So, I looked (barf) at Oo[heshallnotbenamed]on's web site post as of today and he states:
Do we take his word or assume he's a lying asshole?I’m not trolling any more

Historical reasons - but silly that it's still the case. Especially since your average Brit in the street is less religious that your average American in the street, and the Americans (as a whole) wouldn't tolerate such a thing.Darren wrote:You forgot the sammiches.

I'm actually coming to the conclusion that he's a bit unhinged. Could possibly be the Slymepit's very own, sui generis version of Dennis Markuze. It's quite flattering, really. I'm sure he'll be back, no doubt claiming how he epically trolled us by again pretending to flounce.
Might have to ignore him next time, though. Mentals give me the creeps.

Nah. You're just a guy with no real hobbies or people to deal with other than online. You invest a lot of time in whatever you consider important online, and based on the number of sites you post at, it's not a small amount of time. You talk about a wife, but I wonder sometimes about that, because you seem to be really quick to reply. I do this in spurts because I have other shit going on, so I come in, reply to a bunch of crap en masse, and dump out. If I'm waiting for stuff to happen, then I'll dawdle a bit more. But dude, you're literally on EVERY site I happen to see talking about A+ and FTB. All of them. Seriously, troll face gone, Tony I'm glad there are no hard feelings. I am surely a cunt... A sanctimonious one at that.
That's a lot of time man. A lot of personal investment, and clearly, you feel a close connection to some of them, especially laden. Your flash of anger about our treatment of his book showed. that.

They sit in the House of Lords, which is a sort of oversight talking shop. Actual policy is made by the Lower House with elected MPs. They are still party political, but less so than the Lower House. It's not ideal, but does circumvent some of the pointless bickering associated with elected officials.Darren wrote:

Having an unwritten constitution you have to be very wary when fiddling with what works - at least he bits which have been shown to work.
Im sure there could be reasonable ways to allow female CofE representation if they chose, but it seems the house is doomed to becoming an entirely elected house anyways - I think thats a shame

Anyway. Quoth Gilad Sharon
I have no particular sympathy with Hamas. My contempt for Islamists and Zionists is about on a par. However, the history of the region since 1947 suggests to me that the Palestinian people are getting a shittier deal than the Israeli people by quite a large margin. There isn't going to be any Two-State Solution because no-one capable of being elected to government in Israel is willing to do what is necessary to give the Palestinians a viable state.
Clear all the illegal settlements in the West Bank? Give the Palestinians an equal (per capita) share of the region's water? No blockades or other collective punishment? It's never going to happen.
So, what to do? More of the same? More airstrikes? A ground assault? A tighter blockade? Starve them into submission? If there can be no Palestinian state and going on as things are is unacceptable, why not take Gilad's proposal to it's logical conclusion? No Palestinians, no problem.
Hey, maybe the Israeli's could give the empty space to simpleflower and s/h/it's pals providing they run the Vernichtungslager for them?

Fuck it Gilad, do you know what those F-16 strikes cost? Learn the lessons of history. Build a few gas chambers and crematoria and you could process the entire population of the Gaza strip in about a year, probably less.We need to flatten entire neighborhoods in Gaza. Flatten all of Gaza. The Americans didn’t stop with Hiroshima – the Japanese weren’t surrendering fast enough, so they hit Nagasaki, too.
There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they’d really call for a ceasefire.

The Hamas charter - The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement, 18 August 1988
Preamble:
Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it" (The Martyr, Imam Hassan al-Banna, of blessed memory).
[...]
This Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS), clarifies its picture, reveals its identity, outlines its stand, explains its aims, speaks about its hopes, and calls for its support, adoption and joining its ranks. Our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious. It needs all sincere efforts. It is a step that inevitably should be followed by other steps. The Movement is but one squadron that should be supported by more and more squadrons from this vast Arab and Islamic world, until the enemy is vanquished and Allah's victory is realised.
Article Seven:
Moreover, if the links have been distant from each other and if obstacles, placed by those who are the lackeys of Zionism in the way of the fighters obstructed the continuation of the struggle, the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah's promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:
"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).
* - Other translations specifically state mujahadeen.Article Twenty-Eight:
The Zionist invasion is a vicious invasion. It does not refrain from resorting to all methods, using all evil and contemptible ways to achieve its end. It relies greatly in its infiltration and espionage operations on the secret organizations it gave rise to, such as the Freemasons, The Rotary and Lions clubs, and other sabotage groups. All these organizations, whether secret or open, work in the interest of Zionism and according to its instructions. They aim at undermining societies, destroying values, corrupting consciences, deteriorating character and annihilating Islam. It is behind the drug trade and alcoholism in all its kinds so as to facilitate its control and expansion.
Arab countries surrounding Israel are asked to open their borders before the fighters* from among the Arab and Islamic nations so that they could consolidate their efforts with those of their Moslem brethren in Palestine.
As for the other Arab and Islamic countries, they are asked to facilitate the movement of the fighters from and to it, and this is the least thing they could do.
We should not forget to remind every Moslem that when the Jews conquered the Holy City in 1967, they stood on the threshold of the Aqsa Mosque and proclaimed that "Mohammed is dead, and his descendants are all women."
Israel, Judaism and Jews challenge Islam and the Moslem people. "May the cowards never sleep."
Then there's article 20 which equates Jews to Nazis. I'll let you look that one up for yourself.
This is what pisses me off the most about all of this. That supposedly intelligent people can just parrot tripe that Hamas is unfairly maligned without bothering to investigate any background whatsoever. For fucks sake, yes I do expect more from you.

You're right, I was too generous. Hamas has more than a shaky reputation and then some, but cannot still be classified as genocidal. Crazy, sure, I'll give them that. The Hamas charter of '88 is a whopper and contains much lunacy, but most likely due to the fact it was co-written by the Muslim Brotherhood. However, since 2006 (when Hamas won the Palestinian legislative election), Hamas has not used the charter (or Hamas Covenant as it's called) and has made moves to give it a wide berth. Whether they've done this as an act of genuine regret, though, or simply to use a ploy to further their agenda is up for scepticism.franc wrote:This is what pisses me off the most about all of this. However, if Hamas has gained access to actual missiles (courtesy of Iran) and not just homemade rockets which only serves as glorified paperweights with uncertain trajectory (so bad some of them even missed the mark completely and actually landed in Gaza territory, which cost the life of a four-year old boy), then we're about to see some serious shit. And by serious shit, I mean mass murder, from both sides. The amount of bloodshed would be tremendous, so I hope whoever gets sent out to talk some sense into these people brings his (or her) fucking A-game.

Not quite sure what you’re referring there to about Townsend; all (?) I see in Wikipedia that might be relevent is that Townsend “had used a credit card to register with a website advertising child pornography†but that he had claimed that was only for “research purposesâ€. And not quite sure what Oolon is supposed to have done IRC or on Twitter that might be considered equivalent.Tigzy wrote:If he does end up getting charged, it won't be for being disingenuous, old boy. As Pete Townsend found out very much to his cost, it's the sort thing where intent really isn't magic...Steersman wrote: Maybe – and apparently or presumably – he did a screen-cap for the same reason many people here do the same thing: to gather evidence to make a claim or a case. Although he might be charged with being disingenuous...
But I was referring to his supposed “crimes†here that at least before did not seem that particularly odious. Although even for me the other shoe has dropped as his further comments don’t leave much “wiggle room†relative to the charge of trolling – little to support the argument that he’s not arguing in bad faith.
Which is somewhat unfortunate as I think he made or at least suggested some reasonable points about the nature of privilege in that AtheismPlus thread, “hard to insult a white personâ€. As the OP suggested, “ghost manâ€, “crackerâ€, “honkyâ€, even “fish belly†don’t have the same impact as “nigger†or “faggot†or “cuntâ€, largely – or at least presumably or hypothetically – because whites or white males are frequently or generally at the top of the food chain or with the most privilege.
Interesting phenomenon how the size and power of the group one is a member of tends to influence, for good or ill, the power or autonomy of the individual. Identity and identity politics seems to be a tricky and complicated process – one might argue or suggest that individuality is somewhat of a luxury afforded by the power and privilege of being a member of a powerful group; those not possessing such have to rely more on identification with the group itself that they are members of so that an insult to one is an insult to all.

Pitchguest, you are looking at the current capability of Hamas, probably underestimating it, without acknowledging the whole picture. Whoever is historically right, and that's a minefield, the conflict has been going on for a long time and the Israelis have learnt one thing. That is that concession results in bloodshed. The Palestinians have been firing rockets, planting bombs on buses, suicide bombing supermarkets, firing mortars, sniping and all manner of shit for a long time. I know people who have been on the receiving end of Palestinian rockets and I have a new-found respect for paperweights. Apparently they can eviscerate people. It is true that the majority of their current artillery is unsophisticated, but that is ONLY because the Israelis have been very aggressive in eliminating their weapons. The Israelis keep asking the Palestinian Authority to stop the attacks and they never do. What else can they do but eliminate the perpetrators themselves, and there is no neat way of doing that. You just can't sit back and watch your citizens blown to pieces, which is what happens when they back off, because it would be unfair to retaliate.

What this debate over Israeli retaliation reminds me of is the public outrage when police respond aggressively to angry mobs throwing rocks, iron railings and petrol bombs. Those things kill and the cops have every right to respond with extreme force. Do you think poor plod on the front line gives a shit about power imbalances when doused in burning petrol?

The "glorified paperweight" bit would seem to imply that Qassam rockets are simply kinetic devices with no active warhead.
Qassam rockets consist of a steel cylinder with some fins, base plate, and nozzle(s) attached with spot welds. The propellant is a mixture of sugar and potassium nitrate. They do not spin so they are extremely inaccurate. (Although this may actually make then more difficult to shoot down.) They do, however, contain a warhead, which consists of either TNT or urea nitrate. There are various models with various different sizes of warheads, but the minimum seems to be about a pound of explosive. Some sources say the warheads contain shrapnel while others don't mention it. The warhead is fused with some sort of contraption made from a cartridge. Since some photos show the rockets being recovered intact I suspect the fusing isn't terribly reliable. (TNT may well go off from impact alone but urea nitrate is unlikely do so.)
And regarding the danger presented to people in Gaza, yes, there's a risk of the things coming back down there, but according to Wikipedia there have been 50+ people injured when explosive supplies for these things exploded and in another instance one child was killed and five people wounded when they objected to the launcher being set up near their home.
And FWIW, my prediction is that how this goes is going to depend on whether or not some sort of truce can be brokered before a rocket (the type is irrelevant) makes it past Iron Dome and lands in a populated part of Tel Aviv. If that happens I think a very nasty ground invasion is nearly inevitable and a lot of people are going to end up dead.

The problem with the middle east is each side has God on their side.

They have not got "less crazy". They have gotten better at PR now that they are supposed to be politically "legitimate".Pitchguest wrote:You're right, I was too generous. That supposedly intelligent people can just parrot tripe that Hamas is unfairly maligned without bothering to investigate any background whatsoever. For fucks sake, yes I do expect more from you.

My sights was more along the lines of HTC OneX, which has gotten fairly positive reviews. Don't suppose you've got a review of that one coming up?Al Stefanelli wrote:Holy fuck, I take a half a day off and the place goes all Ooolony...
For any techheads that are interested, I am working on an uboxing video, along with a geeky, nerdy review of the new HTC 8X Windows Phone. Should have it up in a day or two.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Pretty much it. Imagine your next door neighbour randomly throwing bricks over the fence without caring where they land. One of the bricks eventually kills your dog. That neighbour is Hamas.ThreeFlangedJavis wrote:What this debate over Israeli retaliation reminds me of is the public outrage when police respond aggressively to angry mobs throwing rocks, iron railings and petrol bombs. Those things kill and the cops have every right to respond with extreme force. Do you think poor plod on the front line gives a shit about power imbalances when doused in burning petrol?

Next we read about oolon...He holds up a bank, shoots 3 people, has sex with one of those free toasters they give away for opening an account, mistakes the dye cylinder for a dildo and sticks it up his ass, steals an off-duty cops car as his get-away vehicle which he loses control of, plows thru a crowd of school children and runs over a homeless guy's dog. When they arrest him he starts laughing and says " You stupid fucking cops, I was just testing the bank's security! It sucks and I proved it! You bunch of idiots fell for it, fuck are you dumb! Suckers, now take these cuffs off and start planning a parade in my honor!"

So I just tried to post a link to my blog about how I have a Nexus 4 and its pretty and I dunno what to do with it.Pitchguest wrote:My sights was more along the lines of HTC OneX, which has gotten fairly positive reviews. And I got this:
WTF?The domain scienceblogs.com you have posted has been blocked because it is blacklisted. For details please see http://spameatingmonkey.com/lookup.html ... eblogs.com.
An entry on the blacklist may have several reasons:
1. You are a well-known spammer.
2. Last time a well-known spammer was using the dynamic IP address which you got from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), your e-mail address or the username you have choosen.
3. Your ISP is well-known for a lot of spamming customers and is not fighting against spammers enough.

Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
I use some real-time block lists to prevent spammers posting, and today I changed the settings to check posts from registered users as well. It works, and this is a genuine warning that scienceblogs.com is hosting a spammer somewhere.ERV wrote:\

I know it works because I was blocked from posting from my work address: the block lists reported that the external gateway my company uses was making outbound calls to several botnet command-and-control hosts. I immediately cut a ticket to our intrusion detection team, and sure enough, we found 12 malware-infected hosts.
Now, I can turn this off for registered users, but I'm a bit loath to do so, since it was very helpful for our security team in identifying the infected machines. You might want to reach out to the admins at NatGeo to let them know that scienceblogs.com is sending out spam,
Re: Periodic Table of Swearing
I've had this shit before too. It is over enthusiastic. You need to delist yourself via the removal links, or make a global request -ERV wrote:So I just tried to post a link to my blog about how I have a Nexus 4 and its pretty and I dunno what to do with it.

Has anyone else seen this?
Actually, if you want, Abbie, I can turn off link checking (as opposed to checking the IP being posted from), but again, that means that some real warnings like this will be missed.

I've turned this off, so you shouldn't see any more warnings of this sort.Lsuoma wrote:Has anyone else seen this?
