of the answer is mine. So, if all you are is an atheist, your priorities are out of order? Note also how we're all apparently white, midlle-class or above. Is this woman that dimwitted? Is it fair to say that, on the whole, atheists aren’t that crazy about feminism?
I think, for some people, atheism is the one minority identity they have. They’re not gay, they’re not black, they live in the United States, and a lot of them are middle-class or higher. Being an “atheist†is the one thing that they take on as their cause, and they think it’s the most important because it’s the only one that affects them. It puts their priorities out of order a little bit. Once you’ve figured out God doesn’t exist, that’s great! But there are other irrational things you might believe in, like sexism.
