Re: You is all a bunch of poofs!
No one should be ashamed of liking Kipling. Be it "If..." or "The White Man's Burden", though I prefer the message of Dane-geld. If you want to be gelded, go ahead. Etymology wins.
But back to the original request. I've spent a couple of decades traveling with the Oxford Book of English Verse (the Gardner edition rather than Rumpole's favourite, Quiller-Couch), just because I believed the view of several single-handed mariners that a volume of poetry would entertain for longer than any novel. Having done that, I have so many poems to offer, so I'll start with "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell. The very first line was distorted by Heinlein In 'Time Enough for Love'. Here's the whole thing:
Had we but world enough and time,
This coyness, lady, were no crime.
We would sit down, and think which way
To walk, and pass our long love’s day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges’ side
Shouldst rubies find; I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the flood,
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires and more slow;
An hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.
But at my back I always hear
Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found;
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song; then worms shall try
That long-preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust;
The grave’s a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.
Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may,
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapped power.
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Through the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

Those thoughts survive, as they ought. I have more if wanted. Possibly none to do with reasons to abandon virginity, but there you go.Marvell wrote:"Vaster than empires and more slow"

"Dog," by Lawrence Ferlinghetti
The dog trots freely in the street
and sees reality
and the things he sees
are bigger than himself
and the things he sees
are his reality
Drunks in doorways
Moons on trees
The dog trots freely thru the street
and the things he sees
are smaller than himself
Fish on newsprint
Ants in holes
Chickens in Chinatown windows
their heads a block away
The dog trots freely in the street
and the things he smells
smell something like himself
The dog trots freely in the street
past puddles and babies
cats and cigars
poolrooms and policemen
He doesn't hate cops
He merely has no use for them
and he goes past them
and past the dead cows hung up whole
in front of the San Francisco Meat Market
He would rather eat a tender cow
than a tough policeman
though either might do
And he goes past the Romeo Ravioli Factory
and past Coit's Tower
and past Congressman Doyle of the Unamerican Committee
He's afraid of Coit's Tower
but he's not afraid of Congressman Doyle
although what he hears is very discouraging
very depressing
very absurd
to a sad young dog like himself
to a serious dog like himself
But he has his own free world to live in
His own fleas to eat
He will not be muzzled
Congressman Doyle is just another
fire hydrant
to him
The dog trots freely in the street
and has his own dog's life to live
and to think about
and to reflect upon
touching and tasting and testing everything
investigating everything
without benefit of perjury
a real realist
with a real tale to tell
and a real tail to tell it with
a real live
barking
democratic dog
engaged in real
free enterprise
with something to say
about ontology
something to say
about reality
and how to see it
and how to hear it
with his head cocked sideways
at streetcorners
as if he is just about to have
his picture taken
for Victor Records
listening for
His Master's Voice
and looking
like a living questionmark
into the
great gramophone
of puzzling existence
with its wondrous hollow horn
which always seems
just about to spout forth
some Victorious answer
to everything
Re: You is all a bunch of poofs!
There is a school of thought that says that poetry needs to be read out loud to be fully appreciated...
'The Mad Gardner's Song' or 'This Be The Verse' or 'The Hunting of the Snark' or even something by Robbie Burns (if Scotch doggerel qualifies) - are the sorts of things that float into view when I put the same question to myself.
Walt Whitman has probably seeped into the general conciousness too - though I don't recall reading anything of his directly. Or Beowulf or the Eddas or anything by Brendan Behan either.
In any case it was nice to hear things I didn't expect to hear....
nb I have no particular adversity to Kipling...I just haven't done much of it.

When I was courting the now-Mrs L I recorded a few love poems to her on CDs (it was a long-distance relationship - 5000 miles, and we only met three times before getting engaged), and this is one of those I put on the CD. Made here hotter 'n a two-dollar pistol, and when we met the next time she jumped my bones like Tessa Sanderson!MarcusAu wrote: ↑ There is a school of thought that says that poetry needs to be read out loud to be fully appreciated...

Re: You is all a bunch of poofs!
Gifts, by James Thomson is a slightly trite bit of Victorian tat, but I like it nonetheless. One verse was hung up as a pokerwork plaque in my old pipemaker's shop (G.W.Sim of Junction Rd, Tufnell Park) and you can guess which.
GIVE a man a horse he can ride,
Give a man a boat he can sail;
And his rank and wealth, his strength and health,
On sea nor shore shall fail.
Give a man a pipe he can smoke,
Give a man a book he can read:
And his home is bright with a calm delight,
Though the room be poor indeed.
Give a man a girl he can love,
As I, O my love, love thee;
And his heart is great with the pulse of Fate,
At home, on land, on sea.
GIVE a man a horse he can ride,
Give a man a boat he can sail;
And his rank and wealth, his strength and health,
On sea nor shore shall fail.
Give a man a pipe he can smoke,
Give a man a book he can read:
And his home is bright with a calm delight,
Though the room be poor indeed.
Give a man a girl he can love,
As I, O my love, love thee;
And his heart is great with the pulse of Fate,
At home, on land, on sea.

Re: You is all a bunch of poofs!
Since you're a good keen man:
The End
At the end
I have to move my sight up or down.
The path stops here.
Up is heaven, down is ocean
or, more simply, sky and sea rivalling
in welcome, crying Fly (or Drown) in me.
I have always found it hard to resist an invitation
especially when I have come to a dead end
a
dead
end.
The trees that grow along cliff-faces,
having suffered much from weather, put out thorns
taste of salt
ignore leaf-perm and polish:
hags under matted white hair
parcels of salt with the string tangled;
underneath
thumping the earth with their rebellious root-foot
trying to knock up
peace
out of her deep sleep.
I suppose, here, at the end, if I put out a path upon the air
I could walk on it, continue my life;
a plastic carpet, tight-rope style
but I've nothing beyond the end to hitch it to,
I can't see into the mist around the ocean;
I shall have to change to a bird or a fish.
I can't camp here at the end.
I wouldn't survive
unless returning to a mythical time
I became a tree
toothless with my eyes full of salt spray;
rooted, protesting on the edge of this cliff
- Let me stay!

Poets by Janet Frame
If poets die young
they bequeath two thirds of their life to the critics
to graze and grow fat in
visionary grass.
If poets die in old age
they live their own lives
they write their own poems
they are their own might-have-been.
Young dead poets are prized comets.
The critics queue with their empty wagons ready for hitching.
Old living poets
stay faithfully camouflaged in their own sky.
It may even be forgotten they have been shining for so long.
The reminder comes upon their falling
extinguished into the earth.
The sky is empty, the sun and moon have gone away,
there are not enough street bulbs, glow-worms, fireflies to give light
and for a time it seems there will be no more stars.

And her point seems to be that there should be social consequences for being accused of rape. Not for being a rapist, just for being accused. The podcast guy seemed to allow her to equate being accused of rape with being a rapist. I think that people like her want a way to silence people, and if they can get everyone to agree that being accused of rape makes someone a pariah then they will have their weapon.katamari Damassi wrote: ↑She does women no favors by being hyper-emotional, and demanding that emotions trump due process and evidence. In spite of her protestations to the contrary, I don't think she draws much of a distinction between "accused rapist" and "rapist." She even pulled that "credibly accused" shit. Was she willing to list any accused skeptics whom she thought innocent? No. (If only someone could ask her about the accusation against Peezus.)Driftless wrote: ↑And her point seems to be that there should be social consequences for being accused of rape. SMH economics writer succinctly documents what I have been complaining about for the past year or so.
https://www.smh.com.au/business/the-eco ... 53e5e.html
https://www.smh.com.au/business/the-eco ... 53e5e.html
In 2000, the Australian Bureau of Statistics projected that our population wouldn’t reach 25.4 million until 2051. We got there this year. Our population is growing much faster than other developed countries’ are.
The growth in our economy has been so weak over the past year that they’ve had to stop saying it, but for years our politicians boasted about how much faster our economy was growing than the other economies.
What they invariably failed to mention was that most of our faster growth was explained by our faster-growing population, not our increasing prosperity. Over the year to June, for instance, real gross domestic product grew by (a pathetic) 1.4 per cent, whereas GDP per person actually fell by 0.2 per cent.
That’s telling us that, despite the growth in the economy, on average our material standard of living is stagnant. All that immigration isn’t making the rest of us any better off in monetary terms.

PZ's high school level celebration victory dance notwithstanding, an unequivocal victory would mean all legal bills paid by the other party, which doesn't happen under this deal. Basically this means both sides want out and don't wanna fight no more. Despite the rhetoric this is a scratch for both sides.Brive1987 wrote: ↑Meh, he was never going to win. Dubious. He's talking about developing theories of phenomena that only exist in his speculative model. Sounds like Scientology with more maths. It is difficult to see the need for conscious agents to piss around manifesting microbes and then slowly manifesting ever more sophisticated meatpuppets. Don't see the nee to take it seriously at this point.MarcusAu wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2019 11:42 pmHas anyone given much consideration to the case against reality?

It seems to be rehabilitating dualism. At around 30 minutes in Hoffman states that he does not believe that consciousness could develop from non-conscious elements. So it seems there is real hope for those looking to reintegrate science and spiritualism (or perhaps even religion).

Six hundred? Sounds like they are over charging.

Sacha Baron Cohen, the original and most offensive troll in history wants to make sure social media gets rid of trolls. The ADL is lost. It is turning itself into a joke.... like the SPLC. A bunch of leftisit saying things for other leftisits.

Mike Bloomberg, latest entrant to the Dem primary, he of the giant soda drink ban, thinks the US needs “an awful lot more immigrants":

Because illiterate peasants who beat their wives and their animals, bulk up on carbs, and perform nails-through-the-palms reenactments of the Easter Passion, are just the ones to improve all that.“We need immigrants to take all the different kinds of jobs that the country needs — improve our culture, our cuisine, our religion, our dialogue and certainly improve our economy....”
