Yeah, and Marcotte certainly looks as though someone's tampering with her rusty tradesman's entrance...

Thought about that possibility about 30 seconds after tapping "enter", but then I'm on pain killers.

Are we allowed to comment on physiognomy (for the image above)? This purely from biological and anthropological perspectives...or does one still to provide with a pic and a/s/l as per Steerfuck and MKJ requirements?

PZ's new piece "I am so over the skeptical movement" (good, see your own way out, PZ!):
The one thing I’m happy to do is publicize these dumbass arguments. Why is it that people who attach themselves to a movement that prides itself on having rationality as its raison d’etre are so godawful pathetic at making a case for themselves?
Good question PZ.

I may be mistaken, but isn't this the first time she's even really talked about it since TAM?

Yes, because as everyone knows, if you're white and male you don't really have to have a valid argument. Everyone just accepts your word as gospel. Isn't that right William Lane Craig?

By the way, that picture is revolting. When you look at Rebecca Watson her atrocious oral hygiene is overwhelmingly evident. The other "chicks" in the picture aren't smiling, they're grimacing at her repulsive appearance and are disgusted by her atrocious breath. MEOW BECKY!

Yes. We are all triggered by that photograph, but moving on...

PZ posts about his book: http://www.freezepage.com/1361597432WEFVOZWZCH

and then says, about his blog:
It’s true. If I did have an editor for the blog, they’d have a nervous breakdown and collapse in the first day. Either that or they’d only allow me to post one thoroughly vetted sentence a week.
He says this three fucking days after Melody Hensley - who helped him edit his fucking book - had a fucking breakdown on Twitter and had her boyfriend take her to the ER.

I declare his new name as Poe Z Myers.

Meanwhile, the song on my Youtube channel tomorrow (Sunday) may address people's speculation about the preparation for advertising that book...

In other news,

While scrolling by the last rant directed at me by walsh, I got the impression that he seemed to think that Summers lost his job at Havard, not because of the gender feminists AKA, the "PC crowd" but because of money.

The problem with the "over a billion" dollars loss is that Summers agreed to step down in 2006 after a no-confidence vote. The swap contracts that went bad happened in 2008 which was two years later.

I dunno about you folks, but in my experience, you can hardly ever go wrong if you follow the money. So despite welsh appearing to be wrong, rather than dismiss it as just another one of his caffeine fuelled rants I decided to look into it.

Trigger Warning! Linkfest ahead! Rambles incoming! You have been warned! Take shelter naow!

(OK I decided to show some mercy and try and cut down on the linkage but consider yourself forewarned, and thus forearmed, and if you proceed any further you only have yourself to blame, and dinna come crying to me or your momma after).

There are quite a few hits about Summers and money, but according to mathbabe:
http://mathbabe.org/2012/03/11/why-larr ... f-harvard/
An anonymous person got a bunch of copies of the II article and stuck one in every Harvard faculty’s mailbox the morning of the no-confidence vote that got Summers ousted.
(mathbabe does not cite her source, and I have no way of knowing how true it is or not, but I would be surprised if what the article documents was completely unknown to the attendees of the no-confidence).

This is the article from Institutional Investor. Dated Feb 27, 2006, titled How Harvard Lost Russia (long assed article, come back to it later)
http://www.institutionalinvestor.com/Ar ... ingle=true
It concerns Summers and his friend
economics professor Andrei Shleifer, who in the mid-1990s led a Harvard advisory program in Russia that collapsed in disgrace. In August, after years of litigation, Harvard, Shleifer and others agreed to pay at least $31 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the U.S. government. Harvard had been charged with breach of contract, Shleifer and an associate, Jonathan Hay, with conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government
In any event, there was trouble elsewhere, going back as far as 2002 according to TPMuckraker, in this entry dated Apr 1, 2009 (note after the events of 2008)

Harvard Derivatives Whiz Fired For Emailing Larry Summers About “Frightening” Trades?
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.c ... actice.php
The episode dates back to 2002, when analyst Iris Mack, whose website identifies her as the second African American woman to earn a Harvard PhD. in applied math (and someone who likes primary colors) joined the much-venerated Harvard Management Company, which invests the university’s then $18 billion endowment, to find what she termed a “frightening” state of affairs.
But Wait! There is more!

Felix Salmon opined Nov 29, 2009 here:

How Larry Summers lost Harvard $1.8 billion
http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmon/2 ... 8-billion/
Summers, amazingly, wanted to invest 100% of the university’s cash in the endowment, and had to be talked down to investing a mere 80%. No wonder Meyer and El-Erian tried to talk him out of it: the Harvard endowment was never designed as a place to invest sums of cash which might be needed immediately. Instead, it’s designed to invest for the very long term, taking advantage of the higher returns on illiquid investments.

Summers was playing a high-risk carry-trade game with Harvard’s cash
I AndrewV69, the merciful, the compassionate will confine myself to just those two examples above, of the rather interesting attitude that Summers appears to have had, about managing sums of money, that strictly speaking did not belong to him. You are invited to GoogleFu yourself if you desire more.

We are nearly done here! I have only two more links ahead. But you can skip them and go directly to the end.

(any resemblance to a certain blogger who quotes extensively from another source and then throws in a couple comments, may or may not be a coincidence)

The standard narrative is of course that the Feminists did poor old Summers in. Back in 2005 the Feb edition of The Atlantic was already setting the stage (remember this was before the events of 2006). Despite some almost nonexistant nods to "balance" they pretty much came down on the side of Summers.

Anyway, if you are familiar with the standard view about the Gender Feminists you can skip the article and just read the quote (the skeptical among you will read the article anyway, and then curse yourself for not taking me at my word). If anything though I would suggest the subsequent Slate article may be a more worthwhile use of your time, even though the Atlantic piece repeatedly slags Nancy Hopkins who almost "blacked out" on hearing Summers speak.

Why Feminist Careerists Neutered Larry Summers
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc ... rs/303795/
It is ironic that while shouting down any hint that men might be more capable than women in mathematics, many so-called "difference feminists" have long contended that women are morally superior to and more caring than men. This, says Daphne Patai, a former professor of women's studies at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), illustrates "the opportunism, inconsistency, and double standards that abound in contemporary feminism, often feebly justified by attacks on logic and reason as 'masculinist.'"

Boston civil-liberties lawyer Harvey A. Silverglate placed this episode in its larger context in a piece in the Boston Phoenix:

"The modern university is the culmination of a 20-year trend of irrationalism marked by an increasingly totalitarian approach to highly politicized issues. Students are subjected to mandatory gender-and racial-sensitivity training akin to thought reform.... Faculty members and administrators are made to understand that their careers are at risk if they deviate from the accepted viewpoint."
Now the Slate article was a bit more "balanced" and "nuanced" in my view and even went so far as to slap Summers around somewhat, but still managed to preserve the narrative. This was again back in 2005. At this point however, I am going to contradict myself and suggest you just read the quote. But hay! It is your time. Do with it as you will.

The Girls of Summers What Harvard's president and his critics got wrong.
http://www.slate.com/articles/health_an ... ingle.html
In short, Summers got a bum rap. So, was his analysis of biological and cultural factors sound? The transcript answers that question, too. The answer is no. Summers grossly overreached the evidence, and he made a couple of glaring logical blunders.
So we come to the end. Was it the money, and/or the Feminists or some combination of both? You decide. I am going to go with the money as the factor that had the largest influence.

YMMV

For my next act, I may just defend "parallell logic".

Check her Twitter feed around the 17th and after. More than 3 days, but that's the gist. It was brought up on the pit and 'capped but I'm too drunk to find it.

Take a look at this post from ~5 days ago (& the multiple nested quotes there including a MH tweet and several pitter comments; also see some of the posts upstream & downstream from it): http://www.slymepit.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... 317#p65317

(Also mentioned in comment #3 at your excellent blog post on MH.)

Steers, I owe you an apology. You are obviously not the most tedious, verbose poster on the 'pit.

That has to qualify as a classic left-handed compliment – thanks, I think.

Though to be fair to Andrew, his posts, I think, have a fair amount of meat to them, just that they frequently require more time and effort to parse than I, at least, frequently have time for ….
Meh, I just like to give you a good ribbing and/or take the piss more than anything... although you do have an unhealthy fascination with "methinks" and use it way too fucking much.
I guess I’ll have to embark on a 12 step program to curtail my use of the word – methinks ….

If you did that, I wouldn't have as much of a reason to talk shit about you....This would make me a sad ratkin (see Pitglyphs).

Norah Vincent did try living like a man for 18 months. She is not straight though, so she did wind up going out on dates with women while posing as a man.

She continued her emotional descent, and a week later, checked in to a hospital with severe depression. Identity, she concluded, was not something to play around with.

"When you mess around with that, you really mess around with something that you need that helps you to function. And I found out that gender lives in your brain and is something much more than costume. And I really learned that the hard way," she said.

rayshul, commenting on ZJ's suggestion that people try opposite-sex hormones, wrote:Theoretically I'd be interested in that - I'm pretty sure my gender's not important to me in the slightest, but I doubt I'd want to be a man because a) I'm 100% certain that women get a better deal out of life in virtually every way and b) I'd be a *short* man, and I just don't think I could accept that. (I'm also a leetle worried because I'm fairly aggressive and swear a lot, and I realise my gender probably lets me get away with a fuck load of behaviour that would not be considered "socially appropriate" from a man.) Of course currently pregnant with twins so it's not like I could do any hormone shit. But I'd be interested in an experiment if one was ever done that involved that sort of thing.
!!! :) :D

If you'd mentioned it earlier, I missed the announcement.

Congratulations! When are you due, and how are you doing?

And, of course, you are currently doing some serious "hormone shit" - only it's not at all the approach ZJ' was suggesting

The only well known atheist feminists around the table are those previously mentioned, McCreight, Watson, Marcotte and Greta Christina.
I thought I recognized Pamela Gay at the back but it's not her.
Funnily enough, looking for a picture of her to compare I found the following picture of Skepchick supporter Phil (Don't be a Dick) Plait.

Sex positive?

Misogynistic creep?

You know, that's the thing. The answer, like in the case of PZ's creepy "we'll do the sex thing later" performance at Skepticon 2010, can be either - and which one it is depends on whether you are on their side or not.
If this was a picture of Michael Shermer it would immediately become Exhibit A.

Same here. I notice Lsuoma hasn't registered the complaints of the intelligence-impaired posters (me).

And of course, there's the picture. What a cruel landlord we have!

Check her Twitter feed around the 17th and after. More than 3 days, but that's the gist. It was brought up on the pit and 'capped but I'm too drunk to find it.
It is without question¹ that Hensley is a champion word-wrangler, and official opinion-curator-in-chief of CFI², therefore her input, (even if minimal), could only have improved PZ's thumbnail scratchings.
His pro-forma manuscript must have been truly dire before her learned input.
No wonder it drove his editor to the brink of insanity.
Can one imagine if Melody had not tempered his raging febrile bile that he uses as ink?

AAAP DATELINE Minniemousestoga:
Respected Publisher commits Seppuku with blunt company letter-opener.
The letter opener was a gift to Maverick Sprayer II, to his publishing firm, from J Edgar Hoover, the father of James Dyson.
The publisher's wife said that a particular manuscript drove him to despair, and gave him nightmares for 6 years running.
The noted child psychologist from Harvard University, Phil McCaverty, who is used to dealing with loonies, said that:
It is rare that we see cases like this, other than with the classic case that everyone remembers of the criminal "Mandongo" novel, by Greg Laden, which made not only the publishers, but also the readers consider suicide as an option.
The court of trial by internet is due to consider the case next Tuesday, at 10am, convening in the Twitter Room.

Ta (and Skep Tickle too). Yes, saw all that. Didn't register she actually went to ER. Just seemed so normal - they're all painkiller and therapist addicted. Had a millisecond of concern with last blog piece that it might tip her over the edge - but only a millisecond. Face it, it's her conscience that's really eating her - not anything I or anyone else may say. Self-inflicted as far as I am concerned. Fuck her. She's even made Becky look just a shade less repugnant.

Ta. This place has become an overwhelming time-eater. Either read all or read nothing. Massive attack of gretachristinitis for the last month. Decided to squeeze out a couple of articles with time windows instead.

I said "you", not "your". But I can see where it would be confusing to some.
