Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
At first I thought he was FTB, but when he referred to his earlier post I got the context. I'm not going to push too hard because there's not much to push against, but his position on 'harassment' is truly absurd, IMO. At this point, I'm just trying to demonstrate to onlookers that, yes indeed, this is the standard of 'harassment' some at FTB are using as well. Hence the 'being bothered' distinction, which I think has a lot of potential to it.Steersman wrote:I think you might be misjudging him - he seems to be at most sort of on the fence, hardly a dyed-in-the-wool FfTB-dogmatist. Seems that criticism of various public policies and statements, and individuals where they are related doesn’t qualify but that personal attacks and ad hominems do. Although that is somewhat of an impression from previous readings on the topic so I'm not quite sure where the dividing line is, but that seemed to be a salient one.Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour intended to disturb or upset, and it is characteristically repetitive. In the legal sense, it is intentional behaviour which is found threatening or disturbing.
Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
She's probably referring to the argument on Phawrongula that she had used a sockpuppet to threaten herself with rape on one of Thunderfoot's posts. If I'm not mistaken that was corrected - but as she never lurks about here and as no one that does so seems to have advised her of that she'll continue on her merry deluded way. Scattering further lies about the Pit in her train.ConcentratedH2O, OM wrote:I'm confused. Sally Strange posts at Meyers's blog, so she is obviously a virtuous person. Which makes me confused when I read the below from Sally, where she claims that she is currently being attacked on the Pit. Because, if she wasn't a confirmed Good Person, I would be tempted to call her a shit-infested fucking cunt.

But PZ's post links to a generally good argument from Marcotte. But where she and PZ fall down is where she asserts:
Unfortunately for them, FTB/Skepchick/AtheismPlus are not at all like magazines and, similarly, newspapers as they at least will publish retractions if erroneous claims are made. FTB is little more than a yellow journal and in more ways than one.Facebook, blog comment sections, online forums, etc. are just like TV shows, radio shows, and magazines.
But I find it rather amusing that Sally Strange seems to go out of her way to emphasize that she’s “never frequented the Slymepitâ€, apparently expressing some degree of panic in doing so. Guess that “example†that PZ made of Julian for lurking about here has had its “benefits†for keeping the trained seals in line ….

Speaking of Kassiane, a few weeks ago she posted on a "3 wishes" thread at A+ that, given the choice, she would not wish for a cure for epilepsy - she would wish to be able to assault and batter w/o legal consequences people who use flash-cameras or strobing bike-lights in public.
Her latest in the "throw your tantrum" thread is that she is training a kitten to be a service animal and not hiss at dogs ("with some success") and is apparently taking it for walks and fuck all those assholes who haven't trained their dogs to be nonreactive to her cat.

That's guaranteed. When he did his first blog post attacking the Slympit some of us pointed out he had made a big mistake. Not for getting things so horribly wrong as such but because now he will be allocated a 'side'. He gave himself no choice as for them there is no third way. Initially his 'side' was with them. Now he is an apostate and we know how they must be treated.jjbinx007 wrote:Excellent. I guess it shows how they up the ante. Either during or soon after the AI conference it will be open season on him and as they love guilt by association, the whole of AI. His only way out is the hope that as they are so UScentric and parochial they will write off Eire as irrelevant and ignore him.
The sooner people like Nugent realise they should treat these extremists the same as all extremists all over the world the easier it will be for him to grasp how to deal with them. He may well have grasped that some time ago but for them that is too late. They never forgive and they never forget.

So dishonest. And one of the sycophants hopes that Ophelia will "free Irish women from the Vatican." Because the efforts of Irish atheists and secularists are meaningless and ineffectual, and it will take a strong, genuine activist imported from the US to get the job done. Just like the WiSC2 conference, which knocked down the forces of religion worldwide. Except that they've done nothing for women's reproductive rights, which are constantly under assault from religionists, here in the US. Copy-pasting an outraged blog post and holding up signs while attending a privileged conference don't count.Jack wrote:All so predictable. Set up a false narrative. I am unaware of any special skills that a cat would be trained for. But there are a fair number of people who put "service dog" coats on what are called comfort animals. To the best of my research capability, "comfort" animals do not qualify for the same exemptions that permit a seeing eye dog, helper monkey or an epilepsy detector dog into all venues. But some people abuse the service dog cloak just so that they can bring their animal everywhere. Service dogs are specially skilled and trained. "Comfort dogs," shit all over the place.Cunt of Personality wrote:A cat as service animal? Really?

Good shoes and support inserts (I like New Balance) help with plantar fasciitis, and here's an inexpensive short-term treatment:ERV wrote:I look GOOD bald!
Skep tickle-- Wrapping it at <90 degrees with an ACE when Im at home, and massaging it with one of Arnies KONG toys on the floor works great!... but then it starts feeling better and Im like 'ITS PRETTY IM GONNA TAKE ARNIE FOR A RUN!!!' or 'IM GONNA KILL ALL THE THINGS AT KUNG FU TONIGHT!' and then Im back at square one. I am an idiot.
And then, frequently at work I am walking all over (lab is in one building, BSL3 is in another), I walk to/from work twice a day, I *have* to at least get Arnie walkies-- I cant stay off my feet enough to really rest it. Ugh.
1. Fill an empty 1-liter plastic Mountain Dew/evil Pepsi/Diet Coke bottle with water and put it in the freezer.
2. Roll the soles of your feet over the frozen bottle to relieve plantar fasciitis pain as needed.

And on the subject of Jenny McBoobHorse,
So now she's complaining that she's not getting enough credit as the (h/t ERV) mother of her freak-baby, Atheism Plus. (Reminds me of those Intervention mothers who are too strung out to change a diaper and then throw a hissy-fit when the kid starts calling someone else Mom.)
I'm having trouble keeping her stories straight -- seems to me she flounced from the movement, complaining that her fellow atheists are assholes and A+ type feminists were obnoxious Portlandia caricatures of themselves.
Then, a few months later, she's wailing at Lindsay that she was chased from the movement by misogynist harassers, forced offline, and prevented from even doing volunteer work:
During which time she has been continously active on twitter, including publicizing her quixotic attempt to get a gig writing a blog for Wired, and she still leaves an occasional turd at Blaghag (including one of her most recent, The Conundrum, in which she hagsplains that her problem is she can't blog because of dumb nonreasons -- none of which has anything to do with being bullied/harassed.
It would be easier if Jenny McNarcissist would just pick a hapless victim narrative and stick to it. She has the intellectual/emotional lability of a cartoon character.

Also, I see that he met long-time rival for nutbag-in-chief, David Icke for the first time yesterday at the Bilderberg protest. A close shave for the people of Watford I think - up to now they've been kept apart at all costs in case they self-annihilate in a blast of gamma rays.

I mean besides a Z-list blogger that until this post came up, I'd never heard of in my life despite being out-and-about (with breaks) in the atheist community since the halcyon days of FIDONET and USENET feeds in the late 1980s. And has anyone here ever said anything about her? Ever?ConcentratedH2O, OM wrote:I'm confused. Sally Strange posts at Meyers's blog, so she is obviously a virtuous person. I post here, so I'm a nasty, mendacious cunt.
Which makes me confused when I read the below from Sally, where she claims that she is currently being attacked on the Pit. Because, if she wasn't a confirmed Good Person, I would be tempted to call her a shit-infested fucking cunt.
Weird.

I love how he's refined his media skills over the years and instinctively knows how to tailor the message to the audience.
I was slightly disappointed though - he forgot to mention chem-trails.
Also, I see that he met long-time rival for nutbag-in-chief, David Icke for the first time yesterday at the Bilderberg protest. A close shave for the people of Watford I think - up to now they've been kept apart at all costs in case they self-annihilate in a blast of gamma rays.

PZ Myers defines harassment
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ ... -a-lesson/
http://i.imgur.com/54S6Qp4.png
Nerd of Redhead then completely mangles PZ's definition:
- PZ says that if he is "bombarded with insults" on any non-FTB site then that can NOT be considered harassment.
- Nerd of Redhead then contradicts that. PZ says "bomarded" is not harassment, Nerd says that any continuation past the incident date on non-FTB sites IS harassment. But basically, their positions are clear: harassment is "anything that FTB wants it to be, and any definitions can be changed at any time".
http://i.imgur.com/LrbgcNG.png
Also, Nerd equates a disgreement to him as "MRA fuckwit" and "Pro-harassing women". Nice language.
Many insults from FTB follow, "fuckface", "fuck you", "fuck off", "piece of shit" etc (i.e. business as usual for the civil folks at FTB).
PZ quickly fumbles to twist his own words and re-re-mansplain what he meant and the minions call for the dissenter to be banned. PZ bans the dissenter to howls of joy from the echo chamber. PZ pontificates on the threatening/harassing terrors of hashtag usage(!), pornography, and threats to slip things into his pockets (money? Was Franc Hoggle attempting to make private donations to the Church of A+theism again??). PZ talks of "bizarre attack blogs". It's true, blogs can be odd, I know of one where the author froths and rambles about her ego and twisted reality projections and her endless hate-mongering.

Over at Shakesville Liss McSpewin wrote a post to praise Population Action International for their "Dollars and Sense - the Case for Contraception" campaign to increase global availability of contraception for women. PAI points out that a fraction of what Americans spend on frivolous things could buy contraception for 222 million women:

And "junk food" is commonly associated with fat people—and increasingly associated with fat people, as the "war on obesity" is waged via public initiatives like Mayor Bloomberg's soda ban.
The intent of this graphic may not have been to suggest that spending $1 billion on candy, or Superbowl snacks, or potato chips, is profligate and self-indulgent spending, but it certainly reads that way to me.
I think there's a problem with focusing on what average people spend on anything, when US government spending on war and weapons, often in countries with low birth control access, is a more pertinent issue. But that problem is exacerbated when the specific implication is that people are spending money on a type of gluttony associated with fat people.
In a country where fat people are (wrongly) being blamed by their First Lady for higher healthcare costs and lower productivity, where we are blamed for the rising cost of airfare, for higher insurance premiums, for all sorts of financial burdens on "taxpayers" (as if we are not taxpayers ourselves)—and, further, in a country where we are often denied access to healthcare on the basis of being fat—it is not okay to even obliquely suggest that if only fatties weren't eating so many potato chips, woman would have better access to contraception.
I am quite certain that was not your intended message, but this graphic doesn't exist in a void. It exists in a culture of pervasive and harmful blaming of fat people for wrongful spending, in a culture rife with narratives that it is only fat people who eat "junk food," and that consuming "junk food" is immoral.
I beg you to reconsider using these sorts of examples in future.

I wouldn't dream of being so oppressive as to get her some clothes or try to prevent her from walking off a cliff. If she wants to stumble naked over the edge of a cliff then I'll just check my privilege, shut up, and listen (for the dull thump at the bottom).A+ Super Genius wrote:I should be able to wander down the street naked and under the influence and the first response of the person to find me is to get me some clothes and figure out how to make sure I don't walk off a cliff, because no one would think that raping me in that condition or any other was OKAY. Re: Jim the Pleb Made Me Do It
It's because HE IS NOT A SCIENTIST and UMM does not have developmental biology program. They do get grants in other biology areas, but Myers does nothing in science. He just teaches some undergrad courses in basic developmental biology in a cow-town university that is, frankly, one step up from a community college.H. Korban wrote:
I think Benson is going berserk with the "I am under attack" bit as she is a (I use this term with great hesitation) professional blogger and has nothing else to do all day long, except scrub for mentions of her name. A classic malignant narcissist.
Talking about aspiring scientists: in my university tenure is not the end of ones worries. If one wants to have graduate students and post-docs work for one, then one must write proposals (many, many of them) to keep the money flowing. Things are highly competitive and I often loose sleep when I come to the end of a grant, specially if I have students or others funded off them. I do not understand how PZ manages to keep himself going, specially in the summer. Perhaps he cleans a lot of fish tanks. I have written on an average two or three proposals each year in the last six years since graduating from school. If I were to jet-set around the world giving ridiculous talks at atheist conferences and writing absolutely worthless junk on a blog, my university would kick me out ASAP.
On a totally unrelated topic: does anyone here watch tennis? I have been watching the French Open and enjoyed the women's games this week. The men's games are much faster and involve more power play, but the women's games (and the women) are also fun to watch.
There's nothing wrong with that, not everyone gets to go to (or teach at, or conduct research at) a Top-100 (world-wide) university. But it's hardly an elite institution.
In fact years ago he used to put his UMM faculty position listings on his old Science Blogs blog... One day I mentioned, to my wife, that it might kind of neat to get out research and go into the much easier position of teaching and there was a job at UMM with one of her old graduate school mates being a professor there...
Before I mentioned I thought Myers might be able to give her a leg up, she about ripped my head off and let me know in no uncertain terms what a third-rate piece of crap UMM was... Since then I have just kept all job-seeking/grant-writing advice to myself...

She's actually quite articulate, but Koolade runs in her veins and she's got the blinkered zeal of the converted SJW warrior. She's fond of accusing people who define "racism" and "sexism" in the normal way of being "social science denialists" and telling them to #geteducated. Like Stephanie Zvan, she frequently enthusiastically retweets intellectually bankrupt drivel from people like the Feminist "my intersections have intersections" Griote:

IIRC the "rape threat incident" took place on a thread on TF's blog shortly after he left FTB last year. An anonymous poster made it and she responded to it with a paragraph of text within two minutes (timestamp 1 min after the post she was responding to IIRC). The timing and the length of her post made it suspicious.Apples wrote:--snipped--
