Re: Nerds. Nerds EVERYWHERE...

I might be branching in to SJW territory but I often think that some anti evolutionists real problem is not that we evolved from primates but that we did so first in Africa.Researchers in Ethiopia on Wednesday announced their discovery of fossils from a previously unknown member of the early human family, one that likely vied for survival in the same place and time as the iconic “Lucy†and her kin between 3.3 million and 3.5 million years ago.
Although the creature shares traits with other kinds of early humans, the researchers believe the thickly enameled teeth and fragmented jaw bones they found are evidence of an entirely separate species of hominin—the group that includes modern humans and our extinct predecessors. They’ve formally named the new species Australopithecus deyiremeda, which means “close relative†in the local language of the Afar region where they found it.
If confirmed by additional fossils, the discovery complicates what researchers long considered the only straightforward period of human evolution, stoking disputes over human origins. They reported their find in Nature.

No. The Vikings started their raiding in the 800s. They settle Normandy, parts of Russia, etc. Then, as Normans, they hopped on some ships with this dude named Richard and headed on over to Jolly Old England where they took on Harold II at Hastings in 1066.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_expansionThe Viking presence in Normandy began with the raids deep into the territory of the Frankish Empire, from the middle of 9th century. Viking raids extended deep into the Frankish territory, and included the sacking of many prominent towns such as Rouen, Paris and the abbey at Jumieges. The inability of the Frankish king Charles the Bald, and later Charles the Simple, to prevent these Viking incursions forced them to offer vast payments of silver and gold to prevent any further pillage. These pay-offs were short lived of course, and the Danish raiders would always return for more.
The Duchy of Normandy was created for the Viking leader Rollo after he had besieged Paris. In 911, Rollo entered vassalage to the king of the West Franks Charles the Simple through the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. This treaty made of Rollo the first Norman count of Rouen. In addition, Rollo was to be baptized and marry Gisele, the illegitimate daughter of Charles. In exchange for his homage and fealty, Rollo legally gained the territory which he and his Viking allies had previously conquered.
The Norman conquest of England was the 11th-century invasion and occupation of England by an army of Norman, Breton, and French soldiers led by Duke William II of Normandy, later William the Conqueror.
That's how we got the stupid coat of arms. And we were, like I said, a bunch of right bastards. :)William's claim to the English throne derived from his familial relationship with the (childless) Anglo-Saxon King Edward the Confessor, who may have encouraged William's hopes for the throne. Edward died in January 1066 and was succeeded by his brother-in-law Harold Godwinson. The Norwegian king Harald Hardrada invaded northern England in September 1066, was victorious at the Battle of Fulford, but Harold defeated and killed him at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September 1066. Within days, William landed in southern England. Harold marched south to confront him, leaving a significant portion of his army in the north. Harold's army confronted William's invaders on 14 October at the Battle of Hastings; William's force defeated Harold, who was killed in the engagement.
Although William's main rivals were gone, he still faced rebellions over the following years and was not secure on his throne until after 1072. The lands of the resisting English elite were confiscated; some of the elite fled into exile. To control his new kingdom, William gave lands to his followers and built castles commanding military strongpoints throughout the land. Other effects of the conquest included the court and government, the introduction of Norman French as the language of the elites, and changes in the composition of the upper classes, as William enfeoffed lands to be held directly from the king. More gradual changes affected the agricultural classes and village life: the main change appears to have been the formal elimination of slavery, which may or may not have been linked to the invasion. There was little alteration in the structure of government, as the new Norman administrators took over many of the forms of Anglo-Saxon government.

So I'm happy with life. But though I'm often at peace with it, right now, and quite occasionally, I'm not happy with not-life. It becomes something unacceptable. In my analytical approach, this always works out as irrational. So that should be okay, rationally speaking. But I can't override it being not.
How do you guys approach - and not just at your best, but in general - the fear of death? Paraphrasing Epictetus (I think something like - when I live, death is not, and when death is, I am not) is rationally satisfactory to me, but it does not much quell the sense of total doom.

What I mean here, is even if you have solved your approach/peace/sanity with dying to a satisfying extent, how do you go through/deal with the experience of the foreknowledge of death in ways that might lie outside that extent.Charles MacGruder wrote:

Watch this movie. The Hit. Excellent commentary on death.
Everyone is scared of death. Those who say they're not are lying. Oh sure, they may have found a way of reasoning themselves into acceptance a la Hitchens and his line about how he won't even know he's dead. Or you have the religious, who delude themselves into believing they'll never die and death isn't really death.
But they're all afraid. When they're in the hospital, dying, and they know they'll die, they're afraid. They don't want to be alone. They don't want to die. Nobody does.
Your fear of death is as natural as a desire to mate. It's part of being an animal and proof that we are still animals.

So to answer the question: I don't deal with my fear of death. I rationally believe that it probably won't be so bad when I go. No Hell or any of that bullshit. I don't feel I suffered because I didn't exist prior to my birth.
But on the animal level, I'm afraid of death. My way of dealing with it has been to try to understand that fear, rather than address it with delusions or rationalizations.
The Seventh Seal is another excellent film on death.

How do you guys approach - and not just at your best, but in general - the fear of death? Paraphrasing Epictetus (I think something like - when I live, death is not, and when death is, I am not) is rationally satisfactory to me, but it does not much quell the sense of total doom.
